‪Beautiful lake views, great coverage of Adirondack history, lovely grounds, and a cafe with reasonably price and yummy food! The best part was feeding the trout in the lake!‬

‪We stopped here while driving through the Adirondack Mountains. It has a number of different buildings, including an old school house, a hunting cabin, a boat museum, a home with beautiful, historic, Adirondack style furniture, art, and a small cafe with a beautiful view of the lake. It takes 3-4 hours to see everything. We really enjoyed our visit.‬

‪This was a well run and responsible facility to obtain information years ago. I recently tried to obtain some information regarding some antique and vintage Adirondack items that I own. They are items of significance and I was looking for guidance regarding specifics relating to them. That being said I contacted them via the “Contact Us” link on their web site without the courtesy of any response.

Obviously it’s unprofessional and begs the question” Why have a contact link if you don’t respond to it?” It’s another example of if the process is just (creating a web page for the consumer convenience) then the outcome must be just ( serving the community). The two do not necessarily correlate.

I also wrote the director pointing out my issue, and again, no response after a week.

I can only assume that my experience is a reflection of the current management and makes we aphrenrsive as to the veracity and the accuracy of any information they would provide concerning Adirondack history.

It’s sad to see institutions of knowledge deteriorate like this and inquiries being handled with such blatant disregard. I can only assume that this attitude is reflected in any “ experience” you pay for.‬

‪This was recommended to us, so went up one day not knowing what to expect. And after visiting it, not sure how to even describe. It is an eclectic collection of everything Adirondack. There is art, history, activities. Our admission was for two days, and the first day was raining, so we skipped from building to building. There was a huge one of varied stuff (everything from a restored rail car, to an interactive log jam video game, so a rowing simulator), one on boats, one on furniture, another on working in the woods (forestry), an old fire tower to climb, one on art. We spent about 6-7 hours, and could have missed parts of it. it is in various buildings, so you can get turned around pretty easy. Because of the thunder the first day, we decided to use the second day of our admission to see the boathouse. We arrived fairly early in the morning, and there were 3 folks working at the boat house, put our family into two Adirondack guide boats and sent out out into the lake. Because they were not busy, there was no rush, no "come back quickly so others can try" just go and have a good time.

Certainly different groups would enjoy different parts of this museum. There were things for younger folks (like you can make your own art at the end of the art museum, although that maybe older folks also), and stuff for older folks, like a whole pavilion on birds, or looking over a display on furniture. Lots of staff around, willing to answer questions. Some staff did seem to be more on the "security" than information, but most offered to answer any questions, and involve you in discussions about the displays.

While you could probably get through and see everything pretty quickly in 3-4 hours, especially if you have younger kids with shorter attention spans, it is also very possible to spend 2 days there. Certainly one of the most eclectic museums I have ever been to, but something of interest to anyone. ‬

‪The museum was amazing as each building housed a different type of exhibit from old boats, to art, to sports, to historical items. The patio views past colorful flowers to the Blue Mountain Lake were just gorgeous. The docents were most helpful and friendly. One needs at least 3 hours to see it all and we ran out of time, sadly. ‬

‪Had a rainy day up in the Lake George area, so based on reviews went to the museum. Disappointed that there was a lot of outside traveling through the museum, as we did get wet while walking through. Very interactive and interesting. It kept my 7yo occupied for almost a full day. The food was decent and not too expensive. The view from the cafe was amazing.‬

‪What a gem! Unbelievable for all ages with loads of educational aspects for kids. The history tells itself through the artifacts, dioramas and experts in each building. Be ready to spend 3 hours at least. Magnificent views with a cafe on site.‬

‪When we drove through Adirondack Mountain state park with over six million acres of forest, we were in awe. With the sun finally out and the trees so majestic and powerful, we wanted to just pull over and stare at them. Then we found a picnic spot to sit and eat that opened up right next to the Hudson River.

Views of the Adirondack Mountains and its magnificent conifers were widely on display. The fir, hemlock, Northern and Eastern red cedar, and golden Tamarack; the black, white, red and Norway Spruce; and the White, Jack, Pitch, Red, and Scotch Pines, soared to the skies with upturned dark forest green branches. They were the perfect background for the fuller and broader hardwood trees that were changing into colorful leaves. They were the Basswood, Beech, and Elm, the American, White, and Black Ash; the Poplar and Quaking Aspen, the Black and Pin Cherry, and the Serviceberry; the Gray, White, Yellow and Paper Birch; the Hophornbeam; the Mountain, Red, Striped, and Sugar Maple; and the Red Oak. Each of these in their own time would turn from bright green to olive, then yellow, gold, orange and burst into red. The drive was spectacular and it was only the beginning of the fall, as they would explode into full color in late October.

At near the midpoint of the state forest we came to the Adirondack Experience. After just having driven through the forest, what could be more experiential? Ah, but the experience makers had other ideas. We entered to discover the site included looking over Blue Mountain Lake. Next to the lake, one could relax beside a pond in an Adirondack chair. But the experience went way beyond that. Across 120 acres one could visit twenty different buildings, which fully explained everything about visiting and living in the Adirondacks. Historically, people have been traveling to the area before there were automobiles, and they came any way that they could. But it was the Louisville & Nashville express that carried people in style with posh accommodations. There were sitting rooms, dining cars, gaming table cars, private sleeping cars and private bathrooms.

Not wanting to see every building, nor did we have the time, we focused on the main history building. Murals and large signs directed us along to read about the area’s past, explaining many aspects of the early years, and showing us the machines that were used for maple sugaring, ice harvesting, hunting and forestry. One could sit in a canoe surrounded by photographed murals for taking pictures, and a portion was dedicated to the original tribal people of the area. There were examples of log cabins that the wealthy built with the iconic style of decorative stick and tree branch inlay around doors and windows, and with hand-made furnishings. In one cabin, four deer feet were attached to the wall and used as coat hangers. The wealthy also brought heavy stoves and artistic décor to fill their wilderness cabins. There were several videos of workers speaking to the visitor, as if the viewer were part of that earlier time. The first one was a miner welcoming the viewer as a new underground iron worker about to start the day. He spoke about the dangers and low pay, and if we failed or died from the hard work that we could be easily replaced.

Had we continued on we could have seen the boat house, where all manner of boats were used on the lake, about the woods and how they were felled and managed, and through photographs how people lived in the woods. There was Bull Cottage, built in 1901, which now serves as a detailed example of how a person could enjoy the cabin life. We could have stayed longer and seen much more, but somehow the trees and the water were calling to us more than the production, so it was easy to depart and just stare out across the lake.It all must once have felt like a getaway paradise, and the experience did a good job of showing that.
