Intriguing and beautiful home with wonderful history. Our tour guide was exceptional giving a wealth of information about the history of the grounds and all those who lived and visited there (including our first five presidents). Grounds also include impressive monument to the original writer of "Taps" and the youngest Medal of Honor Winner who won his medal near here. The tour of the grounds is self guided but the house tour is guided. An important part of history.

On a complete whim, we found this tour as an alternative to another plantation home we had intended to visit (was closed). Upon arriving it was like an immediate step backwards through time! We went on a Sunday morning and were surprisingly blessed to hear a private event holding church and singing a multitude of hymnals from one of the adjacent buildings.
Our tour guide (forgive me for not remembering her name) did a fantastic job of pointing out so many of the important historical references to the property along with the unique stories behind certain property features. We were COMPLETEY unaware of the significance of the planation beforehand, and it turned out that it is quite literally "THE" first documented Thanksgiving Day in our nation! (Nope, it was NOT in Massachusetts as some believe). This place is ALSO where the infamous "Taps" was written and played!
The plantation also boasts historical significance with its ties to former Presidents and signers of the Declaration of Independence, and it did come under attack by the British forces at one time. It's simply awe inspiring when you realize that you are literally walking in the very footsteps of those involved in famous incidents from 400yrs ago!
Sadly, you are not permitted to take photographs of the inside of the mansion or of the basement museum beneath it. I don't fully understand it and only wish we could share photographs with others, but don't let that detract your decision to visit!!!

This location is definitely worth the trip IF you like a little history-REAL AMERICAN History. We found out many things while on the tour such as this being the first place TAPS was played in the military; or the FIRST place Thanksgiving was celebrated in America-Per the U.S. President. It was a very beautiful place with an excellent tour and tour guide for the House. Would recommend.

This was a surprise ending to our stay in Williamsburg, recommended to us by a volunteer at Colonial Williamsburg. This had been the home of Benjamin Harrison (signer of the Declaration of Independence), his son William Henry Harrison (9th president, first to die in office after only 32 days since inauguration), and WH's grandson Benjamin (23rd president). At this time, you see the first floor of the inside of the home, and you have privileges to walk out on the grounds. Our tour guide spoke a little too fast, but he was obviously passionate about the history. If you have seen the movie, "Harriet", you will see the slave quarters used as a set, but as our tour guide adamently shared, "they are NOT like slave quarters would have been back then, these are too nice!"

What a terrific plantation filled with so much history - signer of the Declaration, a president, Civil War stories and more. A great stop and excellent tour. Worth a stop!

This is a terrific plantation and Clarence our tour guide was a 15 our of a 10! VERY knowledgeable and so excited himself about the plantation and history. I’d take the tour again with him there was so much to learn.
The house and grounds are just beautiful. One of the best plantation tours I’ve ever taken

During a couples’ trip to Williamsburg my wife and I visited the Berkeley Plantation in Charles City, VA. This area of Virginia has many Plantations, but Berkeley is advertised as the most historic Plantation of all.
It was the location of the first official Thanksgiving in America predating the Pilgrims feast in Massachusetts. It is the birthplace and home to a signer of the Declaration of Independence and governor of Virginia. It was home of two Presidents of the United States -Williams Harrison and his grandson Benjamin Harrison. In its history 10 former presidents have visited this site including Washington and Lincoln. It was occupied by Union Solders during the Civil War. TAPs - the official song of military funerals and memorial services - was composed and first played here. It is registered as a Virginia and National Historic Landmark dating back to 1619.
Berkeley Plantation commemorates these historical events with guided tours of its mansion, films of its history shown in the Coach house and Basement Museum, monuments to the first performance of TAPs and the First Thanksgiving with audio recordings that tell of their unique stories; reconstructed slave quarters and five terraces of restored gardens and grounds that extend a ¼ mile from the mansion to the banks of the James River. There is also a gift shop and picnic area.
Tours of the mansion by customed guides are limited to the exterior and main floor starting every hour from 10 AM to 4PM. While tours of the gardens, grounds, exhibits, kitchen, films and basement museum are self-guided and at your own pace. All visitors to the Plantation are instructed to visit the gift shop to purchase tickets for the guided tours, maps and to receive guest stickers to be worn during your visit to the property. Cost of the tour is $16 for adults and $7.50 for children under the age of 12. They give discounts for seniors (60+) and military families but no longer provide discounts for AAA customers. Restrooms are in the Coach House.
To the history buff this site is an absolute gem. It’s an hour long but don’t skip the guided tour of the mansion. The guided tours are so informative and entertaining as they share details of the cultural, historical and political fact and folklore of this site; and the culture and life the famous people who lived and visited here. The site is full of colonial and Civil War artifacts in its basement museum. If you are not into history, the beauty of the mansion and its many antiques, furnishings and artwork; the gardens; the grounds; the gazebo and the scenic views of the James River will certainly make your visit worthwhile.
During our visit we found the condition of the grounds and gardens were not up to the level of a well-maintained botanical garden. For example, the 100-year-old Boxwood Garden was not as perfectly manicured or sculpted as it appears in the tour map and the Ladies Winter Garden and Rose gardens are not as full of wildflowers and rose bushes as you might expect. But the grounds are still lovely to walk through and photograph. There are many benches to sit, relax and enjoy the surroundings, especially in the patio near the gift shop.
Our visit to Berkeley Plantation was about 2 hours long. Our trip to Berkeley from Williamsburg VA was a scenic 45 min drive over a winding, country road (highway VA-5) - especially as we passed the Chickahominy River Park and drove over the Chickahominy Bridge on our way to the Plantation.
Drivers to the Plantation should also beware that the entrance to Berkeley is over a 1-mile, narrow gravel road which was designed for horse drawn carriages but must handle two-way car traffic today. I was concerned when I first saw this road if it was wide enough for two cars to safely pass. But, we were able to drive our SUV - in and out - over this bumpy narrow road at reduce speed while passing other cars going the other direction.

The tour guide provided lots of information. I didn't know the amount of history at this location. To stand in the room where the first 10 presidents sat around talking and drinking was surreal.
You are able to walk around the plantation at your ease. There are additional videos to watch/listen to as you stop at various locations on the grounds. There was recently a couple tunnels discovered on the property. I'll be returning to find out what they discover!
The cost was very reasonable - especially when compared to other attractions we visited. They do offer a senior discount starting at age 60.

Is there a restaurant for lunch on site? If not, can someone recommend a nearby lunch place for about a dozen people?

Not 100% sure but probably not. This is a well-manicured home and dogs likely are not welcome. A ticket is required to tour the grounds and tour the house and I can’t imagine a dog being allowed inside the dwelling.

For the $12, $11 for seniors admission, you get a short film of the plantation history, a docent that conducts a tour of the first floor of the house, access to a small museum in the basement and the self guided tour of the grounds and gardens.
