‪During our trip to italy, we chose to dedicate a lot of time to sicily, and its incredible beauties, historical and natural.
Stromboli is one of the most beautiful experiences you can live, we stayed in Ginosa, it is not easy to describe the beauty of a starry sky, while at the same time listening to the volcano.‬

‪Stromboli is an active volcano, Stromboli in the Aeolian islands. Stromboli is nicknamed as 'the lighthouse of the Mediterranean,' the boat trip around the volcano is quite spectacular, with the display of active lava. The Aeolian Islands are connected to Sicily; Stromboli is Italy's treasure.‬

‪Fantastic to experience in the dark. Good guide. A little steep to walk the last piece in the dark. we were a small group o also got the opportunity to rent good shoes if you did not have it with you on the trip.‬

‪The island of Stromboli is the northernmost and closest to the Calabrian coast of the entire archipelago; it consists essentially of the cone of its volcano, so seen from outside it appears with the classic pyramidal shape of volcanoes. Its peak reaches 926 meters (the second highest in the archipelago) but it must be considered that its base is located on the seabed at a depth perhaps greater than 2000 meters, so the total elevation approaches that of Etna. The volcano originated between 150,000 and 200,000 years ago (Strombolicchio also dates back to this period) but its original activity has now become extinct, while the current one (Stromboli is in fact a perpetually active volcano) began about 40,000 years ago with a crater that opened at a lower altitude on the northwestern side, characterized by three different eruptive vents that pour their products into that sector called the Sciara di Fuoco, which descends to the sea. The activity of Stromboli is typical and is characterized by cyclical explosions of low intensity that are repeated regularly every 15/20 minutes; occasionally there may be periods of lava flows or more violent explosive phenomena. During the phases of increased activity it is not possible to make excursions from land and sometimes the approach from the sea to the Sciara di Fuoco is also prevented. In normal conditions normally the boats, preferably at sunset, approach the side of the Sciara di Fuoco and wait to allow tourists to see the recurring explosions, which sometimes last very few seconds and therefore not easy to capture in a photograph (not counting the distance, so the jet of fire is really very little thing). When conditions permit it would be preferable to hike from land (with the aim of arriving near the Sciara di Fuoco towards sunset, then descending, now in full darkness, with headlamps) but for some years these hikes can no longer climb above 400 meters, thus losing much of their appeal (they become normal nature walks, without being able to approach the Sciara del Fuoco).
In any case, the island already fascinates from afar, for its shape and perennial cloud (which is often a real cloud and not the smoke of the volcano), but up close it is even more suggestive, with the contrast between the steep and barren reddish slope of the Sciara del Fuoco, and the green slope of the northern sector, topped by a gray-brown tip absolutely devoid of vegetation; and then its dark sandy and pebble beaches, always dominated by Iddu (him, the volcano).‬

‪Beautiful excursion made with the ship. The view is really nice pity that even waiting 10 minutes at sea we could not see the volcano erupt. Really very nice to look at.‬

‪Majestic and fearsome 🌋. From a distance its characteristic shape attracts attention, closely inspires fear ☄️. The constant huffing 🌫 makes it clear that the giant never sleeps. Perennial background while visiting the island 🚶🏻‍♂️, it is a constant presence that creates unique scenarios.‬

‪Beautiful volcanic island, we also found ourselves with the eruption in progress. Very relaxing, no cars pass, only bees or electric baggy dunes or mopeds and bicycles.
Wide choice of accommodation: hotels, b&b, houses and mti restaurants. I really liked it ‬

‪It’s a great small island with great choose of restaurants and spectacular stargazing opportunities and accessible volcano eruption viewing.

We went on a footpath towards observatory and found that it was sufficient to see great show. We wanted to go an a trek but our timings didn’t work out.

We also took a boat trip with Pasquale that took you to the village other side that has only 40 residents fot you to enjoy and then see the eruptions from the see.

Be prepared to walk up and down hill or take a cart. We walked it all and it was fine.

We went to the spiaggia terrazze di eolo beach just after the ficogrande beach which is more popular. We didn’t like the main one so went on and glad we did! The Spiaggia Terrazze Di Eolo beach was just amazing with beach access to restaurant with most amazing views! Would highly recommend.

It was all in all great authentic experience, really nice and very very quiet (late May). We wish we could go on a trek but glad we ventured out on foot ourselves. It’s marked well enough.

It was striking though how much this community is reliant on tourism. The remote village on the other side Ginostra (40 residents) had only one restaurant left open out of three and only served aperitivo (cheeses, olives and meet platter like snack with drink before main meal). Sane in the main village / lots of places shut. Sad really.. you can see it’s slowly fading away. I would hate seeing this to become hotel chain owned place as it is truly authentic at the moment and must be visited for the Vulcans and stargazing if not anything else. If you can, please visit and support as this community is still holding up as independent from commercial giants.‬

‪We took a tour through the Magmatrek agency (opposite the church) with Manuel, a local guide, who gave us a lot of background information about the volcano and the island itself.
We were lucky at the viewpoint and saw several impressive eruptions.
On the way back we saw two more great eruptions from further down.
I can only recommend this guided tour for €25.
Thanks Manuel!!‬
