The Würzburg Residence, along with the cathedrals in Aachen and Speyer and the churches in Wiese, became the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany. What explains such a high assessment of this palace? UNESCO itself explained this by the fact that, along with Versailles and Schoenbrunn, it is an outstanding, the best of the best Baroque palaces in Europe. And hence the world... Interestingly, the initiator of the construction, Archbishop Johann Philipp Franz von Schoenborn, began construction in 1719 with money won in a lawsuit. Let's thank the court of that time for such a successful solution of the dispute for humanity. The customer died four years later without even seeing the walls of the palace. The construction completed in 1744 was financed by his brother. However, this architectural masterpiece was created by the famous architect Johann Balthazar Neumann. The residence is huge, it has about 400 rooms and halls, of which only 42 - 10% are open to tourists. A significant part of the palace was damaged during the American bombing on March 16, 1945, when part of the palace was destroyed, although the most important halls - the Imperial and White and the grand staircase were preserved. The merit of saving the residence belongs to the American art critic John Skilton, who took measures to preserve the preserved halls immediately after the occupation of Würzburg by American troops. The restoration of the residence took much longer than the construction and ended 61 years after the destruction in 2006. The main wow effect in the residence is produced by the grand staircase, a sample of the Venetian Rococo-Baroque style with trompe-l'oeil techniques. The ceiling of the Grand Staircase was painted by the Venetian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo with his sons Gian-Domenico and Lorenzo in 1750-1753. The largest mural in the world allegorically depicts four parts of the World - Europe, Asia, Africa, America (Australia was discovered, but not identified as a continent). An indelible impression is made by the Imperial Hall with paintings by the same Tiepolo. Unfortunately, all that splendor is forbidden to photograph. It is unclear for what reasons. I remember the inscription in the films about the Second World War: "Verboten!"

It's crazy that this place doesn't get more visitation, because it's a remarkable palace. Made all the more remarkable by the fact that there are so few other tourists. No lines, no reservations, no jostling crowds. Seriously, we liked it better than Versailles.
The only thing is that the gardens aren't particularly extensive, and it is all restored. Painstakingly so, after it as bombed to pieces during WWII. OTOH, because of that, it doesn't feel like it's showing its age like Versailles does.
Also, don't miss the chapel. Very ornate!

The Residenz is one of the most important castles in Europe. It was built from 1720-1744, and it’s a principal work of South German Baroque era architecture. We walked there from the downtown after a tiring day and we had no time to go inside. But the huge square, the imposing twin-buildings, the garden and the church was really stunning. We shoud return and visit the entire palace in detailed.

Der Eintritt kostet 9 Euro und ist angemessen. Taschen sind unten in Schließfächern abzugeben.
Die Residenz ist riesig und lohnt einen Besuch. Sie zeigt den Reichtunm der Fürstbischofe.
Die Erklärungen sind gut und verständlich. Gut auch der Raum, der die zerstörte Residenz und den Wiederaufbau zeigt.
Der Garten kann kostenlos besucht werden und lohnt sich in jedem Fall auch.
Die Residenz ist riesig und lohnt einen Besuch. Sie zeigt den Reichtunm der Fürstbischofe.

This is still the #1 attraction in Wuerzburg, as it's a UNESCO World Heritage site. Things have improved for the betterment of visitors, as the previous prohibition on photography has been removed. I was there in 2013 and was told that photography was forbidden, but people are now able to take pictures to their heart's content. My daughter was astounded and her jaw nearly hit the floor viewing the pink marble of the main hall with the Tiepolo fresco ceiling. I never get tired of visiting this gorgeous palace. My first visit was in Spring of 1964, and much of the building was closed off for reconstruction and restoration. This is one of my favorite destinations for a visit to Germany. This got 4 thumbs up recommendation bu my daughter and myself.

Wow, just beautiful! We were traveling through and only had time to quickly tour here but it was well worth it. Much more opulent and spectacular than even the famous Ludwig castles!

Die Residenz ist wunderschön, aber das Verhalten des Personals gegenüber Italienern ist wirklich inakzeptabel. Als sie hörten, dass wir Italienisch sprachen, zwangen sie uns sofort, unseren Rucksack und unsere persönliche Damenhandtasche in den Schließfächern zu lassen. Obwohl ich darauf hinwies, dass ich persönliche Dinge in meiner Handtasche hatte und diese mitbringen musste (ich bin behindert), erlaubten sie mir immer noch nicht, meine Handtasche während des Besuchs mitzubringen. Als wir uns umsahen, stellten wir schnell fest, dass wir von vielen anderen Menschen anderer Nationalitäten umgeben waren, die stattdessen die Tasche bei sich hatten. Wir fragten den Reiseleiter nach Erklärungen und man sagte uns, dass sie nicht böse auf uns seien und dass die Zimmer klein seien und alle unterwegs keine Handtasche hätten. Das stimmte offensichtlich nicht, alle Frauen hatten die Tasche bei sich. Ich fühlte mich beschämt und als Opfer eines eindeutig rassistischen Verhaltens, das ich im Jahr 2023 für absolut INAKZEPTABEL halte. Schäm dich.

The Residenz Wurzburg is a huge palace built in the 1700's. There are lots of rooms with artifacts and furniture on display. The highlight of the palace is the huge fresco covering the ceiling over the ornate stairway.

Got in early before the crowds. took time to enjoy each room. My favorite was the mirrors. The garden is also beautiful. Highly recommended stop

You can cerainly purchase a book about the property, but there are no free pamphlets available to guide you thru the Residenz. If the guides/times for English won’t work with your schedule, I would strongly suggest looking at a private group tour or even private 1-on-1 guide to take you thru the property. There is an emence amount of hustory here and you want and expert to help boil down that information. Otherwise, you’ll driwn from information overload.

Buona sera, alcune stanze fra cui la Cappella sono visitabili solo con guida di lingua Tedesca . 2 volte il giorno c'è la guida di lingua inglese.

Hola Miriam dentro del palacio encontrarás panfletos con la información del Residenz en Español, y el día que nosotros fuimos me pareció que había un grupo de turistas que iban en un tour en castellano, te recomendaría buscar en viatur o en el sitio de turismo de Alemania.

Are you thinking of the one in the centre of the market square next to the red and white church? If so it was built in 1805 a few years after Napoleon's excursions in Egypt. Egyptian art became very popular throughout the west at this time and Napoleon himself visited Wurzberg on three occasions and stayed in the Residenz. It's the meeting point for people in the centre of Wurzberg.

What are the guided tour times in English during November - March? the website only states time during the main season.

The November-March hours are 10 am-5 pm for the Residence. The last entry is at 4 pm. They are open daily. They do not have guided tours. They have a free audio guide tour. The audio guide tours are available in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Russian.
