We toured with a travel agent, a student from Indonesia, to the Fayum desert from Cairo.
We booked an off-road package, which included a 4x4, a driver, sandboarding & lunch by the lake. The full price for the 4 of us, minus the entrance fees to Wadi El Rayyan & Wadi El Hitan, is almost USD350.
Ahmad, our driver can find his way just by looking at the rock formations & dunes! Though at 1st it was irritating because he smokes & blasts the music too loud. But he entertained us, driving up & down the dunes, showing his driving skills. His Toyota Fortuner is the best car to use in the desert. Comfortable & not so bumpy.
We paid by cash using EGP once we arrived at the checkpoints/ticketing counters.
Arriving at Valley of the Whales was an awesome experience! The surroundings were like a movie scene. The toilets are free & clean. Lots of walking around the desert to look for the fossils. The museum itself gave us a lot of information. We were so impressed to see all the fossils kept in the museum.
Never to be missed when you travel to Egypt.

Wadi Al Hitan is known for its whale fossils, perfectly preserved in sediments. It must be said that 40 million years ago, the present desert was the bottom of the sea... Shells are numerous as shark teeth.... Wadi Al Hitan was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. Wadi Al Hitan, or Whale Valley, is a paleontological site of global importance. Not to be missed...

An exciting visit in a truly unique landscape. A very beautiful desert area with rocky conformations mixed with sand dunes. The itinerary is very well organized and you can admire the clearly visible fossil remains of Paleolithic whales. We had the magical opportunity to be the only visitors having decided to go in the afternoon. The road to get there is beautiful, a strip of asphalt-like tarmac that crosses 49 km of desert

We ( a party of five) booked a two-day trip to Fayoum with Travitell Egypt, at the capable hands of Mr. Ashraf Kamal Sadek.
We were picked up from our home in Obur (a north-eastern suburb of Cairo) and driven by Sameh, a quiet and reliable driver, in his small van to our hotel in Tunis Village, Fayoum (Hotel Pyramids), which was clean, comfortable and reasonably priced.
After checking in and a small snack, we were picked by another driver (Mukhtar) in his sturdy, air-conditioned Toyota Landcruiser all-wheel SUV for a wonderful afternoon trip to the pottery shops in Tunis Village, followed by a desert safari trip that took us to the waterfalls of Wadi El Rayan, connecting the First, Second, and Third Lakes. We visited the Round Mountain (Gabel El Mudawar), and even hiked up to one of its peaks. We then did some sand boarding down the slopes of impressive dunes, and ended the trip at the banks of the Magic Lake where we admired the sun set enjoying tea prepared by Mukhtar together with fresh fruits. We then had a wonderful dinner of grilled lamb and chicken, oriental rice, and French fries. After some star gazing, we returned to our hotel around 10:30pm.
Next morning, we were picked up at the hotel at 8:30 am for a morning trip dedicated to the "Valley of the Whales" (Wadi El Hitan), a fascinating UNESCO -designated World Herritage Site about 75 minutes drive from our hotel, deep in the Western Desert. We spent about two hours there, admiring the amazing pre-historic whale fossils and surrounding desert landscape. The dome-shaped museum on the site is a jewel. Visitors watch an introductory 15-minute film that explains the importance of the site, and sets the scene for the ensuing circular tour of impressive original exhibits.
Mukhtar brought us back safely to the hotel by about 1:15 pm. After a quick freshening-up, we vacated our rooms. Sameh was already waiting for us with his van for a three-hour safe drive back to Cairo/Obur.
All in all, we had a wonderful, compact, and very enjoyable trip with all arrangements exceeding our expectations and falling in place like clock-work. Throughout our trip Ashraf was contacting us to ensure that everything was in order.

We saw this area from our tour bus as were coming and going from the Giza Plateau and the tour of the Great Pyramids. Impressive desert feature.

A place that is very interesting with the remains of whales that are several million years old, just laying in the desert.

This was actually better than I anticipated. We had to change vehicles to a 4x4 to get there and you drive through the open expanses of the wide open desert for a while, but it was beautiful out there. If you've already been in Cairo, just the quietness of the desert is amazing. Views are breathtaking and the whale bones are so well preserved it's crazy. Be warned, we were there in March and it was already getting quite hot. There's an informative but small museum there and a little restaurant serving Bedouin style food. Note that even the tomatoes are spicy! Ha! You could spend all day here wandering around the park and looking at different whale bones but I recommend around 1-2 hours or so.

Getting there was the real adventure. We took 4X4's for what seemed like forever to reach this place. Any other time, it would have gotten old, but how often are you seemingly out in the middle of the Sahara desert?!? Once we got there, the little museum was nice and the fossils outside were fun to walk to. A very unique place and experience.

A unique place that combines outdoor fossils, a museum, a beautiful landscape, and hints of the Egyptian bedouin culture.

The valley of the whales reveals a whole unknown side the Egypt. A cost to the history centre and a walk through, is a great way to experience yet another face of Egypt.

Hi,we are hoping to camp here as a family in April for one night to try and see Fennec Fox. Is it possible to just book a 4WD and driver in tunis village the day before and do it ourselves? We can't afford the £600 advertised in the tours online!!

Hello, I am a single traveller. I am hoping to find a tour (hopefully group tour) to go camping here on 2nd of April from Cairo.
I contacted a few people and I heard at the present time the security status in Fayoum regarding camping is restricted for foreigners, is that true?
Are there anyone who went camping here as a single traveller?
Would you recommend any tour company or guide?
Thank you.

Hello, I checked with the company I used and unfortunately, they are not arranging any tours in that date, I don't know about single foreigner travellers, but we had foreigners among the group and there where no problems at all.
I hope you have a good trip and if I could manage to get any more information, I will let you know.
Cheers,

Me and some of my friends are planning to go there, camping for one night, in early May.
Is it a suitable time as we are coming there during early Summer?
Or is the desert windy enough that you can tolerate the hot weather?

Help guys
To these people who have been there recently, is it a safe place to spend the night stargazing?
Thank you
