Większość jej mieszkańców to Berberowie .

Patrimonio Unesco. L'attuale situazione non consente purtroppo alcun programma.

Ghadames, is the Berber Pearl of the Sahara, located at the edge of the Sahara Desert, close to the Libyan-Algerian border.
The old city of Ghadames is the oldest habitable medina in the entire Sahara. The oasis being one of the busiest caravan trade centres in the Libyan Sahara, with caravan routes connecting it with Fezzan and Sub-Saharan Africa, Algeria, Tunisia and the northern parts of Libya. If you have enough time,I advice to travel here by road from Trablus, because you can find a chance to see other desert villages. One of the main features of the old town is the fact that it is built entirely out of mud and is completely covered, except for small ventilation holes found occasionally along its dark lanes and labyrinthine passages and streets. This ancient design has a good reason to be invented in the Sahara: the mud houses maintain a cool town in the summer and warm habitat in the freezing winter nights. In addition to protection from the scorching heat of the desert sun, the roof of the city acts like another city with complete open streets and lanes, exclusively used by women, to move from one house to another and from one area to the other. Hence it does not come as a surprise that Ghadames has been declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. The interiors of the houses are uniquely painted with intricate Berber designs, using red paint on white walls, and decorated with hanging ornaments; giving the rooms a vibrant and fascinating atmosphere, which makes Ghadames truly unique. The traditional Berber designs used include the triangle, the diamond, the sun, the moon, the palm, the eye, the hand, and the Tuareg cross. The objects used to decorate the rooms include mirrors, ornaments made of palm straw, brass and copper, and Berber carpets, rugs and cushions.

Heyecanlanmayın,korkmayın,fakat kesinlikle tek başınıza dolaşmayın,hala bazı evlerde yaşam devam etmekte,önünüze her an orada iskan eden birileri çıkabilir.800 yıllık tarihi camide hala ibadet edilmektedir. Dikkatli gezmeler.

If you manage to get into libya.... then cross country t less miles of lawless Saharan wasteland you will see this oasis paradise. As you walk the empty abandoned city you will swear the ghosts of the past are guiding you (it's spooky ok!). What's that you hear??? Well its sure not a tourist!!, you will have the whole city to yourself!!. Best to find a local though he will most defiantly have a family house filled with history and of course stories to show you

The city of Ghadames is diverse as you can step back into the "old" city, which is no longer inhabited, or walk through the streets of the "new" city. There is much history to be gleaned in Ghadames! You can explore the lower passageways of the old city with its many twists and turns, or climb to the rooftop "streets" where only the women were able to walk in the past. The dunes are also a "must see" just outside of the city, and the little mountain of Ras A'Ghoul allows you to view Libya, Algeria, and Tunisia simultaneously. I would highly recommend a trip to Ghadames should you have the opportunity!

A visit to Ghadames promises to be a highlight for anyone travelling in this region. It is thought to be one of the three ancient cities - Damascus, Jericho and Ghadames - and there's history at every turn in this charming place. No other city has the architecture that marks the Old City, now protected as a UNESCO site, with its winding arcaded passageways, and multi-level living quarters. Stunning frescoes and elaborate handicrafts make for some amazing photos. Ghadames has lost its tourism base in recent Libyan troubles, and that's a pity. It deserves a wider audience, and I hope my review encourages some to include a trip to see a real Sahara oasis.
