‪A nice little niche of a village with stores to look through. I would highly recommend the bookstore and art gallery to check out‬

‪Barnes Village is one of my favourite spots and a perfect example of English life just over the Hammersmith Bridge! Best way to get there if travelling via public transport would be tube to Hammersmith followed by the number 9 bus across the bridge down Castelnau and around onto Barnes Church Road and beyond! Mentioned in the Domesday Book Barnes has charming pubs great shops and a movie theatre in what once was the famed Olympic Studios. Just wonderful!‬

‪I lived in Barnes from 1988, until 1999, and then moved just around the corner, to Mortlake, then to Sheen, where I lived until 2005. I had known Barnes and visited since 1980, so I would consider myself a former local.

This is NOT the Barnes I grew up knowing and loving. This used to be a healthy mix of real South West Londoners and those, like myself, who had spent time in other parts of London, and considered Barnes to be home. It was earthy, yet it had some style, too. The Police station and the Police car and van depot, and the Flying Squad offices (near the station) and Carmichael Court, which used to be Police housing, played an important part of the village identity, so, too, the railway, and its cottages, and the local Watney's brewery. There were council houses, on specific roads, and there were the wealthy, of course, but it was a genuine mix, and it had a working life.

This has all gone, and having just returned, I see a twee, pricey, fake village, where every 'locals' pub has been ruined, and turned into some sort of cross between a coffee shop, wine bar, crèche, and designer lager bar! Youngs and Fullers breweries always had a stranglehold on South West London, and since they own all but one of the pubs in Barnes, they have conned a monopoly in pricing and it is not just over-priced, but so selectively class inspired, and I am talking financial class and new social class! The Sunn Inn used to be an independent pub, now owned by Mitchell & Butler, and it, too, is in the super-league, where a pint is £5.75 and a G 'n' T is £9.70! Even the old favourite, the, then, workers' pub, The Coach And Horses, has been trendified!

Property prices, now, have become exclusive, and I suspect that is because the real Londoners have been pushed out, by the city boys, and their stay at home wives, who will plan their day around the morning trip to the nursery, then a jog along the Thames, followed by lunch, with other ladies that do lunch. I find it shocking at just how Barnes has been taken over, and turned into sage-green, shutters and Armani joggers, and all things unequal and sadly destructive!

If you honestly think THIS is a real village, it is not: it once was, but THEY have taken it all, and done what they usually do, which is turn it into something it never was, and pretend it really is!‬

‪and I should know as my job took me all over London. As a Kiwi, I was fortunate to have lived in Barnes in the 80s and came back with a friend. It is a must see village but if you can get there when there is an event on, even better. The best part is it is so easy to get there = by a bus hop from Hammersmith or train from Waterloo (either to Barnes or Barnes Bridge closer). Wander around the pond and the back lanes like the lane next to Barnes Bridge railway. The village is part of the River Thames so do walk along it, may be over the bridge and include Mortlake. There are several divisions (if you like) of the village. Also through the Elms to the river walk there. Plenty of cafes & pubs. This is a liveable village not a tourist set up. So you will stand out to locals who are security conscious. This is a place to get a way from it all - right in London - and so close and easy to get to. You can do it in half a day yes - but even when I lived there I didn't see enough of it all. Yes I would go back.‬

‪Hard to realise so near the big city, easy walking along river path, we walked from Hammersmith bridge to Barnes bridge station, went into the Watermans pub for lunch, great selection of local beers, cider on draught, had roast beef sandwich with fresh green salad and fries, less than a tenner with stout(local brew). No 'factory'beer here.Olympic studios in the high street just past the pond, sixties music studios is now cafe and cinema, with original photographs of rock stars.Easy to reach on southwestern trains, good day out.‬

‪Barnes village and High Street is a lovely family orientated shopping and cafe culture place that is a pleasure to stroll along or stop for shopping or food. Really nice‬

‪Lovely little spot - the shops are the sort that you wander round and look in. Cute duck pond! And the Thames is close enough nearby too.‬

‪I like Barnes Village but it is, alas, modern rather than quaint - the High Street closest to the Thames has three nail shops, two hair shops, three charity shops and perhaps half a dozen estate agents - you would not find most of these in 'ye quainte olde village' and they are fairly superfluous if you are a bald bloke with your own house.
There are a few 'artisan' i.e. not big chain shops: grocery, cheese, jewellery, Swedish, plus M&S, Sainsburys, and a chemist (not alchemist), with a car wash plus a garden furniture shop up a side street and not much more, plus two pubs - three if you walk up to the pond.
The atmosphere is calm and friendly with a couple of places for coffee and cakes. The pond, its wildlife and surrounding park land is the centre piece and in the Summer there is a Fair. On Saturdays, also opposite the pond is a Farmer's Market - not large in numbers of stalls but large in the variety of goods for sale.Being circular, there are a lot of 'opposites' to the pond!
The walks alongside the Thames are excellent in most weathers plus there are walks along the reservoir with the Wetlands also nearby.
To clarify; this review is mainly about the High Street in Barnes Village as to extend it to incorporate the Church Road and other surrounding areas would make this review longer than the riverside walk to Hammersmith.‬

‪Barnes village has two main shopping streets and many pubs and is a very upmarket area within easy reach of central London, around 6 miles away. The River Thames hugs the village and more in to the village is a nice duck pond. Parking on the high streets is possible. ‬

‪A sweet afternoon's walk in a quieter English village. A nice high street of local and known brands, green with ducks and cosy cafes. A deliberate trip for Rick Stein's Barnes restaurant, though can imagine the area is calm and relaxing for a short stay.‬
