‪Great experience! Hiking from Crested Butte to Aspen is easier than Aspen to CB. The trail from CB to the West Maroon Pass is only 4.5 miles and is a gradual climb with few rocks on the trail. From Aspen to WMP it's 6.5 miles with the first 5 miles being up/down, up/down with plenty of rocks on the trail and sometimes all rocks. The weather was great, the wild flowers were in full bloom on both sides near the top and the views were spectacular with not a whole lot of people. Definitely worth it!‬

‪Loved it, but it would be nice if the trails were better marked. Not heavily traveled so you won’t cross anyone until the end or at the beginning. Early spring is great but the water really washes out the trails, and avalanche debris makes it hard to find your way. May not be able to do the water crossings. Be sure to prepare for an over night for just Incase I did it straight through but I also had a sat phone to let everyone know I was running late. Be prepared for all weather in one day. I got it all, snow, rain wind.

‪We invited friends to trade cars and start this hike at opposite ends. We started at 6:00 AM (and the parking lot was nearly full) at the Maroon Bells Parking lot. They started on the Crested Butte side a bit later, around 9:00 AM. We met at the top of the pass and traded car keys. It was 7 miles of hiking for us to the pass, with a gradual uphill the entire way, the last mile being a steeper grade and about 4 miles of hiking for them with a gradual grade until the last 1/2 mile. I was shocked at the number of people doing the same hike this time (just three years ago we saw about 6 people when we made the hike - this year it was more like 60 people!). Everyone was friendly and respectful of the environment and each other. 11.5 miles total with over 3000' of elevation total. Lots of places to stop and have lunch and take in the views. Pack it in and pack it ALL out. It took us a leisure 7 hours. Fun day.‬

‪What an incredible hike! The views were spectacular and the Maroon Bells did not disappoint. We started early in Aspen and took our time, and finished up mid afternoon (we hiked Aspen to Crested Butte). We spend our lives rushing and racing through the days, so stopping to take pictures, catch our breath (we're midwesterners!) or grabbing a snack was how we took on the day. Some reviews mentioned we'd be alone once past Crater Lake, but that was not the case. There were people all over the trails and at the summit. I'm afraid of heights and had absolutely no problem with this hike. Even up at the top - where the trail narrowed, I was okay. It definitely caused me to stay focused on the top and the mountainside of the trail, but it was easily done. The wildflowers on the CB side were amazing. Trail is easy to follow for the most part and at no point did we ever wonder if somehow we messed up and were lost. At the end of the hike, someone we met on the trail asked if this was on our bucket list. It wasn't...but it should have been, so we added it and checked it off in one day. You won't regret doing this hike!‬

‪The trail continues up to West Maroon Pass past Crater Lake. The trail is not too steep. It is about 6 miles from Maroon Lake to the pass. Great views on the way. ‬

‪This 2 day hike was the hardest physical experience I have ever done. From the East Maroon Trailhead to the parking lot near Gothic is 19 + miles, with 12 water crossings (2 needing water shoes and time for feeling to return to your feet due to cold water), at least 3 wide scree fields and 11,800 top elevation. Hiking poles are a must. The return over West Maroon was 14 1/2 miles, 8 water crossings (no water shoes needed). West Maroon had better tread, but it reached 12, 500 feet. This is an epic 2 day hike. Take plenty water and a filter just in case. Start early both days.‬

‪On May 1, 2017, I talked (by phone) to Jesse of Dolly’s and scheduled a pick up from Purple Mountain B&B for 7 am on July 25, 2017 and another from Aspen Highlands around 4:30 pm. Jesse said that Dolly’s could take my wife and me to the East Fork/West Maroon Trailhead for a hike we were planning to Aspen. Unbeknown to me, on Sunday, July 9th of all times, there was an avalanche that blocked the Gothic Road at least 2 miles away from the trailhead. We never received any notice of this problem from Jesse or anyone else at Dolly’s. I discovered this problem when I made a pre-trip check on July 20, 2017, on the website for Travel Crested Butte. I then sent an email to Jesse asking if the avalanche still blocked the road to the trailhead and received this cryptic reply: “We still can’t get to trailhead. Its adding about 2 miles to the hike. Jesse” I responded in effect that the trail was already plenty long at between 10 and 11 miles and even though we are hearty 70-year olds, two more miles over snow on the road was not an option. I asked him in an email if it looked like the road would be open anytime from the 25th to the 27th. After I saw a new report on Travel Crested Butte saying it would not be, I cancelled the pick up and requested a refund of my deposit of $160. Jesse never responded to either of these emails. After receiving no response I filed a credit card charge dispute with my credit card company. The next day I received an e-mail from Jesse stating that he issued a credit less $16.00 (10%). I sent an email in response stating “I would think that when you cannot provide the service we ordered, i.e., get us to the trailhead and the trail is closed, there would be no cancellation fee.” His response was that the trail was not closed and he had been taking people up (evidently to 2 plus miles away from the trailhead) to hike for three weeks. Personally, that goes against my environmental ethics - hiking on a fragile muddy trail, but that’s just me, and my wife. We volunteer for City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks and have seen damage done by hikers to muddy trails-people generally hike around the mud. Anyway, back to topic. I then asked if he was now saying that he could get us to the trailhead rather than within what he considered striking distance. I also sent him a link to the site stating it was closed. Unsurprisingly, I got no response. In fairness to Dolly’s their website states that there would be a 10% cancellation fee for cancellations of Crested Butte-Aspen pick ups made within 2 weeks. However, that assumes that Dolly’s could deliver the service promised, not some “well-we-can-get-you-almost-there service”. Now granted, $16 isn’t much, but evidently it is to Dolly’s. I wonder when Jesse intended to tell us that he really could not get us to the trailhead – in the van on the way? ‬

‪Wildflowers, terrain, scenery and views are awesome. Spotted white tail ptarmigan with chicks on the aspen side ascent to the saddle. Wildflowers were almost at peak the third week of July. Creeks were still full since snowfall was 2 1/2 times the usual for the previous winter.‬

‪The crowds of people stop at Crater Lake. If you have it in you, continue on the West Maroon Trail. You will see some people here and there but most people turn around at Crater Lake. The West Maroon Trail takes you higher into the Maroon Bell Mountains. The trail from Crater Lake to where we stopped is not very steep and well worth it. We saw pikas chirp at us, a lot of marmots hanging out on boulders and we heard there are mountain goats up there but we did not see any. We stopped where you have to take off your shoes to get across a river. In total we did about 8 miles. Great hike!‬

‪Walking along the West Maroon Creek Road offers some of the most spectacular and accessible views in the Aspen area. There are walks for all age groups and all levels of physical capacity. Sally sez you should try to get to Crater Lake, if you have the time and the energy - it will take about two hours roundtrip - but it is worth it. Public bus will take you to the Aspen Highlands Village where you get the bus to the Maroon Lake. Along the way, the driver/naturalist will give you an introduction to the geology of the region. Once you get to the visitor's center at Maroon Lake you get to choose from a leisurely walk around the lake - about an hour and level, at 9,580' - or several more ambitious hikes. We chose to walk to Crater Lake, which is about 1 and 1/2 miles and up 1,000'. Make sure you take plenty of water. The views are wonderful along the way. The Maroon Bells, two peaks at 14,000', are glorious, and, as their name suggests, a color that contrasts with the more traditional slate grey of Pyramid Peak, also at 14,000. As we huffed and puffed up to Crystal Lake we were passed by young hikers who were going on to one or another of the passes that provide a challenge for all but the youngest and most hardy.‬
