Part of our cruise excursion. Like most sites with ruined, they are interesting to see. We stopped here as we toured Ephesus. I would recommend visiting here and it was worth the time.

The Basilica of Saint John was an interesting site to see. It was worth visiting this site. I wish we had more time to look around more precisely.

This is a lovely site to visit ... and one of the few Christian sites in the area. It's worth couping this with a visit to The Virgin Mary House nearby as the two sites are linked.
The site is not so large and it is easy to find your way around

Le site est relativement bien conservé. Il est intéressant à visiter à cause de son histoire.
Ce qui est spécial c’est le genre de petite piscine pour baptiser les gens par immersion dans l’eau.

Interesting site with lovely views. Access to the castle but be careful as lots of loose rocks. Toilets available and parking nearby.

This is where it is believed that evangelist Saint John spent his final years. It is also believed that a small chapel was constructed over his grave in the 4th Century. This is something you shouldn’t miss

I recently found myself drawn into its sacred embrace, where tales of antiquity and echoes of devotion permeate the very air. In my latest blog, I unveil the captivating allure of the Basilica of Saint John, delving deep into its historical significance while embracing the sense of wonder that lies within.
As I approached the Basilica, I was captivated by its imposing presence. Each stone seemed to hold secrets of a bygone era, and I couldn't help but imagine the footfalls of pilgrims who traversed this sacred ground centuries ago. The Basilica's significance as the traditional burial site of St. John the Apostle, a key figure in early Christianity, lent an air of hallowed reverence to the entire experience.
Inside, the hushed ambience encouraged quiet contemplation. Rays of sunlight streamed through ancient windows, casting a kaleidoscope of colours upon the time-worn masonry. It was as though the Basilica whispered forgotten stories of faith and devotion, drawing me further into its embrace.
Guided by an expert who skillfully intertwined history and spirituality, I traversed the halls with ornate columns and arches. Each nook and sacred altar bore testament to the enduring devotion of pilgrims who sought solace within these sacred walls.
The grandeur of the Basilica's architecture left me in awe. The vastness of its dome, which seemed to reach for the heavens, evoked a sense of connection to the divine. As I climbed to the terrace, the panorama that unfolded before me was breathtaking, revealing a sweeping view of the surrounding landscape that added a sense of transcendence to the experience.
But the Basilica of St John is more than a mere historical site.
It's a place of contemplation and spiritual reflection. In my blog, I endeavour to capture the essence of this sacred sanctuary, blending historical narratives with personal thoughts. As you explore its pages, you'll be transported to a realm where time stands still, where the sacred and the human spirit converge...

Located only a short walk from the city centre, ruins are fairly well maintained but not a lot of information around ruins so would recommend joining a tour group to explain the history behind the site.
Said to be the burial place of St John. Enjoyed it but didn’t love it, you only need about an hour to see everything.

You can enter this site at any time which is a real bonus for early rises. No fee required, which is very kind of the local community given all of the historical information provided.

We took a guide for both sites. It takes the Aegean pass. Its a historical site with roman ruins as well as an amazing Fortress right next to it. It has beautiful views of the city.

Hi, I will stop by the island by the cruise. Do I have enough time to visit st. John tomb and house of Mary during this stop?

Not enough information. Which island are you stopping at, and for how long will you be able to go ashore? If you're stopping in at Samos, it's about half an hour by road from Kusadasi on the Turkish mainland to the Basilica, and another 15 minutes or so to the Mary house. But you have to get to Kusadasi first. If you have a day free, it'll still be a tight schedule - and you'll still miss seeing Ephesus itself.

hi
ive got a bit muddled whether it was the basilica or cathedral of st john that i was writing about- so
my review appears under both, and other peoples photos dont help me know which one it is
is one or both of them on the hill near selcuk, perhaps the church that has become a cistern in the castle is one of them, and the big ruins is the other, and what is the name of the ruined church in the grounds of ephasis near the exit

We stayed in Selcuk and went for our early morning walk after arriving around mid-night. We were thrilled to find the ruins of the "church" of St John and even more thrilled to stand in the baptism place. I know there are differences in Basilicas and Cathedrals so not really sure what its classified as. Regarding Mary's House - we actually had a local guy who was a friend of a friend living in Turkey, and he took us to Mary's House.....a very modest 2 room dwelling that had obviously been rebuilt. There was a Mass being said outside in English and it seemed very surreal with the armed Turkish soldiers all around. This "house" though was set amongst hills and seemed to be quite a way from any other housing areas. i was taken with this as it certainly was remote - and very very peaceful! I think there seems to be some confusion about Mary's Church - and Mary's house here!

Are there age restrictions in the Dorms?
Can I pay by credit card?
Thank you.

Cualquier duda consultame
