We went on a three-day/two-night trip on Mount Mulanje and went to the top (Sapitwa). The first day, especially the first few hours were really tough: it was steep and warm. After reaching the plateau, things got better and the views were amazing. The huts in which we stayed in were basic, but good enough. Our great guide Nenani made sure that everything went smoothly and safely. He really knew the mountains well and he was very helpful the entire trip.

I highly recommend Gayson as the best tour guide for hiking Mount Mulanje for two nights and three days through Sapitwa Peak and Chambe Hut respectively, as well as for surrounding village and tea plantation tours. Gayson's extensive knowledge of the area, friendly demeanor, and commitment to safety made our experience truly exceptional. He guided us through challenging trails with ease, sharing fascinating insights about the mountain and its surroundings. The village and tea plantation tours were equally enlightening, providing a deep cultural experience (traditional foods, dances production of local beer and initiation ceremony). Gayson took my wife and I on a one day hike up to the plateau by Likbhula.
The views were incredible and if we'd had more time we would have done the three day hike across the rest cabins on top of of the massive.
Swimming in the waterfalls on the way down the mountain was a really magical experience.
Would thoroughly recommend Gayson who was very supportive and patient with us on this at times challenging hike.

So me and my girlfriend Nadia decided to climb the Mulanje Massif after a recommendation from a fellow traveller we bumped into. We tend to do things on the spur of the moment and we decided to do this without much thought into the fact we were not very established hikers and the guy who recommended it was firstly cycling from Cairo to Cape so obviously had stamina and also he stated it was the hardest peak he had scaled. Still, like I said, we didn't think about that.
Anyway, we were recommended a tour guide by local tour guide in Monkey Bay. Lewis Banda by name. He was an absolute godsend, we wouldn't have made it without him.

He helped us with our things and despite our slow pace was full of encouragement and didn't complain about the multitude of breaks we took. He just waited patiently and gave insight into the many peaks that we were surrounded by.
When we finally arrived at Chisepo hut, the last hut before the highest peak Sapitwa, he insisted we relax whilst he coulded up a delicious meal from the food we brought up the mountain.
Whilst he was the guide and with the knowledge, we essentially had full autonomy over the climb, how we went, when we went etc...
He wanted to charge us such a small fee that we ended up paying him around double as he was so very helpful. Cannot recommend him enough.

My friend and I spent 2 days trekking and one night hiking a part of the magnificent Mount Mulanje. It was an unforgettable experience, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful that I had in Malawi, all thanks to our guide Gayson . A person in my opinion perfect for this type of excursions. He helped us in everything, the organization was excellent as a true professional. We met him in the village of Mulanje where Gayson helped us with choosing food and snacks for our hike.
He chose the best trails for the hours of the day that is so hot here.
Person super informed on the Fauna and flora of the mountain, traditions and historical and cultural references. He complied perfectly with our gait pace requirements during the trek, and we stopped whenever we needed it.
It was all very pleasant. Gayson and his staff are prepared for every kind of request and need, so do not hesitate to ask, even to organize groups with more than 15 people. We slept overnight at the top of the mountain in a super cozy cottage and Wilson, a co-worker assisted us to cook dinner and the day after breakfast, he too was an amazing person.
Definitely, I recommend Gayson as the best guide for Mount Mulanje, sympathetic, empathetic, in harmony with nature.

Los días que pasé en la monte Mulanje y en el cercano pueblo de Likhubula fueron una de las mejores experiencias en los 2 meses que viajé por el sur de África. Llegué solo y sin haber planeado nada, pero nada más llegar a Likhubula tuve la enorme suerte de conocer a Pitman, un guía local. Me ayudó a encontrar un lugar asequible para quedarme y planificamos la caminata para el día siguiente. Aparte de que fue excelente como guía, pasé el tiempo estuve en el pueblo con él. Me mostró cómo vive la gente local y pasé algunos de los mejores días de mi viaje con él, su familia y sus amigos, comiendo y cenando en su casa. No puedo hacer otra cosa que recomendarlo.

PD: Un més después conocí a un Brasileño en Zambia. Le recomendé que contactase a Pitman e hiciese lo mismo que yo. Y por lo que me conto, so experiencia fue igual de buena que la mía.

