The section we walked near Amarillo was a disappointment. I had always wanted to see Route 66 and had a vision of cute shops and restaurants. I’m certain other areas of Route 66 must be much more interesting. However, we only saw one open shop, which actually was a cute bookstore next door to Golden Light Cafe. Unfortunately, it was the only place we could find to eat and the service was really slow. We did walk along the route for awhile, but the section looked run down and mostly deserted.

Literally did a Thelma & Louise with my best friend! We flew to NYC then flew to San Fran picked up our car and drove all the way down the Californian Coast, Malibu was lush, down to San Diego, Arizona, Vegas, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia Beach, Washington DC then over the Brooklyn Bridge and back to NYC! It was THE BEST thing I’ve ever done in my whole life! We saw the Grand Canyon from all sides, drove to the top of Yosemite National, did a hot air balloon ride at Sunrise over the Sanoran Dessert! So many amazing memories! Word of advice always ALWAYS check the reviews on the places you stay, even if your only staying over for a few hours to sleep. Because two brit female backpackers can look quite vulnerable, we only nearly died twice which I thought was quite good going to say we had never even done or planned a road trip before! Tip: great app called Roadtrippers - takes you to places off the beaten track......wow what memories....then Covid hit the year after! So lucky, but yeah if you ever get the chance to do anything like that Just Do It, forget the what ifs and what not, just do it, you will never ever regret it 😊 ❤️
P.s I didn't go June 2021 that was as far back as it would let me go we were there June 2018 to September 2018

Where to begin? Do your research. Know the history. Allow two weeks minimum, maybe three. Don’t overplan and take it day to day … spring or fall is best. Do all 2,246 miles. Without any doubt: Buy and follow the EZ66 Guide for every detail, every inch of the road. It’s your Bible. The blue 66 phone app is also recommended. Historic Route 66 and Route 66 Trip Planning Facebook groups also recommended. It’s a trip of a lifetime.

I was only on parts of this famous highway through Arizona, but I would love to travel more of it. There are long stretches of nothing so be sure you have plenty of gas in your tank. Just so much history and so much to see along the way. And when you do stop in a town, the people are so friendly!

After so many kilometers and hours on the road, we had a mad desire to reach the Santa Monica Pier, an ideal destination for many travellers, the end of a journey that is worth living at least once in a lifetime. Recommended to go with friends.

Driving the entire 66 off the freeway is definitely a great experience. It takes some planning to get to see all the countless little things along the Route but that planning is worth it. While it might be hard to guess how much time you need from day to day, I'd say 14 days if you're on the faster end with lots of driving as well. My favorite parts where the beginning to Missouri and the Kansas to Tucumacari part. There are so many small and neat things along the route which makes it a truly unique experience. It's not gonna be a cheap experience and may consider doing another big trip instead of "just driving a road" but it time and means are here, definitely worth doing it. Great trip with so many things to see!

The portion of Rt. 66 that goes from Kingman to Oatman Arizona covers a couple types of ground.
Starting in Kingman you can take the old Rt 66 that travels on the south side and parallel to I-40 until it crosses over to the north side of the freeway. Or that I-40 west from Kingman for just a few miles and exit at the Rt. 66 exit. It’s all flat ground for several miles with really only one highlight to see, a rest stop (see photos). Eventually it starts climbing uphill and becomes a totally different type of road to drive on. Pay attention to the warning signs, you’ll be glad you did.
Those last few winding miles into Oatman makes it hard to believe that at one time this was a major East/West Highway followed by the truckers calling goods into and out of California. And it reminds me of this a little poem written about another winding Highway.
“ winding in and winding out it leaves my mind in serious doubt as to whether the man who designed this route was going to hell or coming out”
Get your kicks on Route 66

We had to stop by portions of this on the way to the Grand Canyon. It was pretty awesome to see some of the older parts. The kids absolutely loved it, as they are Cars fans. Good memory for us all!

Hello
We are looking to book Route 66 trip for next year for our honeymoon (we found a fab deal) for 15 days with a rental car starting from LA and finishing in Chicago visiting Vegas, Grand Canyon etc on the way. I am wondering what sort of spending money will we need for the 2 weeks? I know it’s subjective and down to what sort of things and activities we will want to do etc and fuel for the way, but is there a minimum anyone would suggest as this is one of the things which makes us nervous about booking it whether we would have too little or too much spending money. Any help would massively be appreciated!!

We are interested in taking a Route 66 trip from LA to New Mexico and back in October/November 2020. Assuming Covid-19 is still an issue, would this trip be worth it? Are there plenty of outdoor things to see, socially distant stops to make etc? Or would this be a wasted trip with being unable to visit indoor experiences (I'm immunocompromised so being extra safe). Thanks!
I'm looking to book a trip like this but does anyone have any suggestions on the best way? Would it be better to book through a travel agency or is it possible to plan it all yourself? Is one way car hire easy enough to find? Any help appreciated!

I purchased a couple travel books and did it myself. I would suggest doing it yourself. I treated the trip like a treasure hunt.
Hi All. We are looking to drive Route 66 next year as this is my husbands bucket list holiday. However i am really nervous and apprehensive. I have a real fear of snakes, scorpions and spiders. I worry that these will be in hotels as I read a review from a couple that woke up with a scorpion in their bed. Also worry about driving on isolated roads on tornado alley. This is really questioning my ability to do this holiday. Anyone been and any can offer any advise. Thanks

Hi,
We are driving from Las Vegas to Williams and going to go via Route 66 for most of the way we can.
I wondered if somebody could help answering a question? When I look at advice and then look at a map, the advice suggests Route 66 from kingsman to Segliman and mostly i40 the rest of the way, but on the map Route 66 seems to continue past Segliman which suggests we could stay on it for longer?
Any advice appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Fiona
As you are coming out of Seligman there is a turning on your right sign posted Crookton. If you look closely you will notice on the top of this sign the Route 66 brown sign. Take this turn as it will take you onto Historic Route 66 which is a single track road in both directions. This joins the interstate just before Ashfork.
I find google maps to be very helpful when I plan my Route 66 trips.
Happy Driving

Has anyone had a positive experience with a one way rental from Chicago to LA? Not sure what I’m missing, however, there such a huge variance is rates when checking online so would be good to go with a proven supplier.

We booked via an independant holiday outlet which in turn used Eaglerider and was actually cheaper than going direct. This was a motorcycle trip and there were 7 couples from Australia who all had a good time. It should be cheaper doing it yourself though.

Hi
Me and my partner are going to be doing Route 66 (with virgin holidays) in august this year 16 day trip. We are just wondering how much money people took with them for 16 days for petrol and spending money throughout the trip. We are just trying to get a rough idea. Obviously I know it’s subjective and it’s down to what you want to do throughout the trip ie activities etc.
Any help would be appreciated

Hi Sophie
We did this trip with virgin 2 years ago and are going again this year (but with a tailor made trip). We took £2000 but came back with £500.
We went with friends so shared the cost of petrol and the one way fee. As Virgin use Alamo the one way fee will be $500 and the petrol was $500 total (depending on the route you take )So are you using mainly interstate roads or actually driving the Route 66 roads where they exist? Also are you doing any side trips, for instance in Albuquerque we went to Santa Fe on the train, (the hotel take you and pick you up from the station) but we also drove to Sandia peak one evening for the sunset.
Then it depends where you eat etc and what you want to buy as pressies/mementos.
If I can help further plz ask.
