‪The grand kids, their parents and us grandparents enjoyed the hands on crafting and visits with craft experts, visits to the historical homes and Shakespear shorts from several plays the UT students are working on for the summer season.‬

‪Finally made the drive out to Round Top for a UT production of a Shakespearean play at Winedale. Living in Austin I had heard about the venue and program for several years, but never committed to making the drive to this "barn" for a production. It was really excellent. Despite very hot weather, there were fans to keep us comfortable. As the venue is small, the production had an intimate feel, and as the venue is literally in the middle of the field, there was a rustic, Texas feel to the whole evening.

I saw a production of Love's Labour's Lost, a play in which I had once appeared, so I knew it well. The Winedale's rendition was a hilarious romp that would have done the Bard proud. It did not take itself too seriously, as it should not with this completely silly play full of puns, word play and bawdy humor. Bravo!‬

‪It maybe out of the way. But if you are doing Round Top music or antiques festivals. Winedale is a true Texas and history gem‬

‪This is truly a unique experience out in the pastures of Fayette County Texas. There are homes, demonstrations at certain times of the year, gardens and examples of a by gone time. The Austin UT students perform several Shaespearian plays in the barn. They help make their own props and costumes. The students come from all fields of study...you don't have to be a drama major. Previous years' students love to come back for the performances and to share with the teaching staff. The performances are top notch!‬

‪I love Winedale because it has a bit of everything.

Wonderful Texas vernacular architecture, including an original stagecoach stop with hotel, some neat 1800s German houses.

They also host great events like Shakespeare at Winedale and an old fashioned Christmas celebration.

If you want the tour, call in advance.‬

‪There's nothing like it. Whether you're new to Shakespeare, think you don't like Shakespeare, consider yourself a jaded scholar or veteran playgoer you'll likely feel a trip to Winedale is as good as it gets.‬

‪This is a great place to see Shakespeare performed mostly by amateurs. Although productions are in the summer and it can be pretty hot, it is fun and well worth the trip to this beautiful area and property. We looked at the place this weekend, but have been to plays four and five years ago.‬

‪This past Saturday (July 18, 2015) we saw two plays: Pericles and 12th Night. We loved both performances, and particularly loved the enthusiasm of the performers. The performers are students at the University of Texas, and this is an academic course during the summer where students study an dperform Shakespeare's plays. The director, Professor James Lochlin, has great credentials: MA from Oxford and PhD from Stanford, and has taught at Dartmouth and studied at Dartmouth with Peter Saccio, a Shakespeare scholar. Professor Lochlin also, as a student, partcipated in the Winedale Shakespeare class. The performance barn is in the country, a few miles from Round Top; while it is an old German hay barn, it was rebuilt to include a great stage and a balcony for the audience as well. While it is open air, there are lots of fans with cool air pumped in. There are lots of tables outside which people use to eat or drink a bottle of wine. The performers mingle with the crowd after the performance. This is a great venue and well worth the drive time to get there.‬

‪We visited on a rainy Friday with a group of friends fora group tour that was supposed to be docent led of two houses. After a pit stop at the conference center we went over to the McGregor house which showed 1860's Texas version of Greek Revival style house that was built as a dog trot. The docent's discussion of the home, its history, and furnishings was very knowledgeable and thorough. The house had been moved to the site from its original location and restored in the 1960's. I don't think much maintenance has been done since to the exterior. The white paint is peeling rather badly in some places. Most tragically are the exterior shutters which are falling apart and some missing.

We were not able to visit the interior of the Lewis house because of the mud from the week of rain. But it showed other signs of neglect where the cedar fence was down in places and the detached kitchen was collapsing in on itself.

A shame no real effort seems to be made to make the place accessible year round as the roads are mud holes without even rock or shell paving. The walking paths were also mud holes and could be paved with decomposed granite (DG). I don't expect paving or concrete drives and sidewalks, but there are too many other possibilities.

These houses are suppose to provide a picture of how families lived in the nineteenth century rural Texas which the interiors probably do; however, the neglect on the exterior of the houses is not what you would expect of people who lived there. This place is under the stewardship of the University of Texas and should be either taken care of or given to another organization that would not neglect it.‬

‪16 of us had reserved a 10:30 am tour to see. 2 houses. One we did see but Beth said we could not go upstairs! It was not barred and the stairs were typical stairs. One lady went up so we all followed. We did not see the 2nd house as a bit of an attempt was made to put down some wood chips on the small area but they would not let us tour it for the 1 hour promised. Did not get any advance notice about the change. Was supposed to be. 2 hours not 1. I believe an improvement in public relations is needed. Perhaps the millions of dollars their football coach earns can contribute to a small gravel walk to the house we could not see!!‬
