The old port of Methana is naturally protected and today is mainly used for anchorage of recreational boats or yachts. Arriving with the car stretches in front of us with the waters to have a light blue color due to the sources.

We visited Methana as our hotel room looked out over the peninsula (so very nearly an island) and the intention was to go to the Pausanias Baths, but we never made it that far. We'll have to go back (hurrah!) to go there and to Vathi too.
Anyway, Methana. In May it was still opening up for the summer season, so was very quiet, we enjoyed breath-taking scenery as we drove on to the peninsula, the light, the colour and clarity of the water was just incredible.
We found a very pleasant cafe on the seafront to have our freddo cappuccinos, and watch the world go by.
Wandering down the new pier (the old one is now a marina at the closest end of town to the mainland, and is very lovely), we spoke to guests who were cruising round the islands on a large wooden yacht; we watched people being taught how to manoeuvre large yachts in and out of berths, and then the scheduled ferry came in, disgorged its passengers and picked up more before heading off across the bay to Galatas/Poros. The ferry came in at a terrific rate, then practically did the marine equivalent of a handbrake turn to gently come alongside the pier.
The blue white spa pool and its lido buildings at the entrance to the town appear to be abandoned, however you certainly get a whiff of sulphur as you pass by, yet this didn't spread across the sea front itself.
We wandered along the front, bought a few things in a gift shop, and then set off to drive up to the interior of the island. Perhaps we chose the wrong road, but it all got a bit TOO real, with single track roads, crumbling edges, no safety barriers, vertical drops, deranged Greek drivers trying to pass where there was barely room for one vehicle, let alone two. After a few too many sweat inducing moments, despite the car's AC, we called it a day. Next time, we'll take a different route, or walk from one of the upper villages.

About a kilometer before you reach Methana, you come across a platform on the side of the road that offers a wonderful view of the settlement of Methana and its port. The old port of Methana is beautiful and naturally protected, although the modern needs for larger ships led to the construction of a new port further to the right. The old port is now used as a marina and during the summer its movement is intense.
