While visiting the national park, we took a day to explore this state park. Talk about remote! We never saw a ranger, an entry gate, and barely another person. We think we encountered 3 people which was fine by us.
We took the scenic drive into the park and we can attest that it was amazing. Our goal was to find Closed Canyon. Since we had no map for the park, we thing we drove about 25 miles inside the park to get there (at least 20 miles). We ended up stopping at a trail and that was helpful because it had a map there so we could tell Closed Canyon was the next hike from that trailhead.
Closed Canyon, while the only hike we did in the park, has to be one of the best ones in this park. We love walking through slot canyons. There were places you had to scoot down rocks and the canyon truly is closed when you reach a point where you must turn around. We looked beyond there and could see huge boulders just lying there so no way would it be safe to go beyond that point. We loved this hike and the state park is quite gorgeous!

We drove through Big Bend Ranch State Park on paved Hwy 170 all the way from Terlingua to Presidio. This is a drive with incredible scenery. We ate our lunch at a delightful picnic stop with tipis. There were several trailheads along the highway. We only did hiking at one of them---the Hoodoos Trail. Unfortunately, we were pressed for time so we didn't do any other hikes. We had seen how beautiful the scenery was along this highway the day before when we rode through a lot of it on a shuttle van for a canoe trip we went on that went down the Rio Grande River through Big Bend Ranch State Park. I wish we had had a 4 x 4 vehicle so that we could have gone down some of the back roads. However, you can still see plenty of beauty by driving the paved road and hiking the trails that are directly accessible from the highway.

This is one of my favorite places to visit anywhere in Texas. It is rugged/remote with no cell phone service and usually very few people which makes it a great place to unplug and recharge your soul. This part of Texas has some of the darkest skies in the country making for excellent star watching.
If you are a private pilot, there is an airstrip within a mile of the Sauceda ranger station and only 1/3 mile from the South Leyva campgrounds.

Gotta love the scenery to love this park, because they are spectacular. That said if you are not a camper or hiker, there is little else to occupy your time. A one and a half drive down the state hi-way will take you on a roller coaster ride up and down mountain roads. At one point there is a 15 percent grade and it is scary. Would love to return and camp out, but the best time to go would be spring or early fall as the temps are extremely hot during the summer, it was 110 during our visit.

Great place but needs some landscape work and maintenance to be as advertised. The towns and Big Bend are outstanding. The view from the Rock House is incredible!!

Big bend Ranch State Park has many spectacular views that should not be missed. The drive through the park is equally as memorable as the national park. The roads are very good. Also there are some fun concrete tepees that are good locations for a picnic lunch. Terlingua is an interesting town at the entry to the park that is worth a visit.

Only a few hikes, and not much else. The fort was interesting, but small. It takes a true fan of the desert to appreciate the scenery. Nothing to do in Presidio but get gas and turn around.

Experience Texas the way it is. No paved roads, natural, excellent hiking paths from novice to will I ever get done! Plenty of wildlife to see...

Great desert hiking trails with few people unlike Big Bend National Park which can be quite crowded. Late March is an ideal time as temps are bearable and many cactus are starting to bloom. We did some variations of the East Contrabando Trail system which is right across from the Barton-Warnock visitor center. Day use pass required. Also hiked the West Contrabando-Dome-Fresno Divide trail which is a circular hike, ending where you started. Approximately 8 miles and rated moderate. Good for us older, in shape folks. Get out and go!

The scenery was spectacular. It's a bit different from Big Bend Natl Park. Definitely more rugged. Other than FM170, the park roads are gravel. Some of the gravel roads are suitable for normal sedan/truck/SUV, but others are high-clearance 4x4. If you're out in the Big Bend area, do spend a couple of days exploring the state park.

We are visiting West Texas in April. One of our days trips will be from Marfa. We are going to do the river road scenic drive on highway 170 through Big Bend State Park. I would like to know how long it will take to get from Marfa to Presidio and then onto Lajitas and the drive along the Rio Grande. We don't know speed limits or quality of the roads and are trying to plan accordingly. Any help would be appreciated.

From Marfa to Presidio is fine. Some good grades here and there, but not so tough. That said, from Presidio to Lajitas and beyond is a challenging run. Like I said in my review, the engineers of this highway didn't bother trying to level the surface - they just strictly followed the existing contours. This is one road where closely following the speed limit is a good idea.
The views in some places close to the river are breathtaking. The other areas are desolation. Don't forget to gas up in Presidio!

As we will be camping for a few nights in a very remote site, I am wondering how safe it is. Do we need to break camp every day before setting out, and then re-pitch camp every night? Or is it ok to leave tents pitched?

We saw no one and felt very safe. We did position the truck to block easy entry to our site, but I don’t think you’ll have issues.
Plan to stay at the Big House in December. Knowing it does not have central heat, is this doable with two young children.

