This historic little green mosque stands on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River near the Phra Pokklao Bridge. A Persian merchant called Sheikh Ahmed immigrated to Siam in the 17th century and established his business in Ayutthaya. He laid the foundations of the House of Bunnag which soon gained favour of the royal family. After the fall of Ayutthaya, when the capital was shifted to Thonburi, the royal patronage continued because the family converted to Buddhism and continued serving the kingdom. In the 1800s, another descendent of the family named Tat Bunnag became first a page, then a regent and subsequently the owner of the land next to the river. A group of Muslim Indian traders landed in Thailand, established connections with Tat and were given the land and the warehouse to make a mosque. It seemed like the Buddhist Bunnag family still had a soft corner for the Muslims. Ali Bai Nana, one of the traders became an indispensable translator for the Bunnag business and established a roaring business of his own. The Nana Empire became so huge that two streets and a BTS station are named after it in Bangkok. The Goowatin Islam is still a fully operational mosque. I really liked the fact that it is shaped like a warehouse with a beautiful minaret in front of it.
