Very well preserved in Ethiopian standards. Ancient, really intricate structures still standing to this day. Makes you wonder what the place was like back then

The stelae field is really interesting. It is astonishing that there are some still standing after all these years.

オベリスクの写真を撮るだけであれば入場料も払わず外から見ることができるが地下にある墓や建造途中のものなどを見るのであればガイドとともに訪れるほうがいい

I don't know how many people will be traveling in the near future, but I now have a lot of time to catch up on reviews from my last trip. I believe this is the same place as the number one attraction, "The Ruins of Aksum" (aka Axum). Regardless it is an interesting and unique burial ground unlike any I have seen anywhere (with the giant stelae). You can also enter some of the tombs and there is a museum adjacent to the field. There is an interesting story regarding one of the very large stelae that was taken to Italy and returned years later.

I arrived in Axum by myself. I met Mulugeta- my tour guide where my adventure started. It was an experience after experience. Did you know that the Queen of Sheba used to reside in that area? As well as one of the wise man that visited baby Jesus? I wouldn’t have been able to see all that without Mulugeta. He helped me not only with tourism, but also when I was sick and needed medications. He brought me to a religious procession at 5am in the morning free of charge in order to appreciate more their culture and it was the procession of the Ark, where approximately 2000 people dressed in white robes with candles in their hands. They surrounded a replica of the Ark of the Covenant singing and praising the Lord. It was a deep act of dedication. If you’re interested in history and archaeology, this is the place. It’s a bit difficult to understand what you’re looking at —not much signage when I was there—so I recommend a local guide. Ours spoke perfect English, and is a serious history buff. He knows a crazy amount of both local and Italian history, which is very useful.

Man muss schon einen Guide engagieren, um die Architektur dieser Stelen zu verstehen. Es wird aber sehr gut erläutert (z.B. entspricht die Anzahl der Ebenen der Stele auch der Anzahl der Grabkammern darunter). Auf alle Fälle einen Besuch wert.

This is a relatively small site but very interesting. The product of the pre-christian Axumite empire these massive stone pillars were somehow erected and many are still standing. The underground tombs are worth seeing as is the small but informative nearby museum.

Most important and highly rich field in history with its many obelisks. The tallest was collapsed during its erection because of weak foundation. All made up from granite brought by elephants from nearby mountains about 5 km. Underground tombs is an architectural beauty. A must visit place while in Axum. Don’t forget to visit the archeological museum at the back and later to taste Buna. Avoid the sellers near the gate.

Ancient history of kings building bigger and better Obelisk shrines to themselves. The rock towers are impressive.
