‪I will focus on the hiking trails, but note that this park also has facilities for camping. The park has miles of hiking trails which can be rated as easy. The trails are well maintained. A couple of trails were closed due to downed trees, but they are clearly marked and be easily bypassed via other trails. There are plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities, and in this hike a spotted deer, squirrels, black vultures, turkey vultures, woodpeckers, hawks, and cardinals. The site has a small gift shop, nature center, and very clean bathroom facilities.‬

‪November 2020 ALERT! Due to Interstate 10 construction, the eastbound exit for San Felipe is closed so the navigation system took us further East and then backtracked on some horrible condition rural roads. Recommend going to Brookshire and using FM 359 and then FM 1458 to reach Park Road unless you want to really beat up your rig. West bound entrance onto Interstate 10 was a bit crazy also so you may want to do some recon before finding yourself down a horrible back road. No notice of this on the State Park website.

40 FHU sites here under Spanish moss-draped trees. Good spacing between most sites, but no privacy from neighbor sites. The site required leveling side-to-side.
Quiet campsite. No highway noise. Train whistle in distant. Saw lots of deer that came fairly close to us.
Nice trails but very busy on weekends as Houstonians escape the city for some country fun!

A brand new toilet/shower facility opened in early November 2020 in this FHU campground that includes 2 family restrooms. Toilet stalls are very narrow with residential toilets which are water saving that required 4-5 flushes to empty the bowl. Dyson hand dryer.

In the FHU loop, there were 3 camp hosts and one campsite marked for the 4th camp host. Another site has a firewood wagon and an ice machine. Then another site is coned off. So 6 sites gone from the inventory! There is a camp host site also in the tent loop. Wow - 5 camp hosts?? That has to be a record for this size park! We did see Park Police drive thru the FHU loop very frequently.

A new toilet/shower facility is under construction in the tent loop. Construction just began so probably another 6-9 months to finish. In the meantime, there are 4 job johnnies and campers from the tent loop utilizing the new toilet/shower facility, with 3 toilets for women and 2 for men.‬

‪Beautiful park. Stayed 2 nights in October. Nice, level, pull-thru sites for big rigs. Spacious camping sites with grass. Lots of hiking trails. The weather was beautiful. Quiet area. The park was working on a large restroom/shower facility near the pull-thru loop, which hopefully will be done soon for other campers. The only downside were the mosquitoes and bugs, but that is what repellant is for. We travel in a motorhome with a tow vehicle. We would recommend this park and we would stay here again.‬

‪This is a great location to explore early Republic of Texas history along the Brazos River. It is central for a long weekend camping trip or day adventure from Houston, San Antonio or Central Texas.‬

‪Last weekend we camped in campsite #81 – it was the largest campsite that I’ve seen at any State Park – it had 2 picnic tables & 1 fire ring and could easily be used for large groups, (though the official limit is 8 people per campsite). We were able to pitch our tent far away from the road and around a bend, so it offered a great deal of privacy. The parking lot is adjacent to the site, so being a “walk-in primitive” site was not an issue and the restroom is across the street, so water and restroom facilities were close by!

On Saturday morning, we went to Howell’s Riverfront in Columbus, who shuttled our car which allowed us to kayak the Colorado River, (class 1 rapids, aka easy) – great fun! As we were returning to the State Park, stopped by to visit the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any Prairie Chickens…but was told the best time to go is in the early morning, so perhaps we just missed them. Then in the afternoon went on a guided tour at San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site, which is across the street from the State Park. The guide was extremely informative and gave-us the “back-story” behind all of the exhibits – I had no idea that this area was so influential in the formation of the great State of Texas!

The following morning, we went hiking on the Barred Owl Trail, which is an easy, short 0.65 mile hike but offered several overlooks of the Brazos River. We saw several deer, so have your camera ready!

The only problem that we ran into were the mosquitos, though the guide at the Museum said it had rained the week before, so be sure to bring your bug repellent and/or wear long sleeved shirts and pants.

The campsite and restroom were very clean and we hope to return someday in order to explore the rest of the State Park!‬

‪Nice park with good trails and a good day use picnic area. My wife and I had a good trail run followed by a picnic and spent the day chilling in the sun. Nice and peaceful, would visit again.‬

‪My reservations were made nearly 6 months ago, as we visit Texas State Parks annually in our escape from Michigan's winter grip.
Rarely disappointed over the past 9 years of TX travel, Stephen F. Austin State Park ranked a stretched 'Average'.

Not only is the 40 site 'modern' campground without a bath house, one must journey over to the 2-stall 'primitave' C.G. to take care of business.
Effort has been made to accomodate the campers in the main loop. (See images)
Construction continues, however there are NO exterior walls up yet...or, even any concrete poured.
Campers risk being awakened by the 7-8 am workforce arrival and equipment arrival, and then the day long a activity.

Sorry SFASP...I shall move on ahead of schedule.‬

‪I went to explore the park on foot on a grey Sunday afternoon. I felt really welcome when I bought my entry ticket from the friendly ranger. The hiking trails are very easy and well maintained. I noticed a surprisingly large camping and picknick area in the middle with almost nobody using it. There is a trail through a quiet forest section away from the recreational area, and a nice viewpoint on the Brazos River. The wildlife viewing wall seemed redundant to me, but I could be wrong there. If you switch from one trail to another you can hike quiet a few miles here, but it never really feels remote or adventurous. All in all I didn’t regret going here, and although I wouldn’t recommend it to the adventurous hiker, it certainly looks like a nice place in nature for a pick-nick, outdoor fun, and a stroll through a pretty forest.‬

‪We stayed for 3 nights over the Thanksgiving weekend in our travel trailer. The pull through sites are nice and roomy. Easy in and out. Loved the trees with the moss hanging. Nice hiking ,biking trails. Park is beautiful and location is convenient off of I10 to run into town (Sealy) either to shop or eat. Even close enough to run into the big city (Katy) if you desired.‬
