Out of the several thousand monasteries in Armenia, Haghpat was listed as one of the recommended ones to visit. Having visited Akhtala Monastery before this, our guide reminded us that Haghpat is an Armenian monastery, not an Orthodox one. It’s an UNESCO heritage site and there are graves everywhere on the ground. Armenians consider it respectful to walk on graves and in fact it’s impossible not to walk on any of them. It’s a fairly large monastery, with chapel, choir room, wine making room etc. If youre monastery hopping in north Armenia, Haghpat is worth a visit.

Haghpat Monastery is a medieval monastery complex in Haghpat, Armenia, built between the 10th and 13th century. It finds a place in Unesco world heritage list because the site "represent the highest flowering of Armenian religious architecture, whose unique style developed from a blending of elements of Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture and the traditional vernacular architecture of the Caucasian region"

Wonderful monastery complex. Gorgeous buildings isolated within stunning landscapes. Impressive art and nature. While mostly painting is the striking feature in Armenia, here fantastic architecture is on display. A must see when in Armenia.

Visited this site for about 45 minutes . The setting is very nice and it is a peaceful , atmospheric place to reflect , enjoy nature and look at awe of these old buildings and how they restored it . It certainly creates a nice setting to visit the place . I went there as part of a day tour to N Armenia via Georgia

Beautiful monastery in very scenic area of Haghpat. Well worth visiting but note that it is in a remote area with few shops, cafes available. Very nice man in the monastery who tried explaining to me the significance of the building.

the googlemap directions to here is wacky. so please dont follow blindly. it will lead you to crazy alleys that will damage your car. but there is a main paved road that will end up in front of haghpat monastery

This impressive and ancient UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must while visiting Lori Province. Several buildings around the grounds can be explored, each used for different purposes centuries ago.
Take some time to admire the breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and plateaus. You can climb up to the top of some ruins at the back of the property for the best views of the entire complex.
I highly recommend visiting the monastery with a group tour so you can get deep historical information about the complex as there is little to no information or plaques around the grounds for visitors. The historical significance is a huge part of experiencing this place. Or do research before visiting on your own!
Ladies do not need to cover their hair in Armenian churches. The grounds are hilly and gravel in some parts so come prepared with sturdy shoes.

Monastery that exudes great energy, located on top of a mountain overlooking the Debed. So much history, so many emotions. Highly recommended

These ruins are reminiscent of the old days. Much has been restored and the spacious grounds invite you to linger here

Has the road to Haghpat/Sanahin monastries opened? I plan to drive there after crossing the border from Georgia on 21st September morning. Please confirm the state of road repairs/motorability urgently. Thanks.
