De natuur die het gewoon weer overneemt alsof er nooit een walvis gedood is daar. Een plek die je niet kunt overslaan. Allereerst om je het ridicule van de mens te realiseren. Luister en zie hoeveel walvissen daar het leven lieten. Zie ook direct het herstel als de mens zich terugtrekt. Een magische plek met een bizarre historie.

Brilliant insight into the lives and activities of the whaling and sealing industry. The buildings and machinery have been left in situ and untouched since Grytviken was abandoned in 1966 due to whale and seal stocks being totally decimated. Now days, seals and penguins have recolonised the entire area, including most of Grytviken.
Well worth visiting if you're 'passing', and do visit the cemetery where you can see Sir Ernest Shackleton's grave. The most southernly Post Office in the world is in Grytviken, which is where you can buy a post card and stamp to send home. You will definitely arrive back home before the card!
Great place to visit for an hour or two.

It's strange to realize that on a good day in the past, up to 30 whales were processed into oil, tear and other products here. Many of the old cooking pots and some factory buildings are still standing. You walk around peacefully and there are plenty of placards where information is given.
Also strange is that there is a post office and museum (both interesting to pop in), but that outside some English officials and researchers, it is mainly occupied by fur seals and king penguins. They have now appropriated the old devices and the many grass meadows. And rightly so: they are there almost all year round.

Highly interesting place with interesting sights, great scenery and history.

This is interesting to walk around to see, but it is also sad that they have left so much behind to just rust and rot on this beautiful island. It is a sign of times gone by from the days of whaling in the area years ago. You can see the seals, penguins and elephant seals all around the decaying ships . That is the best part.

Me and my friends from Qarsherskiy came down and had a great time. We saw penguins and seals and orcas top.

Our first stop in S. Georgia! There is a museum - small but worth a visit; post office; gift shop (the yarn products are nice! - credit cards (except not Amex) accepted but cash is always good), and a restroom. There is a docent who will give you a tour of the grounds and the history of the whaling station. Be sure to wear clean muck boots - you will be dodging MANY seals. Also helps to have a walking stick to shoo the more curious (aggressive) ones away. Shackleton's grave is a short walk from the landing area.

To see the remains of the whaling industry, completely rusted and decaying, against the beauty of the place (with all of the animals surrounding it) is really haunting. It's wonderful to see everything decaying (and gives us hope for the environment's future), but it is interesting to see how these hearty souls lived. While beautiful, the environment is rough and isolated...even in the summer. So understanding how these people lived is fun to learn.
Definitely a must see place...if for no other reason than to learn from our mistakes of the past!

In the end this whole place was built to industrially kill whales. While one might be impressed by the way that was done and there are lots of explanations to help you, this was mass slaughter. So see this as a monument of myopic thinking.
