this is a wonderful trail through the High Weald AONB. Although close to London it feels undiscoverd and undistrubed. Classic English countryside at its best with woods, vistas, villages and pubs.

The High Weald Landscape Trail, easily recognisable by its green and white signs, is a 95 mile route that meanders through the East Sussex and Kent areas of Outstanding Beauty. The Trail enters the market town at the Smallhythe end of High Street and leaves the town through Bell Lane. Tenterden, with its wide tree-lined High Street, may look Georgian, as many of the buildings on the High Street have elegant column-edged doorways and long sash windows, but this is deceptive beause many of these buildings are, in fact, Medieval and Tudor faced with brick or tiles as, during 18th and 19th centuries, tiles became easily available and fashionable. If you go into any of Tenterden's pubs, such as The Woolpack, a quick look at their heavily-beamed interiors shows their real age. By the way, Tenterden has more pubs per mile than any other town inn England, apart from Hythe, 20 miles away. On the High Street is Tenterden's War Memorial and, at the High Street's widest part, are the Greens. It was on the Greens that the Tenterden Fairs and weekly stock markets were held. Today, it seems strange to talk about weekly stock markets but it was only fairly recently, in 1974 at the May Fair, that more than 2,500 sheep changed hands. Situated behind a building given to perpetuate the townspeople who fell during the Second World War, is the Millennium Gardens; a pleasant, quiet place away from the hustle and bustle of High Street. Towering above the town is the four-spired tower of the Parish Church of St Mildred. The Church is built of Bethersden marble, a highly prized limestone quarried from seams in the Wealden clay to the north. The Trail leaves by the narrow, picturesque Bells Lane with its weatherboarded cottages squeezed together. Today, Bells Lane is a different place to what it was in the 1900s when, due to fights and drunkent behaviou of those who lived there, it had a very bad reputation
