Orongo is a ceremonial stone village and center of the famous Birdman competition- an annual competition that determined leadership on the Island. The houses here are made out of stone. It is important to read a little about the Birdman competition before visiting even though the guide may also explain it. Interesting place to visit.

Fascinating to learn about the Birdman competition and to see the ceremonial houses and look at the island of Motu Nui. Lots of really great information about the culture of Rapa Nui.

Located in the western corner of the island, Orongo is what's left of a small pyroclastic volcano cone crater. One side has a "bite" out of it where you imagine the sea will entually find its way in. The floor of the cater is filled with water, and the first sight of this as you crest the lip is quite stunning.

On this Island almost everything is a highlight. Same as Orongo, the village near the crater of the volcano Rano Kau. From here competitors went to the Motu Nui Island to take the eggs of the manutara & became "The Birdman" = high ranking and respect from the tribes. The last competition for Birdman was in 1878.

A wonderful place. The wind is very strong. In fact, if you had increased your speed, you are not allowed in. Definitely use windbreaker and trekking shoe. By the time we went, it's winter, so wearing something warm, it doesn't hurt.

Place where the participants of the bird man competition stayed looking for eggs from rare birds on the island in front. There is a small museum that tells the whole story in the visitor center. But the look is beautiful.

Archaeological site located in the volcano near Hanga Roa. It is located within the national park and can only be visited with ticket and guide. In the site, there are the ancient buildings of the last period of the Rapa Nui civilization, from where men left for the challenge of the bird man towards the small island on the coast. There are several places of interest in the region with many engravings on the stones.

If the iconic image of Rapa Nui is the image of a mo’ai, the most common event discussed is probably the Bird Man competition. After dissolution of the island’s stable society in the 1600’s into warring factions, the once revered mo’ai were toppled and the ahu ransacked. Out of this anarchy arose the Bird Man competition, an athletic contest consisting of each tribe selecting a member to climb down the face of a steep cliff, swim to an offshore islet, and wait for the first Sooty Tern to lay an egg. The first competitor back to the starting point was anointed the winner, ensuring that his tribe had special privileges until the following year.
I visited the site in the middle of my second day of touring the island. The area consists of two parts: an indoor static museum and an outdoor section. We spent maybe thirty minutes in the museum, which covers the Birdman competition, it’s termination in 1867 by Christian missionaries, and the events in the area that transpired afterwards. The outdoor section followed, starting with a small trail leading to an area overlooking three offshore motu: Kao Kao, Iti, and Nui. The path continued past several houses constructed out of basalt slabs, including one left purposely unrestored so we could see the interior. Next on the itinerary was Mata Ngara’u, a house perched overlooking the ocean/motu and the interior of the volcano. The trail continued back to the visitor center, past a decaying ahu and ending where we began.
In summary, this was easily one of the most memorable experiences I had on Rapa Nui and probably shares the title with Rano Raraku (see previous review). As a proud museum geek, it was the only site outside of the Rapa Nui Museum that contained a substantial amount of academic material. This included a bit of post-missionary history thrown in to boot, including the stories behind the “borrowing” of the mo’ai currently in the British Museum (Hoa Hakananai’a) and the current instability of some of the area due to erosion. Additionally, the views of the motu over the cliffs and of Mata Ngara’u and into Rano Kau were simply indelible. Last, the restored stone houses are unique to this area of the island and were a welcome juxtapose to the houses at Ahu Valhu.
If you have only a single day on the island, make this your first visit.

The stone village Orongo isn't the most interesting place on the island. It was restored, none of those stone houses was intact so authenticity of their design is questionable. The legends about the island with birds are fine. Great views.
