‪My children learned a lot about Gorrie in their elementary school, so we made a special stop to see this sweet (small) museum. It's a one room museum and half of it is dedicated to Florida National Parks. The other half is about John B Gorrie. It's $2 per person. Spent about 15-20 minutes in there.‬

‪I wanted to see this museum since Dr Gorrie is one of the two people honored in the National Capitol statue from the State of Florida. He essentially invented air conditioning and ice making in the 1840's as we know it but the ice industry kept him from commercializing it. As a mechanical engineer I understood the concept and models present but honestly I think a working model or way to demonstrate the principle with a water cooled hand operated tire pump would help people understand how it worked. The rest of the museum talks about the state park system. Admission is only $2 and the ranger their was very knowledgeable and friendly.‬

‪The Florida ranger that lead our tour, Steve, was an amazing tour guy. He gave us a lot of insightful information about the past life of Mr. John Gorrie. From the church, to Mr. gory’s invention, to his gravesite, Steve gave us a lot of information to share with my students when I return to school after spring break. Thoroughly enjoyed our tour.‬

‪This is a small but informative museum that houses information about Dr. Gorrie's invention, as well as the history of Florida State Parks. You can see Dr. Gorrie's gravesite and also a historical marker.

We're glad we stopped. The city is also quaint and enjoyable.‬

‪There are not many museums in Apalachicola so if you are here, this should be on the list. You will reap rewards for the nominal entrance fee. Although described as a one room museum, the displays pack a lot of historical and social content into that room. The information about the origins of air conditioning were enlightening. We took time to remember Mr. Gorrie who helped make the Florida climate bearable for all of us. The details on the Florida Park service raised issues we had never considered (What is Park Service training camp like? What were segregation conditions in Florida parks?). The park ranger was excellent, spending time answering our questions and fanning the flames of our interest. She also proved a wealth of information about the area. A great way to spend an hour and perhaps a bit.‬

‪The Gorrie Museum was interesting mostly because of our great park ranger guide. She took her time to explain the history of Dr. Gorrie in great detail. She really took her time to give us all the history.‬

‪More people should know the story of John Gorrie, a physician who invented the first mechanical refrigeration system to make ice to provide comfort to his patients suffering from Yellow Fever. You can learn the story in this small museum and see a 3/4 scale replica of his ice machine. Gorrie also had filed a patent on an air conditioning system long before Willis Carrier. Unfortunately, the patent office never received it so Carrier got credit for air conditioning. It's worth the 30 minutes or so that the museum requires and the ranger who manages it is quite enthusiastic and knowledgeable. It was closed when we dropped by on this trip, but I've been in the past.‬

‪We could not enter the museum due to Covid restrictions but one can view the memorials across the street and learn something about John Gorrie an inventor of refrigeration, Doctor, and a contributing member of the state. It would be worth a return visit once it can open up. Once again any State facility should announce the restrictions on their website to save the traveler time.‬

‪Informed by the helpful Tripadvisor reviews, we stopped off on our way up the coast to visit this very small museum, for about an hour. We were not disappointed. We were welcomed by Ranger Jeremy Roundtree, who is a credit to the Florida State Parks Service. This enthusiastic, very knowledgeable and charming young man presents the two main stories this museum has to tell, that of John Gorrie and his ice making machine and the history of the Florida State Parks Service. John Gorrie steals the show, with the kind of story we should all know about and celebrate humanity for. And he’s the godfather of air conditioning, I mean, who knew? Ranger Roundtree captured the ingenuity, selflessness and humility of Gorrie brilliantly, and even got us to understand how the ice making machine actually worked. The ranger can also tell you why the first female rangers wore jumpsuits and chunky state park service earrings. We learned quite a bit about Florida State Parks, and this part of the coast more generally, including an explanation of the landscape we were about to drive through on US98, still showing the damage wrought by 2018’s Hurricane Michael. If you get the chance to go to this museum, you will have a fantastic experience.‬
