Fantastic! Really enjoyed our trip to the priory. It was impressive and much bigger than I expected. Lovely plaques so you know what you are looking at and beautiful stone work, quite impressive.

Looked at the tide times, it said we could cross at 10:00 am. Went over at 10:25 and followed other cars over, when we got to the car park it was full, and it was just rows and rows of people 4 width on the pavement, and we thought no this is not going to be an enjoyable experience. so left and went back on to the mainland. We have not visited Holy Island for about 15 years. It was busy then, but not like that. This was October and not half term either in Scotland or England, we were so surprised to see how busy it was.

Although a ruin, the priory is steeped in so much history of Christianity. It dates from AD 634. It has been raided by Vikings, partially ruined, then rebuilt.. its final dissolution in 1536 as a result of Henry VIII's dissolution of the English church's ties to Rome, and his subsequent closing of the monasteries. The masterpiece now known as the Lindisfarne Gospels was created here in the early 8th century. The ruins now visible are those of a 12th-century priory, which claimed direct descent from the early monastery.

Beautifully kept and presented. The museum exhibition was very informative and the ruins are a truly magnificent relic in and of themselves.
Ray was a joy to talk to and very informative. As a Contemporary Celtic Christian I was keen to hear as much as I could about the earlier Anglo-Saxon priory, knowing full well there was little left to interpret. Nonetheless Ray managed to paint a wonderful picture of life on the island at that time based on what is known.
My sister enjoyed looking for the duck.

The small museum is interesting but I would like to see more boards etc explaining the specific history of the Priory. The ruins can be seen best from outside the Church, from the Heugh and the path to the Heugh. As Cadw members with a reciprocal agreement, this didn't bother us though.

I’d wanted to visit Lindisfarne Island etc. since a child. My last visit with children in tow was restricted in breadth, so back in the area again, I thought we could give it another try. As someone who is happy to spend days visiting churches and monasteries and missions it seemed up my alley. But yet again I’m afraid I’m left with the image of people wandering from a big car park to a village with lots of pubs and cafes, to a church ruin, to a priory. I just didn’t feel the spirit at all. Again!
I think better signage and maybe a marked trail (pilgrimage) from church to priory and the Lindisfarne centre would help. It’s all a bit mystifying. Feels more commercial than anything. Needs some money spent on it to bring it up to parr. It can be done tastefully, and enhance the “pilgrim’s” journey. But don’t let me put you off. It might appeal to you. (The mead was nice!)

Steeped in history, well worth a visit.
We spent time looking around and then went down to the beach which was lovely. We could see the seals close by too.

The whole of Lindisfarne island is worth a visit and allow time between tides to wander & enjoy the beauty of this island.
The Priory itself we found underwhelming, for somewhere so steeped in Christian history we thought there would be much more information and surprised there were not even photos of the Lindisfarne Gospels. We were happy to support English Heritage with our admittance fee but to be honest you can get a good view looking down on the Priory remains from the lookout hill behind!

What a beautiful setting for an abbey! I can totally understand why those monks chose to build where they did - the landscape is mesmerizing and, of course, isolated. I can also imagine why it became a draw to the Viking raiders all those centuries ago...once again, it was the isolation that made it vulnerable. Fascinating history. We loved the drama of having to mind the tide tables to drive across the sands to get to the island - OR ELSE! We survived it just fine and didn't have to swim to the rescue tower on the way, LOL. Note that the abbey grounds are quite uneven, so those with mobility issues will need assistance and won't be able to go around certain areas, but there are accessible walkways. Note that you DON'T have to walk all the way from the only public parking area on Holy Island if you have a disability - dropoffs and pickups in front of the visitor's office/gift shop are permissible for people with mobility problems. This is not made clear at the parking area. Interestingly, while there, we watched a lady from a polling/survey company asking people about their visit to Lindisfarne, and by far the biggest complaint, according to what the surveying lady said to someone being interviewed, was accessibility problems for visitors. So, hopefully, all the attractions on Holy Island will combine to help provide better access for not only the handicapped, but the elderly and people with small children. It's a shame they haven't done so already.

