Wow, what a place Cragside is. We went with our dog, and he loved it! Beautiful gardens, and stunning views from there as well! People so friendly in cafe and shop, just a stunning place to visit!
Will be returning!

We visited between Christmas and New Year with family who traveled all the way from the US. Payment and parking was well organised and staff very pleasant. The grounds are lovely but the theme in the house was ridiculous with branches obscuring the rooms and history of the house so much so it really wasn’t worth the time or money. One room with the ‘theme’ would have been fine but we found out more, about what we could have seen, by reading Wikipedia afterwards. Disappointing.

We had never visited Cragside before but were interested in seeing the house and to see the first house to be lit by hydro electric power. We obviously came at the wrong time! The perception of the house at midnight on Christmas eve in our opinion was dreadful. Everywhere was so dark we could not appreciate any of the building, and found it very awkward as had to watch our feet all the time to see if there were any trip hazards - which there were. The amount of time and effort that had been wasted in placing greenery on almost every available surface stopped us seeing anything of any interest at all. Someone else (hooray!!) switched on one of the lights which caused pandemonium among the staff, but that was turned off very quickly, for that moment we could actually see something.
What we saw of the gardens and exterior area was lovely, although maybe a little challenging for some because of the amount of climbing/steps and were naturally a bit slippery because of the time of year.
The parking was good and all of the staff were excellent, but would we visit again probably not.

I came today with my daughter, we have been previously in the spring but wanted to experience it at Christmas so returned.
The house was done out beautifully however there were areas that was closed to the public this time that were open last time,
We managed to walk straight past the tallest living Christmas tree in the uk without noticing it which we realised once we got to the house and asked the gentleman on the door where it was. lol
We had a walk to the iron bridge and this time we didn’t walk down to the gorge due to the paths, they are naturally uneven and with it being wet they were a bit slippy too.
Instead we opted for a slow drive along the driving route and we stopped to look at the lakes. I’ve been surprised both times by the lack of wildlife on the visits. I’ve not seen many birds which is strange with the place being so wonderful and peaceful,
I have rheumatoid arthritis and I do struggle at Cragside it is a quite difficult place to go if you have mobility issues and you want to see it all. I’m expecting to wake up in pain tomorrow.

The theme for the Christmas decorations was a good idea, but the execution of it was poor. Using natural greenery is lovely when it’s done properly, but cutting it too soon and not refreshing it means it looks tired and uninspiring, and it begins to smell.
Rooms were far too dark, one particularly so. People with small children avoided going into it as the children were frightened. Also many of the rooms were closed.
The National Trust are quick to say they use volunteers, but they don’t charge volunteer prices. The competition is Alnwick and Bamburgh. The NT needs to up their game.

Don’t bother to go and visit Cragside (The house) at Christmas. We were disappointed and it is obvious the National Trust did not want to spend very much decorating the house or maybe they were short staffed. The few rooms we saw were very dark and the ‘woodland decor’ pathetic. There was no ‘enchanted spell’! Go to Bamburgh Castle instead or Alnwick gardens. There is more atmosphere there for Christmas.

We went to visit Craigside house expecting to see a beautiful building and learn its history. However, we soon realised that we were seeing only a limited part of the house, at a greater cost than during the previous month. We were also looking forward to seeing the house in festive splendour but the decorations / Christmas trees obstructed the view of the rooms and were a hindrance rather than an enhancement. There was no tour, no video, no information cards. It is a beautiful house with stunning gardens and the lack of information and historical context was therefore very disappointing. We plan to return once the decorations have been removed.

Drove over to see the house at christmas and the tallest xmas tree. A visit to the much shortened tour of the house and we were surprised to see a lot of the beautiful indoor greenery was rather dry and can't help but wonder how it will be in.a few weeks? Shame as the display was very well thought out! Then we walked to see the tree... but it was a bit light so we went for a cuppa. On our return we spotted the lights through the trees but not allowed the 30 yards down the path to stand by the tree as we did not buy a second ticket to the full " lantern walk" 😞 bit annoying to say the least. Photo shows how you view the tree if you don't pay for the extra ticket. Come on National trust allow people the 30 yards to see the tree....its xmas!!

National trust , so looked forward to my first visit.
Family have been before and said how interesting it was and how fascinating a history from the scientific point of view.
An extra 5.00 to see dull Xmas decorations
Yes I understand the animals had run a-mock in the Xmas house but it was gloomy, and uninspiring
The website should have explicitly said you had only access to a very limited portion of the house.
No access to the bedrooms, for instance!!!
A very dull visit, took less than 30 minutes in the house.
No history or insight to Craigside.
So sorry to leave sick a bad review
Totally waste of money
My only option is to go back and pay again’

Can we park and stay overnight in our motorhome?
Also, are our Scotland National Trust membership cards valid for free entry?
كُتب بتاريخ 30 نوفمبر 2024
You can use NTS membership for free entry. As regards your motorhome there is some info on the National Trust Cragside website as follows however it doesn't mention overnight stays:
"There are a limited number of spaces for motorhomes and campervans at the Formal Garden car park that are available on a first come first served basis. The welcome team will direct you on arrival. Please do not attempt to drive around the Carriage Drive in your motorhome or campervan. The road is single track and too narrow for safe passage. Maximum dimensions for vehicles 8’8 (264cm) high x 6’6 wide (195cm).
Unfortunately, due to narrow roads and natural infrastructure, we are unable to accommodate caravans or cars with trailers on site".

No you have to visit the NT property and pay for entry. The drive is truly fantastic and well worth it

I understand there is bus service from Newcastle to Cragside, but is it possible to cycle there from anywhere nearby that has bike rentals? or are there other places to bus to Cragside, other than from Newcastle (which looks like a long bus ride)? We can stay in any town with good bus/train service, but we would like to have a whole day at Cragside.

How much is entry for the gardens at cragside . Don't need to visit the house as have been in it before
كُتب بتاريخ 6 أكتوبر 2021
Join National Trust. It's such good value. We pay £10.00 a month for both of us. You can then go to Cragside as often as you like and other beautiful gardens and houses as often as you like and don't need to pay. Cragside gardens are vast so you do need more than one visit to see them all. It is £20.00 each per visit if you are not a National Trust member.
