What an incredible experience! Alejandro, our guide, was wonderful through the whole day, educating us, encouraging us, and overall leading a fabulous adventure!
Do be prepared: The hike was quite a bit steeper and more intense than expected, but seeing as I did very little research before signing up for this, that’s a personal issue not one with the guide or company at all.

One of the highlights of my Ecuador trip was this tour! Not only was the group a fun bunch but our guide, Nathaly Durand, made the day feel authentic and special. Her positive energy kept us engaged and excited throughout the tour. I highly recommend, and I look forward to coming back to Ecuador to explore the places I didn't get a chance to visit this time!

My dad and I had the best time visiting Cotopaxi Nationalpark and the Quilotoa Loop. The view and the hiking was really diversified and totally worth the effort and we would recommend it to anyone visiting Ecuador. Luckily our tour guide Alejandro was really nice and had a huge knowledge not only on the history of Cotopaxi but also the indigenous people and their language. We had a lots of fun and such a great time together, these two days will hold a special place in our memory on our first trip to Ecuador!

The agency and guides were amazing! the activities were beautiful, fun and packed with laughs ! Very safe in this tour that is far away from the coast. We tried canyoning for the first time and it was thrilling!

My wife and I had a personalized tour with our exceptional CarpeDM guide, Alejandro. We picked a visit to Mitad del Mundo (Intiñan equator museum & site); a private hummingbird sanctuary just outside Mindo, and a chocolate processing facility (Yumbo) tour in Mindo. In between the hummingbird and chocolate tours we ate lunch at a small local restaurant suggested by Alejandro.
All three tours were fun and educational. My wife and I enjoyed the different aspects of each.

Not only did we visit the Historic District of Quito which included so much more than we had anticipated but we also traveled outside of Quito to visit the Equator, and the most interesting to me, was Pululahua Crater, a dormant volcano, where a village has been built and continues to be inhabited. Nataly, our guide was amazing. She was so knowledgeable and interesting as well as having a great sense humor!
I would highly recommend this tour to anyone going to Quito!

My wife and I took this tour less than 24 hours after arriving from sea level Florida, probably not the wisest decision as my wife had a slight headache since checking into our Quito hotel the evening before, probably from the change in altitude.
It turned out we had a “private” tour simply because no one else had booked that day. We appreciated that CarpeDM ran the tour anyway; we’ve had experiences with previous tours operators in other countries that would cancel or try to have us reschedule.
We met our guide, Alejandro, at the CarpeDM location in Quito where he outfitted us with bicycles, then packed them into his vehicle. His English was excellent and he had an enjoyable personality.
As expected the drive up to Cotopaxi National Park was scenic. The exhibits inside near the entrance were very interesting and informative regarding the volcanos, flora and fauna in this region of Ecuador.
After arriving at the parking lot for the hike up to “Refugio José Rivas” we put on our warmer clothing and started up, given the option of either the shorter but steeper route, or the longer, windier but less steep zigzag path. We chose the latter. Alejandro gave us hiking poles to use.
Shortly after starting my wife realized that her headache was worse so she wisely decided to return to Alejandro’s vehicle to await our return.
The hike was strenuous for me. My Strava app said it took 52 minutes to climb 1.3 miles, rising almost 700 feet, although I believe it was closer to 1000 feet. Alejandro patiently kept behind me, encouraging me to rest and catch my breath frequently (actual overall elapsed time was 1hr 6m) and monitor my heart rate. It was chilly, windy with occasional light rain but doable. Being 65 years old and 15 lbs overweight were balanced out by being very active cardio-wise at home. If I had problems with the altitude it would have been a different story. As they say, “Your results may vary.”
Not that I could have, the 3000+ foot extra ascent from José Rivas to the summit is currently forbidden due to the possibility of noxious gases being released from the cone. Never mind you need crampons and ice pick axes.
After resting at the refuge station we headed down the steeper, shorter (1.0 mile) in about 33 minutes.
Next we descended by his vehicle on the unpaved park road and stopped for a short (4 mile) downhill ride on the bicycle (mountain bike with front suspension and wide tires). Easy as it was almost all downhill with minimal pedaling. Alejandro kept pace behind me until we came to our stopping point where he packed up the bikes.
On the way back to Quito we stopped for a nice lunch (included) at a small restaurant in Latacunga. After eating our real food we fed carrots to the resident llamas in their backyard.
The drive back to Quito was uneventful, returning just as the afternoon rush hour was commencing.
Overall we strongly recommend the tour, keeping in mind your fitness and ability to cope with the high altitude.

Dear Midnite Camel,
Our sincere apologies for the delay. As a private tour with Cityline and Equator the cost would be $90 US. This would include private transport & guide.
Anything else, please don't hesitate to ask😊
Hello. My wife and I would like to take local Ecuador tours, a day or two at a time, for birding. We don't need to see all 1200 species or visit the islands. We would like to stay in a local hotel. We are concerned about transportation and safety. Can CarpeDM make those arrangements for us? Thanks.

Most certainly. They did a wonderful day tour of Quilotoa for us and we were very pleased. I am certain they can accommodate a day trip to Mindo for birding. Their hostel is also a GREAT option. Very reasonable price, decent location just a block or two from the heard of Centro Historico. Check them out.

I would recommend staying in Cotopaxi for AT LEAST one night. That's the amount of time I stayed but I wish I had stayed longer. It's quite far from Quito (assuming that's where you're located), and Cotopaxi National Park is huge with numerous amazing activities. If you get a chance, I'd suggest horseback riding!!

Hi, my 15 year old daughter and I will be staying for a couple of days in Quito before we join a tour we already booked to the Galapagos. We would love to take a day trip to the Cloud Forest or something similar that includes hiking and seeing the natural landscape and wildlife of the area. This is our first time to Quito. Is there a particular tour you offer that you would recommend? Also, can pickup from our hotel be arranged? Thank you for any information you can provide.

What was the day trip to Cotopaxi from Quito like? What did it entail: how much walking, hiking, climbing? Do you hike to the actual rim of the Volcano? How long does the walk/hike normally take? Is the Volcano snowcapped this time of year (September)?? Thank you very much.
PS: How much approximately does the day trip cost in USD?
