I am usually a solo traveller, but the logistic of driving up Cape York Peninsula defeated me. The website for Off Road Adventure Safaris was alluring. I deliberately only skimmed it so as to keep a sense of the unexpected (my usual holidays are micro-planned with the aid of Tripadvisor, comfortable but predictable).
If I had arranged this for myself I would have missed so much. Mark's local knowledge and more importantly local contacts took us to places off the (not very) beaten track. When things didn't quite go to plan, there was always a plan B.
Accommodation ranged from the routine (Laura Motel, Musgrave Roadhouse) to the sublime (Jabiru Safari Lodge, Mungumby Lodge, Portland House - places I would have missed if I had been in charge). Food was generally decent (and often better) with morning and afternoon teas taken by river (or on one occasion IN a river with water running across our feet) or clearings in the jungle.
Mark's contacts (and his friendly manner) allowed us to upgrade our accommodation at some places. Local guides gave us the inside information and took us to out of the way spots (e.g rock art galleries at Laura.)
Individual needs are catered for - there are a maximum of eight guest on the tour - mine had 6.
A special time for me was going out alone with Mark one dawn in his small boat to fish - and then going out again that afternoon on foot at low tide to retrieve the anchor that had become lodged in a mangrove root. The tide came in quicker than we expected and we had to struggle through the mangroves and bush to avoid a crocodile, while facing up to a wild pig and the chance of venomous snakes - this is a tale that gets taller in the telling.
I was sad to say goodbye to Mark on Horn Island before flying back to Cairns (but when we returned to civilisation there was one last surprise.)
I can't praise Mark too highly. I may not do a tour again, but I am very glad I did this one.

Thank you for the glowing testimonial. I am so glad that we could supply you with a magic moment for each of the days on tour. The one at Pajinka though, Hmmm :)
You are correct in that the unexpected bush walk has taken on a life of it's own in the retelling. My current version has us sounding like a cross between Sir David, Steve Irwin and Russell Coight.
Fishing in the $50 tinnie remains my magic moment. The look on your face when I handed you the rod attached to a nice trevally was priceless. Not a bad catch for a first fish in a long time.
It was an absolute pleasure to spend time with you and your quick wit always managed to give all of us a great laugh.
May all your travels be full of magic moments. I look forward to catching up for the trip to Fraser Island. Your turn to drive.

For starters we are over 70 and active.
Stumbled ont Marks website and figured if he takes his tour to Bamaga then the tour boat/ flies back to Cairns then he has to get his vehicle back to Cairns.
We proposed to Mark that as he had not done a tour "the Tip (Panjinka )back to Cairns would he consider doing one for us if we got ourselves to Bamaga.
We are in Brisbane so we started looking at the cost of Flying to Bamaga to meet Mark for his Return to Cairns.
It turns out that the fares to Horn Island and a helicopter flight to Punsand Bay are cheaper than a flight to Bamaga.
We contacted Roger at Punsand Bay to check if there was accomodation available to coincide with the end of Marks Tour and there was.
As well Roger at Punsand Bay said he would organise Bungee helicopters to pick us up from Horn Island.
So the stars are in alignment we are going to self drive Brisbane to Cairns and Fly QUANTAS to Horn Is then helicopter to 2 nights at Punsand Bay where Off Road Safaris Mark will pick us up for day 1 of our tour back to Cairns.

We wanted to travel to the tip of the Australian continent by road which entails 4WD which is not in our capabilities. To us a group of 20 is NOT a small group. We chose to go with Off Road Adventure Safaris who take a max of 8 people but we were very fortunate to be the only 2 on tour. We were blessed to be able to enjoy nature along the way with the sounds of bird song rather than people chatter. Our guide, driver and companion on the trip, Mark, is a chatterer but his chatter was full of enthusiasm and knowledge of what we were experiencing from the small insects to crocodiles and the history of the places we visited. We learned a lot from him and could appreciate everything all the more for his explanations and stories of the land, people, indigenous history and culture, flora and fauna. Accommodation covered the spectrum of excellent to average (was mixed) as is to be expected in such remote places but was always clean and comfortable. We had some memorable meals in fantastic settings. The bus we travelled in was excellent and even on the corrugations was only a little rough but that added to the experience. Thank you Mark for a great trip.

