Friendly and welcoming volunteers. Our volunteer had excellent knowledge of the Mill and made an interesting venue even more enjoyable. Great consideration was taken of one visitor's limited mobility. Thank you.

A little site but with a big history. Fascinating to find out how important mills were and what a place they held in society. Stainsby is a fully working water mill that produces top grade ‘real’ wholemeal flour.
We had an enjoyable and informative tour led by “Mick the Miller” who’s very knowledgeable. It’s a lovely, friendly site so don’t miss it on the way to its big sister - Hardwick Hall.

Great tour by NT volunteers (Mick the Miller), really informative and lovely tour of the mill and its operation. Best thing we’ve done all holiday. Not expensive at all, but definitely worth every penny. Would pay more and will be returning to see it again!

We visited the mill on a "return visit" to the Hardwick estate. Like many NT venues the mill is only open on certain days and it is occasionally necessary to book in advance.
There is no car park for the venue and parking is along the lane and grass verges.
It is an unusual water mill, in that it it is fed from a static source rather than a flowing stream or river. It draws water from a pond on the Hardwick estate.
There are excellent guides who give most informative tours of the mill and its workings.
Unfortunately, the mill was not working on our visit as it is awaiting the supply of important parts to the mechanisms. It is not known how long it will be before the mill will be back in working order, but we we will be keeping watch in order to arrange another visit, when it is.
We would certainly recommend a trip to this venue whether the mill is working or not.
An interesting and informative visit to a working water mill, which actually produces flour for sale.

We go to Hardwick all the time and drive past Stainsby Mill as it has limited opening. Today was the day we approached and saw it was open!! We stopped and headed on in and lucky for us it we were party to a guided tour.
The only thing that was disappointing is that I didn’t get the tour guides name because he was excellent!! I love being a NT member as I love the spaces and architecture but often the tours are a bit dull for me. This one was fascinating. He knew and loved the place, I totally fell in love with it and loved his enthusiasm. It’s not currently a storming mill as they’re waiting for a new baring to be fitted but in a couple of months we’re going to back and see it in all it’s glory!
You can call the mill on the day you plan to visit to see if it’s open/working so if you’re coming a long way, do that first! Don’t come all the way out and moan when it’s closed and then leave a bad review!!

On the way to nearby Hardwick Hall we stopped off here. Not the biggest NT property but good to see the level of conservation and it's a working mill.
We bought some flour and look forward to seeing what kind of bread it makes.
Friendly volunteers on hand. Amazing to see how little water is required to power the water wheel.

My wife and I are National Trust members currently and visit here fairly regularly and always enjoy the experience.
There is always plenty to do. The hall is nice and the gardens are beautiful in spring and summer.
We always try to visit at Christmas as the decorations are usually very good and well worth visiting for. The grounds of the property are also good with some great walks to explore.

Stainsby Mill, stable yard and outer sheds are interesting hidden extras all part of the original 'working' estate at Hardwick Hall.
Water is fed to the mill from the Miller's and Stainsby ponds and if you are lucky enough you can witness a working demonstration.
The machinery here was rebuilt in1850 and it still produces flour today.
After visiting the Hall itself, its a downhill stroll to the Mill along the meandering path/roadway.

Around 5.80 an adult & 2.80 a child I think.. it’s free to all National Trust members which is such a good deal to join I’ve saved so much money this year
