You can que at anytime during the day but the ques get very long the later the day. Arrive at 08.30 and there will be no que and it is nice and quiet

Entering St Peter Basilica is free (in fact Vatican City is free to admit) though you need to purchase a ticket to enter the chapel/dome and you can get the tickets there on the spot.

Recommend we follow the dress code for the religious sentiments and to avoid a situation where entry is refused.

To enter the basilica you have to Que up to the right of the main building. The security check is just prior to gaining entrance at the front

Once in the basilica you go to queue for the lift (or walk the stairs!). Once you get out of the lift there are signs for tge cupola, it's one way up and one way down I.e you do up one side, come out onto the viewing area then go back down the other side. I recommend getting this part done before it gets busy then you can explore the basilica, which is massive and amazing.
