There's a series of parks on the Mississippi River between St. Paul and Minneapolis confusingly overseen by state or federal government units depending on the site. Coldwater Spring is a tiny park between Fort Snelling and Minnehaha Falls. It's heavily wooded and the main attraction is a natural - and extremely smelly - spring and pond. It's relatively easy to reach less than a half mile from the parking, but it's not much to look at - a stone canopy and some landscaped rocks overlook the spring and that's about it.

it was fun to wander around on a hot day play a little! the structure is interesting, especially with the fort (Fort Snelling) so near. But I like to think further back to the Native residents. I like the trails nearby down to the river in the gorge.
the small waterfall is another opportunity to play a bit.
dog park is so close by who knew??
Love Minneapolis.

Even though one person has said there is free parking, I am not sure where it is. It is a need to see place, but parking is a nightmare on a summer weekend. I would recommend getting there as early as possible to get a good parking spot, say seven in the morning. A couple of times we have been there on a weekend, cars were parked anywhere they could find a spot, in a vicinity of over a mile. Even on Friday when we finally got a parking spot by 12 it was filling up. The cold water spring were OK but there is more to this than the spring. It does have an interesting history which I recommend checking out on Wikipedia. The spring is actually protected by a man made structure under the surface to protect the spring's water flow. The spring in mid August was not gushing and be careful of little ones, the spring is in a dry well about four feet deep. The spring is no more than a decayed building with some rock structures. They have done a great job of restoring the area. The wild life is pretty awesome for somewhere in the middle of a city. I saw dragonflies, crickets, butterflies, Goldfinch, woodpecker, a deer, and other things that went bump in the brush, The path varied from gravel service roads, to concrete paths, to smaller rut paths, to a one person path. There is a phone tour but the signs are slowly being overtaken by the brush. Also this park runs into the Minnehaha Park so there is a lot of trails. There is so many terrains, waterfalls, brush, trees, and rocky areas. There were no signs for the trails so you can get sort a lost but this is in the middle of a city, you will run into civilization sooner or later. In August, there are a lot of the summer flowers blooming as well. It is just a gorgeous place and very tranquil. The more primitive the trail the less the people will see especially in the Minnehaha area. Minnehaha is a very busy park. One of the pictures shows a picture a map of the two parks.

This National Park is a gem. Located nearly close enough to spot at Highways 55 & 62 and Hiawatha Ave. this spot is so quiet and peaceful. We accessed it while biking on the trail along the Mississippi River and followed the creek up to its start. The little tower marks the spring. It’s surrounded by a pool. Enjoy the ducks and wildflowers. The space around used to be part of the US Bureau of Mining, but the old buildings are gone with a few foundations remaining. Today they’re a lovely backdrop to a restored prairie. Use your phone to take an audio tour to learn more about the history and status of this gorgeous national land.

As with many parts of government-owned property near Fort Snelling, this is a natural ruin. Unfortunately, as with others, it is also poorly marked and mapped. It could be a lovely place for nature tours--a little gem. It has a long history related to the natural fresh water springs (strategic importance for Ft Snelling and early settlement).
A dedicated tour guide could enthrall children with tales of mystery here. Nature lovers could be shown some of the unique local wildflowers blossoming right along the paths.
This site is good for experienced walkers, church groups, small photographic groups or scouts or naturalists...a little difficult walking for very young children and walking challenged adults. Some birding possible...
SUMMARY: Wouldn't it be great to find some of the indigenous fur-bearing animals that once scampered all over here...beaver, muscrat, mink, etc...there ARE rabbits of course ! Anyway, so close to the Twiin Cities this is an easy escape to nature and quiet. Recommend.

I finally found the park today, more by accident than anything else. I parked my car and seeing no directions as to which way of several possibilities to start walking I headed down a dirt path that soon came to a paved path, after following it awhile and seeing nothing of particular interest I continued the dirt path past the totem pole. I soon came to a fenced area the was posted as government property, no trespassing. I found my brief time here disappointing and no way would I go back alone, I did not feel safe at all. I will visit it again when I have someone else along and maybe find a different path.

Coldwater Springs is a hidden gem. It is often overlooked because it is very close to Minnehaha Falls.

Where exactly did you walk, and did you find the springs? I stopped there today and after walking 1/2 mile down the trail I turned back, I did not feel safe being along. I saw a totem pole and an area with logs piled in the shape of teepees but that was it.