I am planning a long-distance motorcycle ride from TN to this area. I will be on a touring bike (Yamaha Royal Star Venture). I like the less traveled two-lane roads without much congestion. How are those roads? Will I be able to visit any ghost towns traveling only those roads? What about scenic rides? Where would you recommend in that area? What time of year is best to visit? Is there limited lodging? What about the cost? What should one budget for this trip? I fully expect to be there for 10-days - 2 weeks. In case of breakdowns, is there a bike shop anywhere nearby? Also, what about the availability of fuel in & around the area?

OK Dale here we go, I'll answer best I can.
you will have no problem with a road less traveled around here.
We went in Oct and personal I'd say Spring and Fall are the best times. Because i know your in TN but you don't know HOT. I'd avoid like hell the summer months.
Yes you can visit the ghost town no problem on the bike. However i will worn you it's probably not what your thinking. It's not large however it is neat. and a must see.
Scenic rides are pretty much any in the park however one of the best drives is thought the state park. GO TO THE STATE PARK! the drive is amazing and stop and visit the movie set and walk thought it. (watch for snakes)
Yes lodging is very limited in the direct area of the park (national and state) and depending on where you stay can be pretty lame accommodations and pretty pricey swanky accommodations. not much in between.
WE stayed at Far Flong Outdoor center and it is by far the best most middle of the road affordable accommodations in the area and is the most center located. I can not recommend this place enough. amazing, and priced right.
I don't remember any bike shops in the area but there are a ton of auto repair shops in terlingua. of a town that seem like 10 people there is like 4 auto repair shops.
Eat at the Starlight Theater. Not for anything more then just because. to say you have. spend 5 min on the "pouch" with the locals again just to say you have.
Not sure if you saw the TV show on NATGeo called Badlands or not but you should find and watch it prior to going. it's very interesting about a murder that happened there a few years back. NOT THAT ITS A BAD PLACE (it's not), that's not my point but you'll get to see alot of the area in the TV show. And likely see some of the people in the tv show around town. We did this past Oct before the TV show came out and when it was on TV said hey we had dinner with that guy (Doc) and so on.
Fuel in terlingua is available and not bad for accessibility.
One word of warning you are at the MX border and because of this about every 3rd car we saw was a Border Patrol or Cop or Sheriff. So no speeding or driving crazy or your asking for it.
if in the national park you want to hike there is a water fall that they have removed form the park maps but is still open that is worth the hike. it's not hard. I'd say moderate. you'll have to ask someone. don't ask a ranger they will tell you it's closed it act like what are you talking about but ask at a store or something and they will tell you.
Hope this helps a little bit. i know there is very little about this area and it's very hard to find and you feel like your going blind. we did but it turned out fine.
FYI if your thinking about staying in alpine.. it's a long freaking ways away. i'd stay in terlingua if possible because it's 10 min form the national park and 15 from the state park.

If you are on Facebook, I recommend connecting with their Facebook Page "Big Bend Ranch State Park - Texas Parks and Wildlife."
My husband and I actually camped out the night that we were there. Vi Dotter, via their Facebook page and Facebook email, was extremely helpful in planning our trip.
When we got to Sauceda Station, they guided us to their big dining room, and we ate our picnic lunch there. It was clean, comfortable, and very pretty.

Hi, Jerome. What would you like to know about this attraction? I'm going to be at BBRanch State Park toward the end of September, driving a rental car. Is the road from the west side of the park to the Sauceda Ranch navigable by a vehicle that is neither 4wd nor high off the ground? How about the road that exits the Park from Sauceda to the east?

Sorry I can't answer that for you. We took the road toward Presidio from Terlingua through the state park and it was paved 2 lane, lots of up and down and lots of curves. We only made it 1/2 way. You might try going to their web sight. Judi

We will be going to Big Bend NP soon. Never been there. Has anyone done a river trip at Big Bend NP? If so, then where is the best place to purchase a trip? I would like to do a raft for us four adults, but it seems like the places online all want so much $$$ for a half day or more River tour. The River looks like lots of cool fun and since we will be there in the hottest time of the year (Aug) i didnt want to miss the Rio Grand River. Is it safe? Still not sure what all we're doing when we get there, any tips appreciated.
Me and my husband did a half a day river trip with big bend river tours. we were not able to do a rafting trip because the river was to low but the canoe trip was still amazing it was worth the money the staff and the guides were so nice and helpful and had great facts and informatio. Hope this helps.

Planning to go there on the Memorial Day weekend 2015, weather forecast says it might rain. Any ideas on how to make the best amid the rains? Also, any information on warnings on the road condition in wet weather would be helpful.

stay off a wet Bofecillos road unless you have a 4 x 4 (between 170 and 169)

Does anyone know about the big starry night star party? I read about it in Texas highways magazine and would love to go in April.
It is at Fort Davis, in the McDonald Observatory. They have a pretty informative web site.
