So vast! This place made me fall in love with National Parks. Looking forward to many more visits. Gets very crowded at times, arrive early and check the weather and any road closures.

Such a beautiful huge park. We went in early spring. Snow was on the high peaks the 1st 2 days and was so beautiful. There are so many roads and trails to explore. The boulder covered creeks were 1 of our favorite spots to hike. Lots of wildlife. There is a lot of traffic at times so patience is critical.

Do not fall for sat nav thinking it will guide you to this place. You have to do old style map reading and drive without relying on any road signs (there were none) to get here without getting lost.

If you are in the area, stop by the park. They do not charge admission...the only National Park I know that is free.
I highly recommend using the Little River Gorge area. Less travel and spectacular scenery.
Also, use the Townsend entrance...you will avoid Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.

This is the most visited national park in America. Once inside, you know why. It is so green and beautiful! When you think of Tenneessee, THIS is what you think of. Be prepared to spend some time here. There are so many hiking trails, rivers and campgrounds to explore. Pack a lunch. You won't find a more beautiful place to stop and eat. Consider this: when I visited last summer, it was at the height of tourism, yet I NEVER saw another person! That has not bern my experience at other national parks in the summertime. As a result, I was able to drive slowly, stop as often as I wished and take my time on the teails without feeling like I was holding up others. This is a must do national park. HINT: The Blue Ridge Parkway has connections here too.

Without a doubt one of the most beautiful places you will visit. Hiking for every skill level. The visitors center is very helpful and knowledgeable. We come to hike 3 to 4 times a year and never get bored.

My family and I try to visit at least once a year! We love it so much. Riding around and looking at all the sights and getting out in nature is our favorite thing. It's just absolutely gorgeous!

We come from Florida every year to see this beautiful National Park. So many trails, there is something for all ages and abilities. We especially love the winter months when the forest turns into a winter wonderland. Everyone that loves National Parks needs to see the Smokey Mountains.

This is an amazing park with lots of hiking trails and views. Go hiking early, as parking can be challenging (though it keeps the trails from getting too congested). When we go back, we will look at what lodging options there are other than the crowded, chaotic, commercialized mess that Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are.

Hello, seeking some advice re: visiting GSMNP. Husband, I & small dog will be flying into Nashville Airport & renting car. From their our plan is to drive to NP, do some hikes, explore the area and enjoy nature. No other big plans. We have about 4 nights. Which is the best, less congested route to drive? Where would you suggest a relatively quiet place to stay which allows small dog and what is the favorite part of the park to visit? Thanks so much for you help. It is very much appreciated.

I would suggest staying in Townsend, which allows for quick access to the Cade's Cove area of the NP, which has several trails along the driving loop. Pretty sure there are pet-friendly hotels there.
I will be planning a trip home from my husband’s training graduation and we want to spend a few days in the Smoky Mountains. We have a 6 year old and 4 year old and will only have two days and two nights. Looking for recommendations on ways to see all the beauty with a four year old! Recommendations for the best way to spend out time. It will be our family’s first time together in almost five months!

Middle Prong Trail is a great family friendly walk along a stream. Follow directions to the Tremont area of Great Smokey Mountains National Park and continue on to the nice wide, flat trail a mile or so from there. I picked up some fun things for the grand kids at the gift shop in the Tremont area too.

Hi want to see Falls color. Is mid October best time to see that or towards the end of October is better? No snow too right?

We were there Nov 6-11 and the leaves were past peak. It was still lovely in many places but if you want more leaves (and more people) a couple weeks earlier would be ideal. A nice bonus is if you wait until this week you catch the Dollywood Christmas decorations too.
We are planning a family trip next year. There will be 15 adults and about that many kids. Not sure one large cabin is good for our sanity. Can anyone recommend where I can find a cluster of 4-5 cabins, close to the park?

You could try contacting the management company for some of the VRBO/AirBNBs. They would mangage multiple houses and could possibly find some close together. You are probably better off at one of the resorts, but also you should call directly instead of trying to book that online.
We just stayed at Villa Tavia. It had 5 bedrooms with King beds. 4 of those bed rooms had private baths. The 5th Bedroom shared the bathroom with down stairs living space. It is large enough for about 1/2 of your group. There are other rentals nearby.
Where are the best places to take younger children (4 and 6) definitely want to picnic.

Metcalfe Bottoms for a picnic.
Cataract Falls is a very easy hike at the Sugarland Visitor Center
Little River Trail at Elkmont. Turn off Little River Road. Just before campground entrance turn left into first parking area. Trailhead will be at the end of the parking area.

I would like to plan a trip from NW Baltimore to Gaitlinburg, TN and Ashville, NC. What's the best loop to include scenery and sites. I will be driving with my family over 7- 9 days, staying 3/ 4 days in each city. Thanks.

You might ask this the TA road trip forum. It won't let me post the link here, but just Google trip advisor road trip forum.

Can you access the waterfalls alone? Or do you have to pay for the guided tour?

We were able to find a few smaller water falls at some of the road side pull offs. Depending what you are looking for the park had a ton of different things to see and do for all ability levels.

Greetings. Heading to the Smokies on Monday 5/18 from NC. I understand that just a few roads are open so am assuming some trails, such as Charlie's Bunion, might be busy. Any recommendations for off-the-beaten-path trails, with vistas, to avoid crowds?

We always loved going Roaring Forks and there are numerous trails to choose. Maybe since Mother's Day is passed, it won't be as crowded. Good Luck!
