Long ago in the 1970s, I was backpacking around Europe. I hitchhiked all over England but never went to or saw Stonehenge, even though back then it was free and one could just walk up to it.
Fast forward to Friday, May 26, 2023. My wife and I had a rental car. We drove to Larkhill, parked the car on the side of the road and walked the public trail to Stonehenge. The trail is clearly marked in some places, other areas it is not. We embarked on the trail about 6:30 PM. It was a warm sunny day. First portion is a gravel road and it leads eventually to Stonehenge. However, about halfway there, we encountered a bearded hippie-like guy walking his dog. He asked us where we were going. I said, "well not Woodstock to join in a rock 'n roll band". (LOL). We are going to Stonehenge that should be obvious. He said, "you already passed the gate". Indeed, we backtracked about 1000 feet, to where there was a gate in the fence. The fence was to contain the cows in that pasture. -The opposite side of the road was also fenced for sheep in that pasture. - Heeding that guy's advice we continued on up a slight rise and through the verdant pasture dotted all over with yellow flowers. Stonehenge soon came into view up ahead at the top of the hill in the distance. We also encountered the cows that were very docile, they moved off the path for us. The path is discernable, but not well worn at all. My guess is judging time we spent walking it could be close to a 2 mile hike overall. On this trail you approach a wire fence preventing you from getting closer. There is a gravel path on the other side, with another fence beyond that. Still we were quite close, but only able to view it from the north side. It was a wonderful experience and easy hike. While we were there, people were walking within the stones with security guards around keeping watch. We think it is ridiculous to pay large sums of money just to view this. See it for free if you are able to walk.

A lot of people seem to be confusing the somewhat expensive tourist trap of the Stonehenge site with this free to use footpath.
Stonehenge has its own trip advisor page separate from this one for the nearby footpath.
It's a nice footpath, with plenty of sheep, chalk downs, and at one point a fairly close view of Stonehenge. Great for a wander, and if you walk over from Amesbury or woodhenge, you'll inevitably walk the path of The Avenue, which is now known to be the original path to the Stonehenge from the river Avon. In a time back when fun was allowed on site, and the solstices were a time of celebration. This was of course before English Heritage took over management and took a firm stance against fun and enjoyment of the site and started using it as a cash cow to milk the unwary.

I recommend it however you don’t need to pay for the whole ticket. You don’t get as close however you still can see the stones pretty well!

Cheap way to see the Stones. The footpath is ‘the other side of the fence’ to the visitor’s path. You cant avail yourself of the visitor facilities but if you don't mind looking past people and don’t want to see the stones from all sides then this could be your answer. If you are a paying visitor, you can extend your visit by walking along the public footpath too.

Well marked with the grassed area well maintained. Plastic walkway was not helpful for me, it was probably laid so you could more easily avoid any mud.

After reading another review here- we decided to stop and revisit Stonehenge- this time for free on our way to a Somerset holiday (been here several years back as paying customer)
We had parked on Willoughby Rd & Fargo Rd at Larkhill and took the 30 minutes pleasant walk to Stonehenge. We still got very close and took some lovely pictures!

What most people are describing here is a short length of public footpath very close to Stonehenge from which you get a good view of the stone circle without paying the entrance fee. The problem is that there is no legal car parking close to the stones.
There are however several footpaths which converge at Stonehenge. You could start at the Visitor Centre (just over 1 mile away, GR 098428), or from Woodhenge (about 2.5 miles away, GR 149434 ), or from Strangways, Larkhill (about 1.5 miles, GR 137434). The last option is the one I described. All are lovely walks and will give you a feeling for the place that you never get using the official on-site transport. Best see OS Leisure Map 130.
