Firstly , I can see that no one has reviewed the Lodge for about 2 & a half years , probably because of Covid restrictions. People in the past seem to have wildly differing views on their experience here. Our group only stayed for 24 hrs & we were the only visitors but seeing as there was only 1 man on site we thought he had done an amazing job keeping the place in the condition we found it. Our cabins were clean & the grounds well maintained. Like many Lodges along the Madre De Dios river there is a bit of a climb up to the actual Lodge area. Cabins are well spaced out around the gardens with balconies to the front hung with a hammock. Rather strange washroom facilities. The cabins are semi detached so you have to go out the rear of your own one & along a covered walkway to reach your shower & toilet. It runs parallel to your neighbor so this may not suit some people of a modest nature - not a problem for me. Electricity is only available between 6 p m & 9 p m so otherwise it is down to candles. Any charging of batteries needs to be carried out in the communal hut where you dine. We came as a self contained group as most lodges had no in house cook or restaurant at the time of our trip. Plenty of birds to be seen in & around the gardens & from down by the boat landing area. In the early morning we took a short trip back up the river to a clay lick on the side of the Manu Road. Our guides & crew had spent an exhausting afternoon clearing the overgrown trail from the river up to the road which is a stiff climb through forest & glutinous mud. The weather was not great , low cloud & drizzle at first but some White Eyed Parakeets & Mealy Parrots did come on the lick but not for long. Hats off to the man at the lodge who came with us & helped out , too.

I just went on the most amazing 5 day tour with Pantiacolla. It was the trip of a lifetime, it was excellent. Saulo our guide was amazing - incredibly knowledgeable, kind, helpful, patient and generous. He is an expert in his field. The cooks Cesar and Orlando were wonderful, we ate so well. The drivers and boat capitans (Celso and Jose) were very skilled and kind. We felt welcomed by everyone and so well taken care. I came away from the experience with deep appreciation for the jungle and gratitude for all the staff. I'm already figuring out when I can do my next trip with them. I highly recommend them.

I’ve read the really negative reviews posted here and I have to mostly agree with it. It even seems like some of the positive reviews might have been written by the tour company . Someone here said the accommodations were “rustic”. I’ve included 2 photos One that shows the completely ripped mosquito netting on the hut we stayed in (it’s the wispy white stuff by the windows) Another that shows a hut with a tarp on the roof – because the roof leaked. That may be someone’s idea of “rustic” but its not mine. Our guide was NOT a Biologist – in fact I don’t think he had a college degree at all. He was good at spotting wildlife and he knew something about their habits. But, he only answered the questions you asked and didn’t really offer much information. AND, he had no idea about the politics, economics or people of Peru- even though he was born in Peru The food was mostly good but as the other negative review mentions there were times when we were served a sandwich with one slice of lunchmeat – that’s all Panticola tours only takes cash or bank wires (cash) for the final big payment- which is strange because they take credit cards for the deposit. This means you have no way to complain or get a refund if you’re not satisfied. That’s not standard in the tourist industry. So, travel at your own risk As for safety- people have mentioned that Pantacola provides life jackets – Yes they do – But, they also get you into situations which I consider unsafe- I’ve included some photos of the river covered in fog where you can just make out huge submerged and broken trees in the waterway- look carefully y. We cruised down the river at about 25 MPH in the conditions pictured here. If the boat hit a log – I wouldn’t want to be in the water in that river in just a life jacket. Would you? The week after we visited Manu with Panticola we went to the Ecuadorian rainforest with OAT – Overseas Adventure Travel- the price was about the same – even a little cheaper . The guides were really great. They talked about all sorts of subjects from morning til night. There wasn’t anything they didn’t know about. The accommodations were clean and nice. The travel was safe and the food was very good. I was much happier with the OAT company. I think you will be too

The Pantiacolla, Ecotourism company that runs this lodge and some 5-7 day trips is a SCAM. PAYMENT POLICY AND LIABILITY They only take cash as the final payment for the tours - that means you can't ask for a refund and you can't sue them if you get hurt on their trips. ACCOMIDATIONS Their lodges are falling down rotten floors with holes in them as big as a persons foot. the roofs leak, everywhere the mosquito netting is ripped, they use big rusty bent nails instead of door knobs and there are no lights. these facilities must have been this way for years. AGE LIMITS They tell you its an easy trip and there is no age limit. - It is very strenuous and dangerous given that they take no safety precautions at all. We had a 5 year old a 7 year old and a 70 year old on our trip. Each of them got hurt or sick. SAFETY You find yourself in thigh deep mud in pitch black darkness in the river trying to get to the bank. They cruise down the rive (full of submerged trees) at full speed in total fog. I understand its the jungle but, they make no effort to make it safe or clean. THE FOOD- several meals consisted of a piece of bread with ONE slice of cold cut meat period. THE TRAVEL In the end you spend 3 days getting there- FINALLY they take you to a little lake and you spend 90 minutes looking at the wildlife THE RESPONSE I talked to the Pantiacolla office manager - she was not interested in addressing ANY of these concerns PLEASE look for a different tour

This is an awesome sanctuary within the Manu National Park. Pantiacolla has balanced comfort with impact by using renewable construction materials alongside convieniences usually experienced in the city. Pantiacolla lodge is one of the early lodges in Manu and is therefore well established and built to simple yet long term standards. The dining and recreation area is community minded and provides games and information. The bedrooms are comfortable and create a connection with the natural environment. To be able to hear, see and experience the surrounding jungle is why we chose to enter Manu, to be part of nature for a while. We greatly appreciated the staff for thier friendly and positive attitude, always willing to help and inform. Food was great with fresh produce and local specialties aplenty. When visiting Manu ask youself if you want a 5 star accomodation experience or to connect with nature in a sustainable way, if the latter is you answer then choose Pantiacolla as a best option.
