Set right on the Merrimack Rivery, this historic building is filled with memorable maritime objects and history. An added plus were holiday decorations in every window, celebrating all the holidays of the season--Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and others I'd never heard of!

Great local maritime museum located in the former US Customs House from when Newburyport was a major port for imports to the Merrimack River during the Industrial Revolution. Exhibits include maritime history, shipbuilding, Customs and the lifesaving and military history in the Merrimack River estuary. Friendly and helpful staff and a reasonable admission make this a use see attraction when in the area.

Be sure to take a guided tour as things are explained very well by the guide. Takes about an hour and well worth the $7.00 admission.

Over the past 20+ years since my last visit, the Custom House Maritime Museum has expanded its displays.
The first exhibit I viewed on this visit was the on the Newburyport Marine Society.
As a sailor and a person who has lived a life close to the sea, paintings of tall ships from olden days always interest me.
I particularly liked the exhibit on the Coast Guard.
It was good to see equipment form the days of the U.S. Life Saving Service.
Another exhibit was on the US Customs Service.
My favorite was the special exhibit on taverns. There were a lot of tavern signs. I noticed a deck of cards. People would play cards in taverns back in the old days. The local tavern was a social center and a place to get the latest news. There were several artifacts of note: a tankard, a punch bowl, and corkscrews. The large metal teapots were a curiosity.
In the Mosley Gallery, I found the design of the Ship’s Apothecary Box very interesting.
I was glad that I’d revisited this wonderful maritime museum.
I rate my experience at 5.0 and highly recommend a visit.

We visited this museum on a day when it was about 75 degrees outside, but the museum was incredibly hot and stuffy. I have short hair and it was dripping sweat as we went through the collection. As near as we could tell we (2 of us) and the docent collecting admission fees, were the only people inside. Anyhow, I know it isn't fair to compare this place to other maritime museums we've gone through, but an opportunity has been missed to make it interesting. We expected there to be a more lively presentation of the special exhibit dealing with the role of the ordinaries/public houses in colonial America, but it was more of the same. I think that having someone update the information cards on exhibits might be an inexpensive way to create interesting context for the contents. We were in Newburyport during a special maritime celebration and a big tent was being erected on the lawn in the back of the property, so I guess I thought there'd be more excitement inside. Would not recommend unless you are a hardcore maritime museum lover.

Stopped here on the drive north to Maine. We read about the Maritime Museum while entering Newburyport and decided to give it a visit. There are two levels of exhibits but the museum is a bit cold and dark. The exhibits are interesing however.

This is a small museum in a beautifully restored stone building.
You can see the history of the Coast Guard and Maritime importance of the area.

Event planners rent out the lawn in front of this historic museum, right in the center of town, we had a wedding here it was beautiful, call early to get a spot, in the center of town and parking available! You need a caterer and a tent, but worth it!!!
