‪We love this hike! We’ve been hiking it for around 10 years and it’s great for dogs. There’s a good amount of steps and a few little streams you have to cross. A bit more enjoyable when it’s less crowded. Really nice in the spring and fall.‬

‪We recently visited Turkey Run Park hoping to enjoy the fall colors and a good walk along its less challenging Woods Trail, not the steep Turkey Run Loop Trail down to the Potomac River. Although we tried to find the walking trails supposedly accessible from parking lots B and C, we found only restrooms and picnic tables, but no signs and only one red blaze related to the Woods Trail. Had we not found a trail map of Turkey Run Park on the Park Service's GW Memorial Parkway website we would not have been aware that there was a Woods Trail in the park. We had a little better luck finding a trail from parking lot A which took us to the one and only trail sign that we found during our time in the park. This sign pointed to the Potomac Heritage trail which was three-tenths of a mile away. We followed an easy trail downhill and saw a lovely flowing creek with a mini-waterfall. We spoke with another visitor who told us that he has visited the park many times and agreed that the trails were difficult to find with all the leaves on the ground. Unfortunately, this national park does not have a visitor center. The park headquarters building has only administrative offices. While we can recommend this park as a picnic site, we can’t recommend it as a good place to take a walk, at least not if the trails are hidden under fallen leaves.‬

‪Located a few minutes drive south of the Legion Bridge, Turkey Run Park is part of the National Part Service and offers a path down to the Potomac river, overlapping with the Potomac Heritage Trail, and back up to the parking areas next to the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

We parked near Area B and started walking the Woods Trail in a southern direction, past the Parkway Headquarters, and down towards the river. Since it had rained recently, parts were a bit slippery. Crossing the Wisteria Run was exciting.

The views along the Potomac are stunning. Eventually, we got to the Switchbacks and the stairs taking us back up to the parking level near Area C.‬

‪A wonderful hiking area along the Potomac running parallel to the George Washington Parkway. Because it is below the Parkway along the river, the sounds of DC are minimal and you can focus on nature. Truly a hidden gem for hikers in the area‬

‪It’s no secret that Northern Virginia has some of the most beautiful landscapes on the East coast, but some might find it surprising that you can escape into that nature so close to DC. Turkey Run is just 6 or 7 miles from memorial bridge and one of the few places to escape the crowds of city life.

If you’re looking for flat, paved walking trails in a well landscaped city park, this is not the place for you. If you prefer a great workout up and down steep, often narrow trails through wild overgrown forests, than welcome to paradise.

Perhaps because Turkey Run is really only accessible by car, it’s one of the few places in the DC area where it’s not uncommon to spend an entire day without encountering another person. Whether you’re a serious hiker or just looking for the perfect spot for a private picnic, this park is well worth a visit.‬

‪Two of my passengers told me about needing to stop by a restroom as we 're driving at the George Washington Parkway so we stopped here. We've passed it for so many years, but never bothered to stop at this park.

We're surprised to see that it is not a regular park with picnic areas and some other amenities. All we saw were several areas with parking spaces. There are trails to go down the Potomac River but we're not hikers and did not have the correct shoes nor clothing.

We finally saw the restroom but it was closed. There is a sign that says that it is open in April. We quickly left the park and looked for another restroom.‬

‪This is strictly a place you go to trek through the forest. There are parking spots and then trails out into the unknown. There aren't picnic tables and grassy areas for a respite from traveling.

The park is quiet and beautiful and gives a person a chance to escape the city noise and craziness. Bring your hiking shoes, water and bug spray and have at it.‬

‪Great little park, just be careful- after some storms they haven't gone in and cleaned up, so be on the lookout for broken boards, lots of water crossings, and some downed trees. We went rucking through the Heritage Trail/Turkey Run 3.7-mile loop, and on the Heritage Trail (yellow), a tree with a blaze has fallen, and the path has been partially washed out. We had to slide into the ravine and scramble up the other side to get to the trail once more. It's on the west side of the trail near the housing development.‬

‪It was a beautiful day for a walk in the park. However, if you expect an easy and relaxing walk, where you can go side by side with your friend and chat, this place is not for you. Turkey Run Park has two major trails. One goes along the river and it is marked in green on the map. It is pretty wild, full of stones, inclines and fallen trees. Only one person at the time can go.
Another one is marked in red and more suitable for walking and talking side by side, but with fallen leaves around it was pretty easy to lose the direction anyway. Both paths together supposed to present a closed loop. However, it was not clearly marked where to turn and it was very easy to miss your turn, what we actually did, and wind up going towards Georgetown till the path was blocked by the fallen tree to the extent that we couldn't continue walking. On the map, however, it looked like a clear path down to Washington DC. Not so. If you don't want to miss your turn, look for the concrete tower with the water marks on the side opposite to the river. It is located on the East side of the loop.
Though we enjoyed the adventure, I wouldn't go there again as it is so many more beautiful parks in Washington DC area. Definitely not recommended to go there in the wet weather. Though it can be a very good spot to have a picnic as every parking lot has picnic tables next to it. ‬
