‪Thanks to the reviews here, I understand that this hell-hole of a night-time bar is about to close. The one redeeming feature of the place: courteous door staff. And that’s where the fun ends.
Anyone who wasn’t unlucky enough to live through the threadbare bits of the 1970s, and who likes the immersive museum experience, should catch this place before it goes forever.
With only the beer lights to guide us we stepped up to the bar. It took several moments to get there as every step involved a kind of slow-motion peeling off as the floor tried to reclaim the soles of my shoes. You only get that experience with years of neglectful cleaning - the kind where soap and water are never used; instead the proprietors insist on those spray bottles of antiseptic cleanser for tables and floors, each layer trapping the history of the previous night, a conundrum for future archaeologists.
All the props were present in this macabre theatre of despair: distracted barman; gang of four inexperienced drinkers, play-fighting at the bar over who would get the right to buy the round, thus claiming Beta Male status in front of the gaggle of pretty girls opposite; the girls, looking-but-not-looking at the overexcited lads, while comparing spray-tans and nail treatments.
It was the pre-punk Seventies all over again. A superannuated dee-jay announcing to the ten or twelve forlorn souls that the evening was being live-streamed to some social media / radio / blog / local website. God alone knows why. If this broadcast was about to bring the entertainment-hungry, sticky-floor enthusiasts of Whitley Bay, Seaton Sluice and North Shields piling in, we had better be quick with our order.
Six minutes passed as the lads were served liquids of orange and blue. I was next in the queue and leaned in for service, as the callow youth behind the bar turned away to attend to something vital under a distant draining board or countertop. It was hard to tell in the lowering gloom. Maybe pipework, perhaps a rat or mouse. He returned and immediately spun round to serve a girl who arrived after us; admittedly prettier and in more urgent need of anaesthetic to dull her senses in this place previously uncharted by Dante.
Served, he turned away from me to acknowledge the lank-haired dee-jay who by this time was chatting to any of the impeccably-turned-out girls willing to listen, as some incongruous R&B (not the Seventies kind) blared out from the speakers and the decks console by the far wall, which appeared to be glistening through the murk.
After ten minutes, the bar boy found something else to catch his eye, missing my wave yet again.
At this point, my long-suffering wife, who had found the least-dirty place to sit, had peeled herself from the seat and waded across the floor to see what the delay was.
After nearly fifteen minutes of waiting, we decided to leave. Sadly we weren’t able to check out the delights of the toilets, but other reviewers have confirmed that their filthiness was fully in keeping with the non-lavatorial areas of this godforsaken bar; though it sounds hard to tell which is which.
We left, thanking the doorman as we exited, and me, for the first time in my life, commiserating with him about the worst bar I had been in for several years. He smiled; I turned and seconds later, exiting the poorly-lit lobby, managed to miss the step and stumble-fell to my knees, bruising my side on an outdoor bench as I hit the rain-washed paving stones. At least they were clean. If I’d fallen inside I would still be there now stuck forever like a Jurassic coast dinosaur.
It was instant karma. I am still sore...
Places like this deserve to fail and close. The management should be struck off as ‘unfit’ and not be allowed to reopen them under a new name. Probably not allowed to trade again without retraining. After all the effort of the local redevelopment (nearby, the restored Spanish City, and the Links areas are a delight), places like this just let the side down.‬

‪We popped in here for a quick drink prior to going for a meal at a restaurant around the corner. It was around 7ish and it was a lovely evening so decided to sit outside. Prices were great. A small bottle of prosecco in a clean glass and a pint for under £10. My partner visited the toilets and advised me to await the restaurant as they were disgustingly dirty!
The bar area itself was empty and the décor was a little dated but it served our needs.
After we ate at the restaurant we decided to await our taxi from 42nd street again. This time we got a pint of beer and a glass of chardonnay which I wasn’t impressed with. However it was my choice. We chose to sit inside as it was a little later and the sun had fallen. It was only then did we realise why this place was in decline. Apparently it was closing at the end of the month. This does not excuse the state of the toilets though. No excuse for dirt and downfall of cleanliness. It’s a bit of a shame as it’s so close to the restaurants on the main road but maybe there are plans to renovate or to even open another bar as the view of the open sea is just lovely.‬

‪We have started coming when my parents visit and stay in Whitley Bay. Easy walk from the metro so we don’t have to faff with parking. Dog friendly so we bring our pooch and he’s always spoilt with treats and a full water bowl. Food is great - home cooked. Lots of options for vegetarians. The beer selection is superb. Cannot complain at all. Great service. ‬

‪Second visit to the King George, food is very good, however the place needs a clean my hand stuck to the door going to the ladies and flies in the bar area. Disappointing as it's a quirky little place.‬

‪42nd Street is okay and overlooks the sea, (and has a quiz on Sunday nights) but I preferred the side bar called King George's (on North Parade). Its quite snug but really friendly (including dogs). It's where the Whitley Bay locals drink but they are chatty and inclusive. The staff work across both bars and are very welcoming. The menu isn't extensive but the food is nice (I recommend the nachos), reasonably priced and portion size is good. Sunday lunch is fab.‬
