We visited in August which was probably a mistake as it was so busy. We did manage to walk amongst monkeys but due to it being so busy they did seem to hide away.
They appear to be looked after well. Lots of information boards and places to eat.

Had a nice afternoon in the Apenheul. Staff are friendly and pay close attention to the monkeys and tourists in the loose areas of the monkeys. Between the loose areas there are plenty of places where you can eat/drink. At the entrance you can borrow a bag from the Apenheul where you can put your own stuff, so the monkeys can not grab food. Besides the monkeys there are also other nice animals!
It is also fun for the young children. Plenty of play areas, games and tests you can do. Furthermore, plenty of changing rooms for the little ones.
Good to know is that an hour before closing time the first free range areas of the monkeys close. Because of this you cannot do another round in the park.

Terrible experience!
I recently visited Apenheul Park with my wife and our four-year-old son, and what should have been a delightful family day out turned into a distressing experience. While walking through the park, my son was enjoying his ice cream when, out of nowhere, a staff member approached us in a very rude and aggressive manner. She told my son that he couldn't have his ice cream there and that we needed to go back. We were unaware of any such rule and would have gladly complied if we had been politely informed.
When I asked where we could dispose of the ice cream, I was curtly told to go back, again in a very unpleasant tone. As we were trying to follow their instructions, another staff member aggressively followed us, further scaring my son, who started crying uncontrollably. Despite my polite requests to be left alone, he continued to follow us, adding to my son's distress.
We tried to move past this upsetting situation and headed to the restaurant area to finish the ice cream. However, as we attempted to leave the park using the same route, the same female staff member confronted us again, this time accusing me of being moody and insisting that I needed to speak more politely to her colleague. This was unnecessary and unprofessional, especially as my son was once again traumatized by the interaction.
What was meant to be a joyful family outing turned into an emotionally damaging experience for my son. I am extremely disappointed with the behavior of the park staff, who seemed to lack basic courtesy and empathy, especially when dealing with young children.
I do not recommend Apenheul Park to families with young children. The staff's aggressive and unkind behavior completely ruined our day and left my son emotionally scarred.

The Apenheul is a beautiful location. And how nice that in theory it is a smoke-free place.
In theory, it is because people do not care and it is not monitored at all and certainly not enforced.
This would be my advice to improve, as this made my stay less enjoyable.

Nice park but not worth it. Few animals. The gorilla meal in Dutch. I mean, it's not worth getting this far.

I want to respond to comments below.
If you go in half an hour before closing time and then run somewhere hoping to find some kind of monkey feast, you shouldn't blame the Apenheul. They are animals, show themselves when they feel like it and towards the evening animals in zoos often move towards the pens. So particularly stupid and shortsighted and especially sour to give such a revier.
Scroll through the pictures. If you put a little effort into it, you really see dozens of monkeys and half-monkeys. Because it is a beautiful spacious park with a lot of attention to animal welfare, the animals have the chance to move around the enclosures and with you sometimes, yes, make some effort and search for the animals. And just when you find them, you see them exhibiting relaxed behavior.
Folks, it's not a circus, is it? They are not trained animals and it is not an urban zoo in which animals are pent up in far too small enclosures tight with stress full of sight behind bars and glass.
Oh, bad reviews with 'busy', don't go full in high season on a nice weather day, then you also understand that it is busy. How can you judge a park by that, where do you get the nerve?
We have had 3 season tickets when the children were small, have enjoyed every time without exception. Recommended for anyone with any reasonable sense and understanding of the world around them.

You get very close to the monkeys. It's a shame you can't touch them, but of course they're not cuddly toys. The best time to come is in spring, when the green is not yet so dense. The monkeys have a lot of space and can deal with many objects and also with each other. The park is also the right size, not too big and not too small. I was thrilled, especially because the admission cost me only €17.50 instead of €27.50. I got the offer through Amusement Parkdeals.de. At Google: Coupon Apenheul, then you can find the page very quickly. The page to order is in Dutch, but Google can translate it. The ticket is only available once you have booked an appointment. So I bought the ticket and only when I was sure when I was going, then booked the appointment and then got the ticket.

Very nice and well maintained park. The alternation between monkeys, info boards and DIY items keeps the park fascinating all the time. The info boards are sufficiently short and interesting and engaging. We did not find all the monkey species but were able to spot most of them. A very nice trip for young and old!

Hi all – just wondering if anyone can advise how close the monkeys get to you? Specifically, do they tend to try to climb/jump on on you etc? My kids love looking at animals but I think this would be a bit too much for them. Thanks so much for any advice.

Are the monkeys roaming free everywhere or are there some places where you can see animals through enclosures without the free monkeys? My mom is very afraid of animals but she is OK when she can look at them through a fence. Just wondering if she will be able to join us or not. Thanks!

Depends on what you're looking for. If you want healthy food you’ll have a hard time finding it. Their menu has salad and home made soup, but when we were there they were out of both. So only unhealthy choices were left. Unhealthy but tasteful. But I hope you’re going for the animals and not the food 😊

hello!
it is possible to visit Apenheul with a wheelchair. there are some pathway (more for the children) that aren't accessible for a wheelchair. there is a so called apenboompad, were you walk up in the trees to meet the monkeys on there one level, with isn't accessible for wheelchair.
this parc is a visit worthy. I'll hope you still go!

You can easily spend a good 4 to 5 hours there if you take your time and spend some more time at the area where the monkeys walk around freely and see the shows. Enjoy your stay!
