‪Had last visited the site over 50 years prior and from the literature it looked like the museum would be of interest to me. First off it was a little hard to find the Site. So much construction in the area and the signage left something to be desired. Seemed confusing even to Siri. Once we arrived we were greeted by a very pleasant and knowledgeable person. The introductory film in the museum was very good and the museum interesting. I an avid Texas history student and writer and was hoping for tidbits of new information but did not find such. In all fairness I will have to say that for visitors without a lot of Texas history knowledge the site is a very good introduction. The original town of San Felipe was burned to the ground by the colonists during the Revolution so all of the buildings are reproductions and probably better than the originals. It was a cold blustery dry morning and we were in a bit of a hurry so we probably did not soak up everything we could have. The three stars are simply because there wasn't a lot there but I would still recommend a visit.‬

‪This was my first return to this State Historic Site since replica buildings have been added to the property - the Austin Academy School, Texas Gazette Printshop, Courthouse and Convention Hall, Emigrant's Residence, and Farmer's Hotel. The Texas Historical Commission is to be commended for its efforts in expanding the Colonial Capital of Texas. All staff members at the museum complex were friendly, willing to share their time with us, and well-informed. Many exhibits are interactive using modern technology. Persons interested in early Texas history would enjoy visiting the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site. In addition, educators charged with teaching Texas history would find this museum complex fascinating and a good place for a class outing. First time visitors should plan for at least a three hour stay.‬

‪Attended the free event for the new permanent exhibit Villa De Austin, which is an open air museum representing some of San Felipe De Austin this weekend.

Very nicely done with volunteers in period costume and some talks and demonstrations of life back in the days of Stephen F. Austin and the town that was the capitol and headquarters for his colony in Mexican Texas from 1823 to 1836 when the town was burned ahead of the approaching Mexican army.

Observed a small archeological dig in progress on the lot of the former home of Jane Long’s sister.

Visited with a rep from Texas Archaeological Society that was very enthusiastic and passionate about the work being done.

The museum itself has free admission for the weekend as well.

This is a wonderful historical site that has been somewhat forgotten in the past, so I am so happy to see its continued expansion.

I only wish they would somehow incorporate the older site that historically contained more of the town’s buildings and is where the old Stephen F. Austin statue, that we some of us grew up visiting is still located.

It is across the road from the new museum complex and grounds and there is no connection whatsoever, despite the nice pathways that appear to lead toward it. When you reach the road, everything is blocked off and you have to go around.

There is a small parking area directly in front of the old statue. So be sure and do that vs trying to walk across like I did.

My understanding was that a bridge over the roadway was considered but not approved. Also, I believe the older “original site” has been left as it is, so as not to disturb the archeological site.

It just makes me feel it is somewhat forgotten.

The new museum is very nicely done. Some interactive exhibits, artifacts and a film.

A highlight is Stephen F. Austin’s original portable desk.

This is a great place for school children to visit and learn about Texas history. There were several hands on activities that kids were enjoying.

Thanks to all the volunteers that made the inaugural weekend special!‬

‪This museum is part of the Texas Independence Trail and worth a visit. The host was very informative when we arrived and added to the history on exhibit.

The nice part of the museum is that they presented the history of the town but also personalized what life was like in the building up and burning down of the town.

If heading down I-10 take the short detour and visit if you are interested in history.‬

‪This a must visit site for anyone interested in Texas history - and it might even spur the desire to learn more about the Republic of Texas. A very interesting place that very few know about since it is often overlooked when studying the Alamo, Goliad, Gonzales, Washington-on-the-Brazos and San Jacinto,

Good interactive museum displays about the town, Stephen F. Austin Colony and the background leading to the fight for Texas Independence. Walk the grounds to understand the importance of this 1820s - 1830s era town on the Brazos River.!‬

‪Last weekend, we camped at Stephen F. Austin State Park and went on a guided tour of the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site which is across the street from the State Park.

The guide was extremely informative and gave-us the “back-story” behind all of the exhibits – I had no idea that this area was so influential in the formation of the great State of Texas!

Highly recommended (5 stars!) so if you’re in the area is a must see exhibit!‬

‪This is close to one of my favorite hiking spots (Stephen F Austin State Park) and I've visited the old set up a few times. I finally came through with enough time to see the new museum. It is a huge upgrade. This is a really interesting tour, even my 10 year old niece paid attention the whole time. They have artifacts on display, huge wall-sized pictures that are lit up and scheduled 'classes' or talks. I went when the weather was tolerable, but in the summer this would be an especially nice place to visit to get out of the heat!‬

‪I love this museum, one for its portrayal of a unique and almost unknown part of Texas history, and two, for the engaging way the tour guide and the multi media was used. Especially loved the activity board where we could choose what we would have done and then see what they actually did. It was worth every penny and more. They have plans to improve it even more, so I'll be planning another trip there next year.‬

‪I had visited San Felipe as a very young child with my father who passed away in 1964.

So returning to the San Felipe de Austin site was nostalgic for me.

I had no idea the new museum had been built across from the site. I live in Sugar Land and decided to ride over with my adult daughter. The TA choices of type of visit doesn’t offers just plain “family,” which was the case.

I remembered the Stephen F. Austin statue from old black and white family photos & once visited Washington on the Brazos, thinking it was there.

So I found the statue! Not as big as I remember it from childhood, but impressive nonetheless.

The museum was very nice. The interactive graphics were awesome. Lots of relics found at the town site. Stephen F Austin’s desk, which apparently was designed to travel if needed. A replica/partly original of a settler’s cabin and multimedia displays that provided some background on the people and events (The Runaway Scrape) surrounding San Felipe de Austin.

A great “refresher course” for me as a Texan, who learned much of this a very long time ago.

There was a temporary display in a front room of prints of photographs of Austin’s Old 300, many of them settled in the Richmond area.

The museum was a bonus for us as we had not known what to expect. Very nicely done.

What I was really anxious to see was the actual site of the town. There was a literal disconnect as you need to go across the road to the site. We were told, I believe a pedestrian bridge is in the works. For now, you are better of going in your car and parking alongside the site vs walking.

I read a complaint on here about the site’s condition. It seemed fairly well maintained to us. What is left of it, that is. There is not much to see. Keep in mind the settlers burned down the town to keep it from falling into the hands of the approaching Mexican troops. I think the old well is the only original thing left.

There is an old store built after the town was burned that has been moved several times and a log cabin. The Stephen F Austin statue and a commemorative obelisk from the 1920’s. Some benches around the site were provided by a scout troop from Sugar Land. The pathways seemed freshly raked and easily walkable. I did see the possibility of ant mounds in springtime, but no signs of activity when we visited. Some active excavation sites in view and cordoned off and covered with tarps.

Honestly, I was grateful to see what preservation there is and hope this is a work in progress. If the quality of the new museum is any indication of what’s to come, then I feel the effort that has been made and the enthusiasm shown there bodes well for this important piece of Our Texas history.‬

‪I was there with a group of people 55+. This was one of the best historical museums I've been to, and I've been to many. Even though I've studied Texas History I learned even more here, specifically about the town of San Felipe and the Texas War of Independence from Mexico. It's a relatively new museum, and the history of this town is virtually unknown to many, even to native Texans, but deserves to be. The guide made it very interesting and interactive. The exhibits were very well done. There were some impressive audio visuals with the latest technology, including a short movie. They also said there will be more exhibits to come.‬
