A great area to hike round probably a little busy in Castleton and finding a park spot was hard, but we liked of the heated track and found some lovely quiet ares.

Compared to some of the higher, longer and craggier roads in the U.K. this pass doesn’t have the wow factor.
It is however a very pleasant drive and as we entered the pass heading towards Castleton, the view of the main hill, with a powdering of snow, had the look of a large, green blanket that hadn’t been smoothed out properly.
It was rather lovely.

Absolutely amazing place. Picturesque views. Unfortunately, we couldn't spend much time in the place and had to pass through in the car. Definitely worth visiting if you are in the area. I wish there were car parking spaces on the sides of the road so that travellers could stop for a few minutes to enjoy the views.

We walked from Blue John Cavern through the field then pass the road and walked up on the south part of the pass. The path is narrow and was very windy up there. Then we continued to the end of cliffs and went down on really steap path. There is a rope to hold it but too short and we had to hold to the fence. Not a trail for everyone, some people walked back. Can be even more difficult in a rainy weather. Next we walk to Castleton and then back to the Winnats pass on the path on the right side of the road and finished at same cavern. There is free parking.

High Green ridges hug this small road that goes past speedwell caves and mam tor. Outstanding views and beauty. Castleton is closeby.

I go across Winnat's Pass whenever I go towards the Upper Derwent Valley and sometimes when I go towards Sheffield on the rare occasion. It is such a stunning little area to drive (or even walk/cycle) through in the north of the Peak District and it forms the western gateway to the Hope Valley & Castleton. Although it is a small area, Winnat's Pass is still so beautiful and stunning, consisting of a single-lane road through a narrow limestone gorge and the road always gives me the impression I'm going through a mini-mountain valley, especially when I go eastwards towards Castleton. And there are stunning cliffs, ridges and limestone outcrops surrounding the road as you go across it that if you are driving (given that most of the area is otherwise gently rolling, it can be unexpected for people who have never encountered the Pass), you have to take care not to get too distracted by the beautiful scenery.

This is a great place for a walk, whether you'd prefer to head up the hill on the north side of the pass, or stick to the bottom of the pass itself. The pass is a channel through a fossilised reef, and the limestone rises on either side in towers and ridges.
The road itself tends to be busy with traffic, so a quiet weekday off would be the most peaceful time to visit.
There are interesting fossils that are easy to spot in the rocks on the path on the northern side.
The scrambling and ridge climbing here are out of this world - exposure as good as some of the classic Grade 1 Lake District Edges (e.g Sharp Edge or Striding Edge), but more technically difficult. Several different styles of rock climbing nearby, and ice climbing in season.

Supposed to be famous but we never heard it before until certain motoring magazine mentioned. Well worth driving narrow roads to get there.

Hi Alan
I have seen many beautiful pictures of this pass but as yet not found out exactly where the route starts and finishes. We are going upto the peaks this weekend and would love to drive this route, would also like to walk alone it if that is possible?
Thank you inanticipation for your reply
Dave
