In late June,I returned to the Hood Art Museum and I was very fascinated with the Assyrian Reliefs from the Northwest Palace of King Ashurnaspiral The Second(883-859 BC.,The reliefs at the Hood Art Museum consist of 6 panels. They were discovered in Nimrud,in present day Iraq. The panels depict the king and the genie. The panels arrived at Dartmouth in 1856.
I also appreciated the Hood's Old Master European Paintings.far from encyclopedic.but i saw wonderful paintings by Pietro Perugino and Workshop("Virgin and Child With Saints",Italian Renaissance),Luca Giordano("Allegory of Touch",Italian Mannerism),Giovanni Beinaschi("Saint Paul The Hermit",Italian Mannerism),Frans Hals("Portrait of Man",Dutch Master),Jan Davidz de Heem("Stillife With Grapes"),Nicolas Rene Jollain("Belisarius Begging For Alms",French),Angelica Kaufmann("Telemachus in Sparta"),and Louis de Silvestre("Alexander and Diogenes"),among others.
I saw fine Contemporary Works of Art by Nicolas Cave,Jeffrey Gibson, and Woomin Kim(quality Textile Art), I also was captivated by the delightful mural,"Epic of Civilization",a huge work of Art with 24 panels produced by Mexican Muralist,Jose Clemente Orozco in the early 1930's.This mural is housed in the basement of the Baker Library on the campus of Dartmouth. This mural is inder the supervision of the Hood Art Museum.
So enjoy this fine free art museum and enhance your knowledge of Art.

We had a great experience viewing art in this museum. The structure itself is an architectural delight, with expansive, interestingly shaped rooms that flow smoothly one to the next or invite you around a secret corner to discover new delights. The exhibits were extremely interesting and well-curated. I was gratified to see a student group excitedly taking in the art and having a guided discussion.

The Hood feels like an art museum that's undergone a renovation, both physically and philosophically. The galleries are large and well laid out, and the choice of what to put on display is very different from what I remember seeing in say the 1970's. There's a real commitment to DEI and presenting more than 'conventional' Western art. Displays like "Liquidity: Art, Commodities, and Water" also challenge the way we perceive even the 'conventional' art. This is a museum that leans more towards presentations that stimulate thinking as opposed to trying to display art history (although there are some fine examples of European works also). I like the overall vision the Hood projects, and with free admission you can't beat the price.
Watch out for where your GPS sends you. We wound up in a back parking lot without parking spaces. Also note, parking may be a bit of a problem.

What a wonderful experience. We stopped in to visit and had a wonderful time with the family. The museum was two floors of gallery space with such a wonderful display of contemporary work along with classical work. I truly enjoyed the experience and to top it all off it was free.

Worth visiting (it's free, so nothing lost if you don't like it). We would return anytime they change the temporary exhibition but the permanent exhibits are fairly minimal.

A wonderful small museum with excellent gallery space and architecture. The exhibitions were innovative and very well curated. I've been in dozens of great museums all over the world and I have to put Hood in my top 10!

This is free so why not. If you are in Hanover it’s worth seeing. It does not compare with the Yale or Harvard museums. Easy to do in 30 minutes. The first gallery downstairs with the Assyrian panels is the only room of any consequence .

Friends told us about this museum and we're glad they did. Admissions is free. Won't take up too much of your time. Can spend maybe a hour there.

Made a repeat visit after remodeling in 2017(?). No longer "old and dusty." User friendly, easier to find galleries and a real pleasure to visit, especially when the temp.is below
O°,the wind is gusty and its too cold to ski. I will visit again and soon as I live nearby.
