Mt Lyford is a hidden gem and a super club field with lovely runs and facilities. There is a really family feel to the club house café and the food is hot and well priced and yummy. Remember your chains as the road can be challenging but is in good condition. At 120cm the field offered good coverage and we enjoyed several days great skiing

Stayed 2 nights in family room with our toddler and baby (brought a portacot). Karyn and Chris went out of their way to make our stay great even putting up a curtain so the kids could nap at lunchtime - the window looking over the mountains allowing stargazing whilst lying in bed was beautiful though! Great food, such friendly service, self catering kitchen basic but great for simple breakfast and lunch. Rooms were above laundry and drying room so bit noisy but toasty warm. Lovely spot.

I have skied Val Dls`ere France to Gulmarg in India over the last 40 years, and I really did like this little known resort. We joined 10 other cars in the car park after a snow and ice covered goat track to get there in the middle of nowhere, BUT worth every inch.
The resort is family owned and run for the last 29 years. low cost entry, good food with card payments available.
A good variance of slopes, facing directions, ie in or out of the sun.

I stayed in the dorm room and it was great because we were the only ones in there! The place is really nice with great kitchen and bathroom facilities! The restaurant was great next door and they have hot pools which is great. Although they were cold when we hoped into them :)

Hanmer Springs was closed (no snow), so we tried Mount Lyford out. Only tried the beginners slope out, which was fine. We found driving there challenging as newby's to snowchains, and the road seemed to go on and on - lovely views. Didn't seem as polished as Cardrona, though good to have a snowfield close to Christchurch, and we were thankful that we got to ski.

We were fortunate enough to ski Mt Lyford in the quiet week after most schools had returned from holiday and on the both days of skiing there were only about 100 people on the slopes. This meant that lessons were frequently available and the staff there were only too willing to help.
The instructors were very good for the 4 members of our party ranging from 5-40 who had limited or no experience and all enjoyed the lessons.
There had been good snow early in the week and so most of the runs were open and the lifts in operation and no queues at all.
The downsides were the overly officious staff member on reception duty on the first day, the, at best, average quality of the ski boots for hire and the fare on offer in the restaurant. The cost of skiing is pretty cheap compared to other places in NZ. Also be aware that the access road is a long, winding and in parts pretty steep drive.

I took my two boys skiing & we stayed at the lodge. We loved it here. The restaurant was excellent & we loved cosying up by the fire & eating at the 'Nook'. Staff were brilliant very friendly almost made you feel like part of the family.
Just watch out for the noises next door, or careful of your own noise, as logs don't insulate noise.

"Terrible" rating reflects the customer service and friendliness of staff.
I have skiied at Mt Lyford approx half dozen times over as many years. Comparisons are made to other commercial and club fields in south island (have skiied nearly all). Mt Lyford can be a good early season option due to aspect, collecting SE storm snow.
However: the snow report usually needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Furthermore. the signs everywhere around the field "prohibiting" any hiking and out of bounds access are needlessly patronising, and not seen at other SI fields.
I skiied here on three occasions 2013 winter. On the first day, (opening day), very poor processes to manage customers were apparent: we were waiting in a queue at the ticket booth for an hour before being served with a lift pass!
On the second day at 4pm we were abruptly evicted from the skifield cafe with our 1yr and 4yr children, and then harrassed by staff to leave the carpark immediately, being told that the carpark closed at 4pm and that said staff had finished working for the day. The sign at the bottom of the access road clearly states that the car-park has to be vacated by 4.30pm, not 4pm, and when we attempted to remonstrate with one of the ?managers, we were rudely disregarded.
On the third day, I was with my daughter on the learner slope, (in ski boots, not in skis) and was interrogated by one of the seemingly senior staff members whether or not I had been already skiing that day without a lift pass (I hadn't!). He demanded to inspect my skis for snow crust on the topsheets, and scoffed at my explanation of having had a coffee with friends in the carpark as the reason for the delay between my purchase of a lift pass and my materialising on the learner slope with children.
Not pleasant experiences, especially with young children, and I have not had similar experiences at any other NZ ski field. I will not be coming here again.

We are privately owned land and do not allow hiking unless we are sure conditions are safe.
We are normally considered one of the most friendly ski areas for us to ask the customer to leave would probably be due to the customer being extremely rude and aggressive.
It is not fair on management and staff who start very early often 2am in the morning to have to accept rudeness and we reserve the right to ask people to leave if we feel they are affecting the enjoyment of other customers or our staff.
We are therefore happy for this complainer and user to go annoy one of the other areas he skis at.

The view from the top is fantastic but the road is steep, narrow, winding and there are numerous blind corners.

been coming here since the 90's. Truly one of the best family fields around. Terrain may not be super challenging for some but the shirt-front can still scare the crap out of you at times. Basic kiwi facilities which has got better each season.
Some of the best things about this field
They let you ride your mountain bike up and down the approach road...Awesome
There is usually a dog or 2 at the top car park..
