We went to Manu National Parc in September 2015 and it was an amazing experience. We chose Manu Lodge which is located at a small lake inside the Manu National Parc. The Lodge is a little bit old but has everything you need and is located inside the jungle. The whole parc is just incredible with all its different plants and animals and untouched nature. We even saw a jaguar chilling at the side of the river and many animals more. Our trip was perfectly organized and guided by Froilán "Chito" Neyra, our very very good guide with very much knowledge about all the surroundings, the nature, the plants and the animals, he explained everything and in the meantime was very nice to hang out with, very nice guy. He also offers special trips to the jungle and other places and also in Cuzco and the area around which seem to be pretty nice. In case someones looking for a guide or some tours he can be contacted by his email adress: jaguarundijungle@hotmail.com or under his name on facebook. great trip!

I stayed here for 5 days, and by the end was very sad to leave. My family and I were the only visitors there during our stay, so enjoyed being doted on by the lovely staff (appeared to be a family themselves). The lodge is extremely isolated (8 hour boat journey down the river). If you enjoy a traditional (although basic) trip, seclusion and adventure then you'll definitely enjoy Manu Lodge.

We visited Manu National Park for 5 days and 4 nights in July 2013 with Manu nature tours. On the first day we left from Cusco, drove dirt roads for 8 hours through the Andes, visited Paucartambo on the way and finished in the evening at the Manu Cloud Forest Lodge. Altough we sometimes wandered if we were doing an episode of Worlds dangerous roads we were travelling in a new Hyundai van and driven by a good driver. And guided by Fraulan, our guide from Manu Nature tours. Very good guide, much knowledge and good person. It was a beautiful first day with excellent vistas, beautiful nature and first signs of wildlife. The Manu Cloud Forest Lodge was a nice lodge situated near the riverbank in the middle of the rain forest. Good food, nice and friendly people. Negative was the look of the lodge. Nice building but in need for a big bucket of paint. Second day we drove a couple of hours more on worse dirt roads. Then started in Atalaya our boat trip on the Madre de Dios river and later the Manu river. The boat is basically a very large, motorized canoe with comfortable bus chairs to sit on. It took us the rest of the day to arrive at the lodge and it was a beautiful trip with good weather, great scenery and wildlife. We did stop a couple times to stretch our legs. There was lots of wildlife to see along the shore, e.g. birds, monkeys, black and white cayman. We were extremely lucky to also see some of the "uncontacted" people. The boatmen told us it was quite rare that some of them tried to make contact with us. While two days of travel each way seems, at first, to take a lot of the available time, we know now that getting there and back was an important part of the trip. The part to experience wildlife and scenery the most. The Manu river lodge is the only permanent structure within Manu and situated at the banks of the former Manu river, now Oxbow lake. Beautiful positioned but because of their neglect, today the accommodations are from the outside not in best conditions and the conservation state of the trails is poor. So for that part owner could and should do a better job. Everything else however, was good. The lodge was clean and our cook Manuel and assistants prepared good lunch and diner. Very dedicated people. Wildlife was nearby for getting up and going to bed with the howler-monkeys. And never experienced more starry nights than the 2 nights at the lodge. So wildlife was great especially after seeing a jaguar. We saw a full grown jaguar on the banks of the Manu river for 15 minutes, at dusk on our fourth day. A beautiful way back remained. The experience of going as a small group into such a remote and inhospitable part of the world, was enormous. The drivers, boatmen and guide from Manu Nature Tours did a good job – whether it was providing interesting information on the things we were seeing, spotting wildlife, fixing meals, etc – or the less routine things like having to rebuild parts of the road between the Cloud Forest Lodge and Atalaya following a spectacular overnight thunderstorm. All in all we would do this trip again with same people and thus Manu nature tours.

This is definitely in Adventure Travel category. It's a two day trip to get to the Lodge from Cuzco. You drive all day on dirt roads to a very nice lodge on river in the rain forest. The next day you spend a couple hours more driving on a worse dirt roads. You arrive at a town on the Madre los Dios river. You then board what is basically a very large, motorized dug out canoe. It takes the rest of the day to arrive at the lodge. It's quite far. The boat isn't uncomfortable, but it does get tiring. We did stop a couple times to stretch our legs. There is lots to see along the shore. We were extremely lucky, we saw some of the "uncontacted" people. There were reports in the news about the problems they were experiencing at the time. Our guide told us it was quite rare that they try to make contact with "civilization". The lodge is primitive. Bathrooms are in an outbuilding. But there is running cold water for showers. They are reasonably clean given the conditions. The bedrooms are about the same, reasonably comfortable given the fact that you are dozens of miles from any "civilized" habitat. The lodge is clean, the food is good. What we were there for was the experience of being in the Amazon jungle. You get plenty of that. We went for several fairly short hikes, a hour to several hours every day. The lodge is on a oxbow lake in the river. There is lots of wild life. Birding is spectacular. Mammals are plentiful. Insects are pests and more than plentiful. If you are looking for a 4 or 5 star resort, this location isn't for you. It's a primitive, back country experience. For that, it's an awesome experience that can't be matched by any other location, at least that we found in our research. I would definitely go back.