We really enjoyed our visit here, lovely to look around. Allow about an hour or two to fully enjoy. Very interesting, there's a lovely free walk around the top of the Priory with excellent views.

How much time should I allow to visit the main sites/shops etc. on Holy Island? Is it pheasable to do it comfortably in a day?
كُتب بتاريخ 6 مايو 2023
Yes a day is fine, but make sure that you check the tide times for getting on and off the island.

Hi we are looking at visiting holy island this weekend 8th feb , but looking at it saying closed , is this just the church or all of holy island
كُتب بتاريخ 3 فبراير 2020
The priory is out in the open - not a closed building. St. Mary's Church is supposed to be open daily - it is lovely and the statuary of the monks carrying St. Cuthbert is really special.

Can you bring a dog to Lindisfarne?

Hello, Dogs are very welcome in the Priory ruin, however we are unable to have dogs in the Museum/Exhibition and the Gift Shop. If there are two of you then we do have a couple of seats outside the Visitor Centre and also a little bench inside where you are welcome to sit with you pooch and take it in turns to do the museum and shop. We always have some lovely doggy biscuit treats under the counter too!

Can you park quite near to the priory? My husband has mobility difficulties.
كُتب بتاريخ 13 أغسطس 2018
You can; although visitors are encouraged to park outside the town, there are car park facilities nearer.
كُتب بتاريخ 14 أغسطس 2018
It seems you have posted this incorrectly; it should be under Lindisfarne Castle.
Good review anyway!

Hello JaninJapan
Thank you for your comment it is always nice to get feedback and provide up go date info for fellow travellers. I am a little perplexed by your observation that I have posted my review incorrectly as my separate reviews for Lindisfarne Priory (titled “moving”) and Lindisfarne Castle (titled “I just don’t get it”) appear to be posted under the appropriate attraction. I wonder if you could shed some light on this with a screen shot?
Happy holidays xx

I have read some reports that the castle is currently covered in scaffolding and plastic sheeting. I see that the national trust web site says the castle will be closed until October of 2018. Does anyone know if the scaffold and plastic will remain for the duration of that time? Or, perhaps, have an estimated idea when it will be removed. We are planning a visit from the U.S. in September of 20017 and while a visit to the interior of the castle wouldn't make or break our visit, I do worry that the obstruction of such a lovely vista might dampen the enthusiasm of our teenage boys.
كُتب بتاريخ 5 يوليو 2017
My understanding was that it's closed completely until October but don't worry about it spoiling your visit, the priory is worth visiting and there are plenty of walks with nice scenery, admire the views from high up or go to the beach. There is a really nice pub in the village called The Ship Inn which serves great food and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Keep checking the website direct and I'm sure they will update details about the castle renovations.

This may seem like a silly question - but do we walk or drive across to the island? Also, am I correct in thinking that my dog can come too? Thanks
كُتب بتاريخ 2 يونيو 2017
Usually you drive, I think it's possible to walk but there are no specific footpaths from what I recall. Also it would take quite a while walking , possibly longer than an hour? Dogs welcome on the island
كُتب بتاريخ 3 يونيو 2017
we plan on visiting on the 26th on crossing times it says safe crossing time is till 13 25 how long dose it take to get from main car park to get back over the causeway is 4 hours long enough to eat look round and visit priory and castle
كُتب بتاريخ 14 مايو 2017
so if the last safe crossing time is 13.25 then to have 4 hours on the island you should be going over to the island no later than 9.25 am thus giving you 4 hours over there so you can cross back before 13.25 its only a 5 minute drive over on a tarmac causway. have a good trip.
كُتب بتاريخ 15 مايو 2017
This is a slightly strange question as most people want to know when the island is least crowded as the parking can be bad. The Island is most busy during the Easter and August school holidays as well as at weekends for most of the year and Bank Holidays. At the moment I would Imagine that some of the attractions and cafes are closed and the place is deserted. If you are going to visit check if the Priory and Castle are open as they are the main attractions then check the tide times. If you want to get a parking space when the Island is likely to be busy arrive at the Causeway 15 to 30 minutes before the advertised time for safe crossing so you will be at the front of the queue. I hope this is helpful.
