‪This is a truly excellent small museum. It’s all built around a single locomotive but the story telling is so well done. We’re not train buffs but we found this very interesting. It started with a warm welcome and personal overview from the staff member on duty, through to a fascinating 17 minute video, to lots of photos and memorabilia. Not forgetting, of course, the Fell locomotive itself.‬

‪Not a train fan but this was a really interesting museum as this wasn't a typical train. Even the 17 minute movie was so well done I was entertained throughout. Excellent!! ‬

‪Small, but very informative museum. Good for anyone interested in social history, not just railway enthusiasts. The guide was welcoming and gave us information we may not have picked up otherwise.‬

‪O museu conta a historia dos motores Fell e da evolução do transporte ferroviario. Está localizado a pouca distancia da estação ferroviaria da cidade.‬

‪Very welcoming of young families. We just visited with 2.5 and4.5 year old. There is a moving train wheels, videos, history, model trains and train tables and train mats for the young to play with. Lovely volunteers happy to watch the kids whilst we wandered around if we wanted. Amazing knowledgable history. Ohh and kids moving train‬

‪A good side trip from Wellington is to the Fell Locomotive Museum which is an interesting drive along mountain roads past reservoirs named Stuart Macaskill Lakes and Kaitoke Regional Park to Featherston.

The museum contains an actual Fell locomotive that used to haul trains before the Rimutaka Tunnel was built in 1954. The Fell system included additional rails on the track to give additional adhesion for the steep hills.

For me one of the highlights of the exhibits was a picture of HM Queen Elizabeth who rode the train in her Coronation Tour of the Commonwealth. Apparently the royal party was unaware of the stop and the Duke of Edinburgh said, "When are we getting out of this dump?"

You have to admire a community that will tell this story which is just one of various local stories on display along with many models and items of interest about the locomotives and the tunnel that made them obsolete. An interesting aspect of New Zealand transport history.‬

‪I visited with my sister and her husband. With an entry fee of only $6 it is an attraction that most people could afford.
The volunteer on duty when we arrived was extremely knowledgeable about the whole Fell train experience. We were the only people their so he gave us a guided tour with an interesting account of the whole history of the building of the track and engines.
The photos, maps and information boards around the wall are very informative and written in an interesting way. Anyone who has any interest in history and/or trains should make it a priority.
I will be back in the school holidays to take my grandson. ‬

‪Found this place by chance en route between Wellington and Masterton. Welcomed by the curator, who spent quite a bit of time with us telling about the railway, the locomotives and its history. There is a 20 minute video, filmed in 1949 which shows the railway in its heyday. This is almost unique in that the railway had an incline in parts of 1:15, very steep indeed. One of the six engines survives and is on display along with a brake van and numerous artefacts and photographs. Well worth and hour or so of your time and all for $6?‬

‪Even though it was a cold and rainy day in the Wairarapa the welcome to the museum was warm and friendly, the guide who was working this day was very very knowledgable and was very passionate about the Fell Engine and the hard work it did on the Remutaka Incline. The restored engine 199 used to be on static display across the road in the park but now being cared for undercover and Is worth seeing on it's own...this is the real deal! they don't make engines like this anymore...there are also many excellent old photographs of the line and tunnels, authentic artifacts from the railway and a movie that was really worth the watch to get a real sense of how hard this little engine worked along with those who operated it up and down the line everyday. You will need a couple of hours to really appreciate the history and the work of engine drivers/brake car driver, fthe firemen shovelling the coal and controlling the water. The guide who welcomes you will give you some very interesting facts to bring the display to life. Great rainy day activity, but if it's cold rug up because the shed the display is housed in is a little cold with no heating as such. Not a deal breaker though.‬

‪My husband and I both enjoyed the Fell locomotive museum, there is a lot of history along that part of the railway line. We purchased a children's book for the grandchildren which has been read many times.‬