We went hiking at Mount Mulanje Plateau for 3 days and it has been so beautiful. The views were stunning (check the pictures). And it is a great hiking experience.
We climb the plateau trough boma path and spent the first night in CCAP hut. The second day we hiked to France’s
Cottage and decended passing Dziwe la Nkhalamba Waterfalls (for a quick cold refreshing).
Take some cash with you as a tip for the lovely caretakers of the huts/cottages.
We were guided by Oliver Andrys.
He grew up below Mulanje Mountain. He has a lot to tell about the stories regarding the Mulanje plateau, the malawian society and the history of Malawi in general. He knows every peak, their names and stories behind by heart. He guided as in a very professional way.
He picked us up as we arrived by public transport and went with us to the supermarket to shop our food for the 3 days (we booked selfcatering). Oliver planned with us the itinerary and organized the transport from/to
our hotel. He was reliable and it was very easy to communicate with him.
As we got to know Oliver in these 3 days he is a very friendly, helpful and humble man.
We warmly recommend Oliver as a Guide.

Had an absolutely brilliant time climbing Mount Mulanje as part of our honey moon. Harry Naminga guided us and was a pleasure to spend time with. Really knowledgeable about the mountain, super funny and showed us some local Malawian spots when we got down. If you're looking to spend time up on the massif definitely give him a call.

Mount Mulanje is spectacular! A standalone massif with tea plantations pouring down the lower slopes. The views only get better and more dramatic the higher you climb. My partner and I hiked from Likhubula (having stayed at Hikers' Nest) up to Chisepo Hut on the Skyline trail on the first day, before summiting and heading to Chambe Hut on the second day. Both days included tough ascents, the first day made more challenging as I was carrying our shared pack. Feel free to hire a porter if you'd prefer! The views from the top were stunning, and with clear views we could see the plains all around dotted with little hills rising above the morning mist. The third day saw us return to Likhubula on the Chapaluka path via a quick swim in the (ice-cold) refreshing Dziwe la Nkhalamba Waterfalls. This made for an excellent and more circular route (rather than just there and back the same way) planned by our guide Oliver Andrys, who has a lot of experience on the mountain and unlike many other guides, his own website. Oliver also manages the Mulanje Mountain Hiking in Malawi Facebook page that brings together guides, porters, and hikers. Beyond the knowledgable guiding, he was excellent in helping organise our sleeping bags and food, communicating with the hut wardens if we needed anything (hot water, pots and pans, etc.), and sharing a few folk stories behind the mountain. Highly recommend for anyone planning a trip to Mulanje!

Hi everyone, Im planning to hike in mount mulanje for 2 days 1 night (not reaching the top) this will be my only long hike and I wonder if I should really carry my heavy hiking boots just for that part of the trip? are durable mountain hiking boots really necessary here? thank you!

Hi folks, I spent 3 months working in Blantyre 10 years ago and visited Mulanje on many weekends. Since then I have been looking for a good map of Mulanje but to no avail. Can anyone please tell me where that "Old map of Mulanje" seen in the photo can be found? Thank you, Paul

We are two hikers hoping to keep costs low by finding other hikers to join. Does anyone have suggestions on how to find and join other groups? Is there a hostel or cheap place to stay where hikers would pass through? Can we just wait at the park office? Also, we plan to hike next week (December 14, 2016). Is it too late to hike around (and/or summit)?

There's honestly not much cost involved - the fee for a tour guide is really reasonable, as are cost of staying at the huts (and I think it was per person). The whole atmosphere there is very loose and casual, and rates are highly negotiable.
When I went, there was a bar on the way up towards the base. I think that's a good bet to find other travelers.
Right now it's summer in Malawi, so if your question is regarding cold weather preventing you from summitting, I don't think it's a concern.

The best place to stay at the bottom of the mountain is Mulanje motel, and over the mountain is CCAP hut! Near to the peak and natural swimming pool.

Good day. We drove with our own car, but it's easy to rent a vehicle in Blantyre or Lilongwe. Make sure to obtain an international drivers' license in your own country (it's just a formality) before coming to Malawi. I totally recommend this rather than thinking of using a taxi.... For obvious reasons: not always on time, off beat driving skills etc... good to talk to legitimate guides in Blantyre or Lilongwe before going up the mountain
