I just participated in the Tavern Talks that depicted short stories with real people’s names from pre-revolution to the War of 1812. It was fun and the costumed actors were very good. The setting was an tavern in a very old local housed moved to the property for preservation.

It was really interesting to hear stories about people who used to live in Lewes centuries ago. Started at the Ryvves Holt house walked past the church cemetery to the Cannonball house; even got to go inside! And last, but not least walked along the beautifully manicured yards and houses to the campus of the Lewes Historic Society. There we learned some more about the old houses and visited a "haunted" house. Fascinating to hear about the paranormal activities and investigations.

Don't miss this little gem by the sea in Downtown Lewes. The Historical Society has moved to its new home at 101 Adams Street, the home of the old library (the library is now across the street) and has wonderful displays that are so informative and interesting. It tells the entire history of the town.
You will see the progression of the town from the time of the Native Americans, to when the Dutch and English moved in, how the State of Delaware was formed due to a treaty between the Dutch and English, from a religious community to a resort and then a permanent community that it is today.
There are displays also of the police, fire, postal services and schools on top of ancient artifacts from the Native American era right up to the founding of Beebe hospital by the namesake family.
The museum will capture your attention for about an hour after reading everything. It is the perfect rainy-day activity. It also has a nice gift shop.

My husband and I were visiting Lewes for the first time, and since we like learning about local history, we signed up for the evening "Legends Tour." Our guide was Scott, and his stories were wonderful!
We walked around the historic area of Lewes (not a long walk) on a pleasant October evening to visit a number of old buildings, and to go inside a few of them. Scott told us about the people who lived there and the "gossip" about what really happened to some of them. We heard about a number of ghostly happenings too!
This kind of local history doesn't always make it into the official history books, but really makes the former townspeople come alive in our minds!
We highly recommend this tour! We hope to return to Lewes and experience more of the Lewes Historical Society events.

My two daughters (aged 7 and 10) and I had a great time on the Lewes Legends Evening Walking Tour. The tour included going inside several of the Lewes Historical Society's buildings around town and hearing about sordid stories and hauntings. Definitely recommended for adults and kids who enjoy a mix of history and ghost stories.

We took the Legends tour, it was informative and a lot of fun. Scott L filled us in on the local legends and ghosts, along with the history of the town. Would recommend

The society has a few properties and it is worthwhile to visit all of them. We particularly enjoyed the Shipcarpenter Street Campus this time with its many historic buildings and nice area to stroll through and explore. The buildings were not open this time due to lingering late-COVID rules but still there was so much to see!

Lewes is a gem of a town! We loved the Maritime Tour offered by the Historical Society. It gave us a wonderful background to the area from it's inception to well beyond. The preserved buildings are priceless. The costumed guides in the garden of The Cannonball House really helped make history come alive. Great walking town with a wealth of history. A shout out to Marcos who helped facilitate our visit.

The museum was small but comprehensive and packed with fascinating information. The staff was knowledgeable and answered a number of questions. In particular, the docent at the Cannonball house provided a wealth of information and stayed well beyond the closing time to answer questions for us. He was in period dress (First Fridays in Lewes) and was so friendly and knowledgeable it made for a great afternoon. If you enjoy history I highly recommend.
