Beach to put in the first places of an itinerary in Lipari. It is located near the former pumice quarries and thanks to this position the main feature is crystal clear and very clean water. This is especially noticeable during boat trips or near Lido White beach. In any case that whole portion of the beach is really beautiful and Recommendation a stop

The northeastern tip of the island of Lipari consists of a mountain (Mount Pilate) made entirely of pumice; here this rock has been extracted since the Neolithic, although a modern and organized cultivation can be talked about since the thirteenth century; but since 2007 everything has ceased (and certainly not because the raw material is finished). The quarries (both open-air and tunnel) were located in several places but the main one was in Porticello, where you can still see, in addition to the white mountain dug, the underlying countless buildings of the quarry, service and treatment of the extracted material, together with the pier for the boarding of pumice. We are a short distance from the hamlet of Canneto (a hamlet created precisely to accommodate quarrymen, given the proximity to the places of extraction) and you can get there either by your own means or by bus to Acquacalda. Obviously you can not access inside the area of the abandoned buildings of the quarry, but much of the beach that is practically in front of it, is accessible. In the northern part of this beach (which takes the name of Porticello beach) there is also a small bathing establishment (once there was one, Havana Beach, also in the southern sector, housed, I think, inside one of the buildings of the quarry, but now it has all disappeared, there is nothing left if not the sign). In any case, the beach is mostly stony and stony, especially in the south, where it is very narrow (I do not know if it has always been like this or if the sea ate it). Even the naturalistic aspect leaves much to be desired with the abandoned facilities and the mountain dug behind, as well as in front of the rusty and ruined wharf. Naturalistic aspect that improves to the north, beyond the present lido: here in fact instead of pumice there is the lava cliff, partially covered by vegetation, which arrives directly on the beach, indeed some lava blocks are right on the shoreline; it is a brecciated lava that often has the glassy appearance, of a pre-obsidian phase (obsidian that in fact is not uncommon to find on the beach). The water is transparent because the bottom is stony. Once you came here (but the speech is extended to all the beaches that are located between Canneto and Acquacalda) for the bright turquoise color of the water, because of the presence of pumice; today, however, it is not as it used to be and to find this intense color you generally have to go further offshore (in fact, in front of the former pumice extraction plants, boats that make the rounds of the islands routinely stop for a bathing stop). To conclude, it is not one of the best beaches on the island, but for those who have never been there it is a curiosity to come here if only to see up close the large facilities (now abandoned and rugged) and the dug white mountain.

Bad experience.
The bottom is no longer white, at least close to shore, because pumice has slowly gone away. The sea is beautiful but like all over the island. The big problem is that beach is full of rusty iron!!!!
It could be a suggestive place if it gets reclaimed. Absolutely not recommended if you have children.

Cave di Pomice or Porticello beach was not very pleasant. We took the bus there and walked down to find nothing of the white beach created by the pomice that was there a few years ago. Just grey pebbles and rocks. The water was fine but the whole experience was a waste of time and we had to run back up the steep hill to get the infrequent bus on time. The backdrop is an industrial wasteland of the old pomice mine which was interesting as my Nonno worked there but it’s not the most attractive backdrop. Lipari is not known for its beaches but give this one a miss.

Unfortunately, the eco-monster kills the sight... Probably the currents are very strong almost always and the sea, although clear and full of jellyfish, is impassable for us who have children.

I had been here many years ago and it was wonderful, now the pumice dune is no longer there, only the crumbling and very sad buildings of the quarry remain. The seabed is still a little white, but the water is milky.

On our bus trip, we did pass these white pumice mine locations and were told they are no longer functioning as mining enterprises. But they are quite an eye-opener, being so bright and at-odds with the general landscape of the area. So, what is pumice?
More so, it should be asked, what is it used for? Pumice is a volcanic product and historical eruptions have covered the area. Thus, were created the pumice deposits! Pumice is used for tanning hides, in building, as a coating, and as an abrasive. And then there are the health issues.
A nasty condition called "liparitiosis" describes the disease caused by inhaling pumice powder on Lipari. And the winds do blow.
Just as well there are no excursions to the pumice fields and mines. Our lives are short enough as it is.

hi, was thinking of spending 3 days 3 nights in lipari as our base and seeing stromboli by cruise at night and vulcano as a day trip but is there more things to see on lipari to amuse ourselves the rest of the time. or should we go to vulcano for day trip, arrive lipari stay overnight, see stromboli at night and spend one day on lipari and head back to sicilily and spend more time on big island?

Hello!
We just came from Taormina and I would spend majority of your time here! The Aeolian islands are nice but nothing compared to Australian beaches. I would do two nights/days in Lipari. It’s an absolute must to hire a boat and see the island from this perspective. If it wasn’t for the boat trip I don’t know that I would think a lot of Lipari!
Good luck :)

Costo 2,30 € circa a/r. Attenzione !

Grazie a chi risponderà
