OMG looking for this on the Leanganook Track as per the address listed will get you lost... so don't do it! Instead follow North Road... there is a small street sign to indicate where you turn. BUT don't do the track... you will just follow a rough road and wonder where the heck you are going.
So... once you follow North Road ... follow the road which becomes dirt, in good condition to a car park. The car park is not formal, so there are no lines or bitumen. The exciting bit for you here is that not too far from the carpark is the site that was once where the wheel was.
The Water Wheel that was here was the largest diameter wheel ever constructed in Victoria. It provided power to the stamp battery for extracting gold from ore produced by the Garfield Mine between 1887 and 1903.
The wheel's massive stone supports are very significant historic mining features because of their association with a major gold mining area and important nineteenth century technology. The mine site is listed on the registers of the National Estate, Government Buildings and the National Trust.
Great to stand there in awe at the size, or you could read the nearby information boards that give you some great background, or you could take photographs... the stone structure probably has secrets it could share if it could speak and tell us about what it had seen. Either way... this is a great place to visit.

Very impressive water wheel remnant. Nice short walk available too. It would be better if the site's had individual signs rather than just numbers that are referred to at the main sign.

This amazing stone ruin is all that remains of what was once an enormous water wheel that was used to crush quartz and rock to extract gold. The height of the wall indicates the centre of this enormous wheel carrying 220 buckets which was filled by water to drive it. There were also building around the side of it and they have all but disappeared, although it is possible see the remains of some other industrial structures close by. The thumping noise could be heard as far away as Castlemaine (which in reality is close by nowadays). Take a look at a few maps before you go and also note that it is a dirt road that will take you there. There is plenty of information at the site and a couple of walks you can do to explore the region. It is amazing to imaging that over 133 years after it was build the massive stone structure still remains. Totally worth a visit.

This beautiful stone ruin is all that remains of an enormous water wheel used to crush the rock to extract gold. The height of the wall indicates the centre of this enormous wheel carrying 220 buckets which was filled by water to drive it around. The battery hammered its constant thumping noise at more than once per second and could be heard as far away as Castlemaine. At Chewton go down North Rd to the Castlemaine Diggings National Park. The track becomes dusty as you leave the bitumen but the stone ruins are right next to a small car park. Not very well signposted from the Castlemaine Road. Should be clearer for the tourists. Totally worth a visit for a trip back in time.
