One of our many sightseeing stops, loved all the information nearby about this area. The log chute was amazing just thinking about how they used it before. It's falling apart again but still neat to see. Road up to the chute was so pretty, nice drive. There was a trail nearby we only walk for a bit but so many big rocks and moss for your photo shoot.

Parking is before your get to the chute. (Sign re what parking is acceptable needs to be reworded). We walk through the trail to get to the Log Chute which provided some excellent views down river plus the chute itself. Informative set of boards lets you learn the history and reasoning behind the log chute. No cost. Recommend walking across the dam and trying the trail on the other side.

If in the area this is a very interesting stop showing the old chutes so essential for the logging industry, easy access with trails and lookouts. Posted information helpful. Free, parking, portable toilets present.

While in the area we stopped by to explore and were delighted at what was available. The chute was impressive and a valuable historical artifact. There was adequate parking, clean pit toilets and a small marina close by. Our time did not permit us to explore the marked hiking trail that started there but that would invite a second visit.

Nice drive through the back roads to arrive from Minden. Small parking lot then a short walk up the road to reach the dam on Hawk Lake.
The log chute is wooden and the only one of its kind left in Ontario. It was used by loggers to help transport logs between lakes. There is a smaller replica at the Logger’s Museum trail in Algonquin Park.
On the upper side of the dam, Hawk Lake is serene. Below, the water drops into the chute and blasts towards the river. The area has an information kiosk, a lovely picnic ground, a lookout over the river and hiking paths along the river and through the woods all of which present great photo ops

If you like country drives and small hikes, this is for you! The road to get there is picturesque, especially in the fall. Plan enough time to stop at the nearby stone Anglican church, the Stanhope museum and the Stanhope airport. The log chute is a wonderful piece of history, shooting logs from Algonquin park to the mills north of Lake Ontario- logs could take two years to make the trip! Adjacent to the site, you will see a map outlining the many hiking trails that are part of the Headwaters of the Trent-Severn Waterway. Many are short but well marked. I recommend visiting as a great family outing. (Drive past to the end of the road to the quaint Hawk Lake marina and store- treat yourself to an ice cream or butter tart!)

It is quite a drive from Haliburton but the way the GPS took us was quite scenic. The signs leading to it are small and easy to miss and from the road is kind of easy to miss and end up at the marina. All the information boards are in nice shape and quite informative. There's a small picnic area and washrooms.
The chute is very cool, unfortunately a large bolder has fallen and damaged the chute on the far side so the water spills out and does not complete the chute. There's a donation box for maintenance and hopefully soon they can repair it. There's two trails for hiking as well.

I travelled here while visiting the area and was surprised by how enjoyable it was to see a log chute. It is located in a lovely area but rather far out with not a lot else to do in the area.

Needs some $ spent to repair this great attraction, part of the chute has broken away and water spills over the sides.

Hi there, hope someone can help. Is there a phone number you had for this place, I can't find one. Are there signs when you get closer to the lake?
كُتب بتاريخ 31 يوليو 2018
Hello,
We will be staying at a cottage on Big hHawk Lake and we were wondering if it is possible to arrive to this attraction by boat? Would there be a place to dock it while we visit?
كُتب بتاريخ 30 يوليو 2017
I honestly don't know about docking. the lake comes right up to the chute dam but I don't know what is on the lake side to dock at. Sorry.

Hi, is this a ride? I looked at the pictures and there is nothing in any of the pictures of the chute.
If it is a ride, can a 7 year old handle it? She's up for anything that kid.
كُتب بتاريخ 3 مايو 2016
No, it's definitely not a ride. It's a historical site that wouldn't be of interest to smaller kids but, as the reviews say, it's a great piece of Canadian history that's well worth the drive. But then, I'm biased, since I was the project manager of the 6-year rehabilitation project!

Hi,
Is it ok for children 5+ to go? How safe did it look like?
Where abouts did you enter the river to fish? Is it allow the tubing down the river?
Thank you
كُتب بتاريخ 28 يوليو 2015
A few hundred yards downstream of The Chute, there is a place where you can pull your car off to the right, safely. This is where you can inflate you inner tubes and launch your party on the river.
The river is quite gentle, and shallow.... perfect for young children as long as they are accompanied by adults.
There are one or two places that the river narrows, and the current speeds up, and you need to actively paddle your inner tube to keep it in the center of the river.
If you have a 5-year old child, he/she would need to be on an inner tube with an adult.
It's about a 45-minute trip along the river until you reach the first road crossing bridge.
Just before the bridge, is where you should exit out of the water, by the bank on the east side.
As far as fishing goes, there are some minnows that merganser ducks feed on but, other than that, it doesn't appear to be a favourable river for fishing.
Hope this is of help.
God Bless.
