‪The construction of the Cathedral dates back to the 12th century, but it was then the subject of numerous restoration, demolition and reconstruction works in the following centuries.
Located a few tens of meters from Piazza Mazzini, it suffers from the lack of a space in front that fully enhances its spectacular gabled façade: it is in fact polychrome, asymmetrical and framed by two non-aligned bell towers.
Once past the entrance, you enter a sort of atrium (narthex), in Arabesque style and which appears as a separate body, almost detached from the church, which you enter by going down a few steps.
The interior is divided into five naves, supported by tall two-tone columns, with the vaults largely frescoed.
Of note: the chapel dedicated to S. Evasio, in which his remains rest, the pipe organ and, above all, the ancient wooden crucifix that hangs from the ceiling.
One of the most interesting visits in the city.‬

‪Let's return to highlight the Cathedral (which is worth a visit even on its own) for an exhibition open until the end of the year for the 550th anniversary of the Diocese. An exhibition dedicated to the bishops of Casale curated by the Cultural Heritage Office (Bruna Curato and Chiara Mainini) an in-depth study on the figure of the episcopate and the history of some bishops called over the centuries to lead the Diocese.
Works of art, ancient books and documents to guide the visitor and the faithful to discover important personalities and events for the diocesan territory: from the collection of rare books of Monsignor Girolamo Caravadossi, to the autobiographical stories of Giuseppe Angrisani during the terrible years of the second conflict worldwide, from the pastoral of bishop Germano Zaccheo to the music composed for the entrance of Luigi Nazari of Calabiana.
For the occasion, the section of fabrics exhibited inside the Cathedral Treasury (bell cell) was also rearranged; here are refined vestments not usually exhibited to the public such as the humeral veil in silk embroidered with gold thread commissioned by Monsignor Pietro Secondo Radicati in the first decades of the eighteenth century. You can admire, and the photos attest to this, the (eighteenth-century) chasuble of the episcopal consecration of Msgr. Vittorio Moietta (born in Brusasco, diocese of Casale, on 7 April 1913, died in Nicastro in 1963 after a year as bishop); of Msgr. Moietta's beatification cause is underway in Lamezia Terme.
It can be visited free of charge every Saturday and Sunday from 3pm to 6pm until the end of the year.‬

‪A few meters from the square you arrive at the oldest monument in Casale Monferrato. the Cathedral, dedicated to Sant'Evasio, patron saint of the city. It is a masterpiece of Lombard Romanesque architecture, built in the 13th century. by King Liutprand. The gabled facade and its bell towers are particular, one on the right and one on the left, they seem to frame it. The narthex in front of the entrance is evocative and grandiose with its arches, women's galleries, mullioned windows and three-lancet windows. Inside, under the vaults painted in starry blue, there are five narrow naves supported by pillars, along which the marble altars follow one another, shaded by imposing columns with two-tone bands. In the first right nave there is the marble group depicting the Magdalene in ecstasy. In the right transept there is the baroque chapel of Sant'Evasio built in 1793, which houses the relics of the Saint, preserved in a silver urn. Finally, the large and precious wooden Crucifix, covered in silver leaf hanging from the presbytery. It was a really interesting visit!‬

‪The atrium is a sight to behold, it's a shame that you can't go up except once a month but the spectacular interior is not indicated‬

‪...and this is one of them!
The Cathedral of Casale Monferrato is the oldest monument in the city and is dedicated to Sant'Evasio, patron saint of the city.
It is difficult to explain this beautiful and unusual work in words: the entrance is unique in Italy and has some references to Armenian and Islamic architecture, but the interior, with its blue ceilings, is also definitely jaw-dropping.
So many beautiful things to share....😉‬

‪I was amazed, immediately entering the narthex, not always usual in our churches, to then see the polychrome columns most typical in central Italy and ending with the blue vaults with golden stars. The effect is magnificent. Definitely worth a visit if you are in town‬

‪Probably the city's main attraction, it dates back to 1107.
Preceded by a valuable entrance (narthex) in sandstone and brick, the latter represents a rarity for Italian churches as it is more typical of Islamic architecture.
Interior not up to expectations‬

‪The Casale Cathedral is worth a visit for its grandeur (five naves) and the importance of the work. The atrium, or narthex, is particular, with Arab influences. The crucifix is beautiful, the mosaics are precious. Once a month we visit the attics (unless they host exhibitions). Luckily for tourists, it is always open.
He is continually interested in restoration work. Once the conservative work on the entire exterior overlooking the small square was completed, on Monday a scaffolding tower was raised to rise towards the roof, still on the facade. We will proceed with the maintenance, restoration and structural rehabilitation of the atrium roof (or narthex, designed by architect Rolfo). The previous and last interventions had been aimed at the conservative and aesthetic restoration of all the surfaces made up of exposed brick and sandstone used on the basis of the desired decorative effect, but also of mosaic and ceramic elements such as the roundels which evoked the passage of pilgrims..
The Cathedral was consecrated on 7 January 1107 by Pope Pasquale II. The parish priest of the Cathedral is the bishop's vicar, Monsignor. Desiree.‬