Buy yourself a Hema Cape York map featuring the Old Telegraph Track to get a feel of how special this trip with Mark is.Not a shopping mall in sight. We travelled by 4WD, ferry, helicopter,straits water taxis and aeroplanes. Mark was happy to cater for any travel preferences we had to give the trip a private charter feel. Food and accommodation ranged from the clean and practical to the exotic in magic locations. Indigenous cave art viewing a must to see with the help of the Quinkan Gallery in Laura. The Lockhart River Art Centre and Badu Art centre on Thursday Island had tempting exhibitions. His itinerary was conservatively expressed and we were never disappointed. Oh and you could have a magic swim safely but only in certain spots.
If you never thought of yourself as a tour group person, think again. The group is small and the benefits of a tour leader with experience and knowledge far outweigh any fears you may have of joining a tour.

We have just returned after a great trip to Cape York with Off Road Adventure Safaris. We chose this tour because it was a small group tour which really paid off. Mark, our guide had incredible knowledge of the Cape and each day he added value and exceeded expectations. We were taken to creeks and waterholes off the main roads. Accommodation was varied and good and we met some great locals along the way. Food was of a high standard, particularly as we were in remote Australia. Mark's attention to detail combined with his knowledge and experience made this a holiday to remember. We could not have done it by ourselves.

If adventure is what you want then off road adventure safari is the place to go.
We had nothing but the best of everything that a camping trip camping trip could offer starting from the places we went the food we ate and being Italian we were a bit picky and Mark did a wonderful job in the food department.
Mark our tour guide took us to some of the most incredible place our country offers. By starting in Cairns and ending at the top.
We had the most memorable time forming memories that will last a life time. Thanks for all you did mark.
Remember "go hard go deep"

What a fantastic journey and experience from the very beginning. Nothing was ever too much trouble for Mark our tour guide. From discovering the marvellous aboriginal arts at Split rock, seeing crocs, bush turkeys and did lots of fishing. I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience at camping and four wheel driving and wouldn't hesitiste to do it again.
Some highlights were visiting Leura and seeing the first car that drove on the Old Telegraph road. Going off track to Kennedy Bend and seeing two magnificent crocodiles across the river also The birdlife at Lakefield is great for nature lovers. Thoroughly enjoyed fishing with the group. Last but not least reaching Cape York the highest point in Australia was breathtaking,
This was an amazing lifetime experience which I highly recommend and was lucky enough to have great company in our group called 'Team Italia'
Thanks again Mark for a wonderful trip.

Thank you for the review, it is appreciated.
Your wicked (and sometimes warped) sense of humour was a catalyst for some belly breaking laughs for the rest of us. Of all the photos from this tour the one of you with the green tree frog will long remain one of my favourites.
I appreciate your compliments in regard to my driving especially when considering that you also drive professionally for a living.

I have just experienced the most wonderful time visiting Cape York with Off Road Safari Adventures. This trip certainly exceeded all expectations.
This was all due to the experienced owner and tour Guide Mark. From the food to the exceptional driving, Mark had all areas covered to the highest standard for our group of seven "Team Italia".
This was a trip of a lifetime with great friends and is not to be missed. We are already planning the next one with Mark!

I have just spent the most amazing time on Cape York with Off Road Adventure Safaris. Our tour guide and owner of the business was Mark. To say that he gave us a good time would be an massive understatement at least.
Mark is a highly experienced tour guide who goes out of his way to cater for the individual needs of his guests.
Our tour was a private charter camping safari which involved seven participants and a second vehicle. Obtainig a suitable vehicle was a story in itself which endorsed Mark’s committment to our satisfaction before we even met him.
The tour was run with a laid back style which meant that we never felt that we were being rushed from one point to another. All the main sites of Cape York were included in the itinerary with some hidden gems thrown in for good measure. The extras that Mark supplies (fishing gear,sunset platters, $50 dollar tinnies and more) make the journey all the more enjoyable.
The two night stay at Portland Roads and the visit to the Lockhart River Art Centre was well received by all in the group.
At our initial meeting Mark stated that his goal was that by the time we retured to Cairns he wanted us to feel that we had been part of Cape York, not just driven over the top of it. This goal was well and truley achieved.

Team Italia, What a trip that was. Which is why the current banner photo on our Facebook page features the artistic talent of the chef extraordinaire. I could say many things about this trip, about what an awesome bunch of guys you are, however one of my fondest memories was sharing the view from the roof of the trailer with you. Cheers John. Z

Off Road Adventure Safari has given us an experience of a lifetime! A trip planned and executed by our favourite 4wd driver in flawless fashion - with every attention given to the smallest detail throughout. Mark's knowledge and understanding of the country, the people, the flora and fauna was outstanding, and his knowledge of hidden gems off the beaten track added to our overall enjoyment. To say nothing of his capacity to anticipate all our needs and desires! The accommodation and meals were fantastic. This particular safari should be on everyone's "must do" list.
