Having navigated our way along some small and twisty lanes we arrived. A information centre provides a lot of information about the remains of the Roman vills. Free sound boxes are available so you can find out more as you wander around this fascinating site
A covered ars has solid mesh walkways so you can see remains of roman mosaics, and rooms such as the dining area and areas were Romans washed, enjoyed hot steam and cold dips. Some foundations are visible.
Outside there is a museum with roman artefacts as well as further remains of a well and other rooms. Sometimes a guide is available to answer questions
Information on site challenges some of the preconceptions about Roman history, life style and how people lived in the Roman era

For anyone interested in Roman mosaics, excavations and villas, this is a must see. Well off the beaten track, and with limited parking, this hidden treasure is worth finding and enjoying. The free audio tour gives some added interest and enjoyment. Better to visit on a dry day as much of the site is in the open, and during term time there is likely to be a school trip in progress.

Monday 16 September 2024, My husband and I went to visit Chedworth Roman Villa, Under the care of the National Trust. We last visited here 2018, so no doubt many new changes have been made.
We arrived and parked our car in the car park and walked the short distance to Chedworth Roman Villa. Chedworth Roman Villa was discovered in 1864 when a gamekeeper, out ferreting for rabbits, found small stone cubes – loose tesserae – from one of the buried mosaics. The site was swiftly dug to reveal extensive walls, bath houses and fine mosaics from one of the most significant Roman villas in Britain.
The 19th century landowner Lord Eldon, maintained timber shelter buildings over the most delicate ruins, and had a small museum for artefacts. The estate was sold in the 1920’s and the Villa was brought for the nation through public subscription.
Chedworth Roman Villa was at its greatest in the fourth century, as a large and luxurious country house, with many domestic comforts such as under floor heating and two bath houses.
In 2011 the site underwent a major renovation with a brand new shelter building to protect its fragile remains, new museum displays and many more ways to learn about life during the ‘Golden Age’ of Roman Britain.
My husband and I wondered around this interesting building. Archaeologists were there doing some work on a mosaic floor that had been hidden under tarmac and concrete for years and they were working on restoring the mosaic floors hidden underneath.
My husband and I took the audio guide around the site, with various characters talking about what it was like to live and work for the owners of the villa. The owner of the villa talked about visiting guests and hosting a dinner party and how they spent time in the baths before dinner. The audio guide was so good and the actors so real that you could close your eyes and believe that you were actually there at the site in Roman Britain. I found inspiration whilst I was here and I wrote a poem called ‘Rituals of a New Day’
My husband and I also went round the museum with its exhibits of all the things found at the villa over the years. These included hair pins, stone tablets with various gods and religious items on them, bits of terracotta bowls and basins, stone pillars, bits of marble mosaic floors, coins and jewellery.
After wandering round for three hours My husband and I were in need of refreshment, so we went to the ‘Villa’ Tearoom, where my husband had a ginger beer and I had a fizzy orangeade. We left the museum at 4.00pm.

We Stumbled across Chedworth Villa and I’m so glad we did. The site is well worth a visit if just to see the magnificent original Roman mosaics. The guides are friendly and very knowledgeable about the site. The location is stunning a beautiful place to have a picnic and admire the countryside.

This Roman Villa exhibits the remains of quite an extensive property. It offer extensive mosaics but a large area is not exposed. An interesting site
Decent level of interpretation.
Cafe offers quite limited options and the pasties were not fresh-enough

Excellent place to learn about the Romans and how they lived. Superb mosaics and variety of artefacts on display. Very impressive displays. Being run by the National Trust, there is a shop and a cafe. Gets busy at times but there is an overflow car park not far away.
Well worth a visit.

What an amazing leftover from the past. The mosaics are on a different level to others I have seen in this country. There is enough to hold the interest of the family for a few hours especially with games dotted about for younger members.
There is a cafe offering a decent selection of "goodies" and the inevitable NT shop.
The villa is located in a beautiful part of the countryside.

An amazing National Trust site this, narrow roads to get there, so some care required. No designated children's play area, but a number of games were out on the lawns for play. We spent some time with the grandsons looking for the Roman Snails, found one under a wall tucked away as it was a sunny day. The Mosaic is quite outstanding.

How much time would you recommend allotting for a visit?

Thanks for your interest in joining us!
Our guided tours last from 1 hour plus an opportunity for questions with our friendly guides; you can of course explore the site free range if you prefer and the time will depend on how much you like reading!
If you're visiting with children on one of our event days we recommend at least half a day.
Do remember to allow extra time to travel to and from Chedworth as the roads nearby are narrow (and views very picturesque!). For more info on our events or guided tour times do give us a call or email at the time you're planning to visit as these vary. We hope to welcome you soon!

Does the cafe serve lunch (hot food, sandwiches etc.) or is it just a coffee and cake place?
كُتب بتاريخ 26 نوفمبر 2016
Undoubtedly it is much more than coffee and cakes - but these are very delicious!
My husband is a diebetic and my daughter vegetarian and they both were able to choose light meals that really appealed to them.

What is the best way to get to the Chedworth Roman Villa from the Cotswold Way walk?
كُتب بتاريخ 12 فبراير 2015
It's too far to walk from the Cotswold Way to Chedworth, as the Cotswold Way is further over to the West. If you haven't got a car and want to visit Chedworth specially, you could go by Taxi? Do check beforehand as to when Chedworth is open.
