It was my first visit in 10 years.
It is easy to access because it is in the city of Sapporo, and it is not too large, so it is a good size to go around with seniors.
Various exhibits have changed and I don't think what it looked like 10 years ago (sweat)
A variety of animals left a lasting impression on me, especially the large elephant house and the relaxed movement of elephants indoors.

I am so fall in love with the zoo ambience and the way they organize everything. Even tough the cage seems kinda small for some of the animals such as the Hokkaido Bear (so gigantic), Siberian Tiger, Giraffe and Hipo, but we have to understand the zoo try to provide the best for their animals for the sake of our education.
The zoo seems has nothing at first because we only can see bunch of huge Hokkaido Owls and Eagles. Also some of rabbits and some cute animals sessions. It is like a small farm. But after you keep walking, you will be awed by all jurassic park ambience with the gigantic animals inside.
It was so much fun for family vacation and couples. The zoo is clean and relaxing especially if you really like the sensation of the city forest when you are walking to the zoo. The path is long and so natural with a shrine nearby. It is like you go back to the past as a voyager walking in the forest.

There’s something about caged animals that always - regardless of grandeur - bothers me about zoos. With that said, Sapporo Zoo exceeded expectations.
The grounds are much larger than expected and the numerous enclosures seem more spacious that other zoos of its size.
Admission was ¥800 for adults on the day of our visit; a fair price.

Asahiyama Zoo is famous for its behavioral exhibits, but this is a good place to visit while staying in Sapporo. Access is also good.

We enjoyed a family visit to this zoo, where everything was attractively laid out and well maintained. All the animals looked healthy and, generally speaking, well stimulated - constriction compared with the natural environment is always difficult to manage. Parking was easy, although might be more difficult at very busy times? The zoo is situated in a larger, very attractive park in a lovely part of Sapporo.

The zoo is very spacious and well maintained. It was very pleasant to stroll around here. You will need 2 hours to go around and see everything.
You will see some rare winter animals like the amur tiger, red panda, snow leopard, polar bear and wolf.
We enjoyed our visit here very much and highly recommend this place.

ちょっと時間が余ったので、地下鉄/タクシーを使ってやってきました。３時過ぎだったので、ゆっくり滞在できなかったのですが、思っていたより活動的な動物たちに出会えて面白かったです。動物園って、激混みでなければ大人でも十分に楽しめるんですね。それを改めて知ることができました。

公共交通機関を使いゴールデンウィーク期間に訪れたのですが、駐車場待ちの渋滞が凄かったです。車の状況から園内の混み具合にビビっていたのですが、園内はそうでもなく…。全く動物が見えないような状況ではありませんでした。ただ、トイレはとても混んでいたので、余裕を持って使った方が良さそうです。

Deplorable conditions for some of the animals make this one of the most depressing places I’ve ever seen. How it isn’t illegal to treat animals this way is unbelievable. The hippos are jammed into an indoor pen and separated from one another. One stood with his head in the corner, his mate lay on the other side of the barrier, completely despondent. Took us 10 minutes on foot from the subway station. The zoo was small but well maintained. We enjoyed walking around and seeing the animals encountering their living environments. The red panda, polar bear, giraffe were among our most favourable ones. Staff could speak the basic English.

Is there a locker in the zoo to put luggages? How big are the lockers?

I couldn't remember seeing luggage lockers, but they have a very good customer service center, to your right upon entry. I'm sure they will be hospitable enough to keep your luggage during your visit.
If you want to be 100% sure, try giving them a call at local number 011-621-1426 found on website.
If you are going by train, I wouldn't advise walking with your luggage, because it is a 15-20 minutes walk up a little slope. If you are travelling by car right to the entrance, then it will be alright.

Both zoos have a variety of animals, polar bears being the main attraction at Sapporo Zoo with a glass tunnel which visitors walk through and the bears, plus seals (not in the same tank) swim overhead. in Asahiyama Zoo the seals swim up, or down, glass tubes. However, Sapporo Zoo will be opening their African wildlife area soon, cannot ait to see what exhibits will be there and how they have catered for the animals needs. If you get the chance visit both zoos. If you purchase a yearly pass for one zoo (only a few yen more than a daily pass) you get a discount at the other zoo. As we were staying in Sapporo we purchased a yearly pass for Maruyama Zoo.

Asahikawa Zoo is small but it is famous for action exhibition.
Maruyama zoo is much larger.
There are many kinds of animals and many events are held.
It is also nice to go by subway from the center of Sapporo.

The way we went was to follow the signs from the train station up to the bus station (the signs are in English/have the universal bus symbol). It's a bit confusing because you're essentially navigating a mall, but there are maps around to help. Once you're at the bus station you'll see which stop to wait at for the bus that goes to the Zoo (when we were there they had a pretty obvious ad for the Zoo in partial English attached to the proper bus line's posted schedule). Go to the correct stop and wait for the right bus number. If you're not sure about the bus number just wait for the Zoo express, which is covered in Zoo advertising.
When we went I believe the fare each way was 210 yen per adult. Get on at the middle door, take a numbered ticket, and hold onto it. When you exit you'll insert this ticket into the machine next to the driver and drop in your fare. Be sure to have exact change.
Alternately, just take a taxi. It's not as expensive as you might think. We took one from the Zoo to the Sapporo Beer Museum (about 2 km farther than from the Station to the Zoo) and paid less than 3000 yen for three passengers in the middle of the day.

Not quiet sure either they provided or not. As far as I've known,Japanese facilities are quiet excellent here, even in Hokkaido area. Maruyama zoo has friendly facilities (toilets and elevator/walk-ways for wheelchair) , no need to worry for handicaps person want to pays a visit sometime.
