‪I wasn't sure what to expect, but booked a Sunday 1 pm tour, paid $5 online and took my chances. I don't usually enjoy guided tours, but was delighted by Hoff's very personal walk around the cemetery. He shared history, personal reflections and interesting perspectives as we walked under the snowing cherry trees. It was a chance to reflect on life's seasons and a very unexpected oasis in the city. I hlghly recommend a visit. And bring a picnic.‬

‪Review was conducted by a docent who read off a script, not by the expert. I expected a more generalized tour where I could ask questions and see the famous burials and monuments. I was a tourist.‬

‪If, like me, you enjoy moping around cemeteries wherever you travel, this is one of the greats. Civil war soldiers, members of Congress, a Native American chief, and lots of random Americans all mixed in together. Wonderful place to spend a nice morning; dog people will also enjoy meeting friendly new puppers and their friendly humans.‬

‪Historic Congressional Cemetery, established in 1807, offers visitors a chance to walk through history, both local and national. I recently toured the site with a local history group and was reminded again of this hidden gem - even many locals are not aware of this treasure, overshadowed by major historic sites in the area such as Arlington Cemetery.

There are notables here you'll know - John Philip Sousa (visit on his birthday - November 6 - when the Marine Band gives a concert and there's even birthday cake!); Mathew Brady, photographer from the Civil War era; J. Edgar Hoover; and Washington DC "Mayor for Life" Marion Barry. Here too rest colorful figures from Washington's past - Belva Lockwood, nominated for the presidency in 1884, and newswoman Anne Royall, whose approach to journalism earned her enemies and a trial as "a common scold." Davey Herold, a co-conspirator in the Lincoln assassination, lies here - but you'll have to find his family plot (his grave is unmarked). The Arsenal Monument honors the memory of 21 young women, mostly immigrants, who were killed in an explosion in 1864 (they had been making ammunition for the Union cause). Abraham Lincoln himself led the procession to the cemetery.

Street parking is available and the site is within a short walk (10 minutes or so) of the Potomac Avenue metro station (turn left after exiting the station and proceed down Potomac Avenue) At the intersection of Potomac, E Street and 18th, you'll see the cemetery off to your right.

The cemetery does offer docent-led walking tours, some introductory and others, specialized (check the site's website for tours times as well as other special events). If your visit doesn't coincide with a scheduled tour, pick up one of the brochures on the various walks available. Brief sketches are given on the notables you'll visit along with a map to assist in finding them.

This is a great place to walk (and earn your "steps.") - interesting monuments and landscapes. Some beautiful colors in fall and spring awakenings. Some years ago the place was in disrepair, earning the label as one of the nation's most endangered historic sites. You would never know it now - the "clean-up' has been remarkable. Locals jog through its trails and walk their dogs (the dog walking corps played an important role in the cemetery's restoration). Stop by the gatehouse - the folks there will share the cemetery's story and there is also a small book/gift shop. Whether you come for the history or the exercise (or both), Congressional is well worth the visit.‬

‪We visited the Congressional Cemetery on our first day in Washington. It’s one of those places that I guess should be on your tick list. Being a cemetery obviously there’s not a great deal to see there apart from the stones or if you’re up on your American Congressional history it may be of interest. Still, interesting and worth a visit. ‬

‪The congressional Cemetery was established in 1808 and is now managed by The Association for the Preservation of Historic Congressional Cemetery. It is located near the bank of the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers with great view of the trees and the hill. It was listed as National Register of Historic Places. Prominent names of people associated with Washington D.C. and Civil War were put to rest here. Walking around you can find some names that you might recognize in the present era of Washington D.C.‬

‪We’ve been meaning to come for years. Well worth it! Adjacent street parking is easy, and the immediate neighborhood has improved tremendously in recent years. The cemetery itself fell into great disrepair a few decades back, but has rebounded with the love and care of many volunteers and contributors. The grounds are beautiful - amazing trees and other landscaping. We were lucky with a gorgeous Autumn day; Spring must be amazing. And best of all - a walk through American history: revolutionary war veterans, civil war figures, participants in the war of 1812, a fascinating LGBT section, and much more. In addition to the main attractions (Eldridge Gerry, signer of the Declaration of Independence; John Phillip Sousa; J. Edgar Hoover - and his reported lover buried nearby; etc) there are even a few odd ones, including the unmarked grave of David Herold, one the Lincoln assassination co-conspirators who was hung at what is now Ft McNair in Southwest DC. The cemetery remains active, with remaining burial sites open to the public, so please be respectful!‬

‪We visited this graveyard during a twilight tour for Halloween (cost: $25/adult). It was not spooky, but there were instead six actors impersonating some of the people buried in the cemetery. This group included a reluctant cartographer, a feminist sculptor, and the owner of a popular brothel (near Capitol Hill!). Really informative and entertaining.

The cemetery is dog friendly and it organizes several tours over the year. There are also LGBT tours centered around Maltlovich's tomb, a Vietnam War veteran who was discharged for being gay and became the first gay man on the cover of Time Magazine.‬
